Didn't say it was a cupcake. I said it wasn't a road game, and that Duke won't play a single road game until the second week of January 2019. Was some part of that statement incorrect?

You implied it; otherwise your post replying to mine doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
You are right though- playing Kentucky at a neutral site is a tough scheduling decision, so we should give K some credit even if he is unwilling to hit the road until the ACC makes him do so.
Now if there were a coach that was willing to play early on-campus road games against tough mid-majors, and schedule non-conference home-and-home series with high major programs and Final Four contenders like Gonzaga, Texas and Stanford, and still play those neutral site non-conference games against powerhouse programs like Kentucky?
Well I think we can all agree that such a coach would be a truly bold, courageous man who goes above and beyond for the good of the sport. A legend not just because of his extraordinary success but also because of his willingness to take on all comers and to grow the game across the country. A God among men, really.

Not sure what team you're referring to but here's the non-conference true road games Michigan State has played over the last decade against quality opponents. This doesn't include the 3-4 neutral court games per year against the elite teams.
Duke x2, North Carolina, Louisville, Gonzaga, Texas x2, Florida, Notre Dame

It will be interesting to see Nevada over the next several games. They are only like 10-1 to win the championship. They play loyola, az st., USC, Utah and Tulsa coming up. Nobody really good, but at least names. If they are for real they should make easy work of those teams.
Oregon is an interesting team but I find Pritchard to just be an awful player. 5 turnovers, 3 assists? If they are going anywhere he needs to take a significant leap forward or be replaced by somebody that steps up. Regardless I think they should be fun to watch.
Purdue should be another fun team to watch. Guard heavy lineup led by Edwards who should be a stud this year. Will be fun to watch how they handle size, since it kind of seems like they dont really have it, which maybe I am skewed by recent years, but I always picture Purdue being loaded with trees.
Marquette could be a very tough out if they can actually play some defense. That game was painful for a while. The score was stuck at 44-30 for 7 minutes. Looks bad at first glance, but no way could Marquette hold a team to a stretch like that last year. Any team.

I was describing my favorite team, UNC. Heels' non-conference schedule this year opens with two road games against mid-majors (one of whom beat them last season), includes a road game at Michigan, a home game against Gonzaga as part of a home-and-home series, and neutral site games against Texas and Kentucky. It's absolutely brutal. I know Michigan State also has a good reputation for tough non-conference scheduling.
Mostly I was just lightly smack-talking our hated rival though, since Coach K hates non-conference road games almost as much as he hates Duke recruits who don't immediately play like NBA lottery picks. All in good fun.

It would be really impressive if it hadnt already been agreed to before losing to them last year and if it wasn't because of Roy Williams being good friends with the Wofford coach.
But it does at least deserve some mention as most teams just dont do it.

I am. I really liked when Indiana went to Fort Wayne also. I love those types of games and wish we could see more of them. Especially with mid-majors who are set to be really, really good like Wofford this year and Fort Wayne last year (or was it 2 years ago)?
We need more of this.
I was shocked the spread was only UNC -10.
I personally don't think it matters for teams that are essentially a lock for the tournament. There should be credit to bubble teams that schedule difficult NC road games (either close losses or wins).
Speaking of Fort Wayne, how many damn times are they going to change their name?

Well yeah, obviously there are bigger challenges on the schedule of every elite program, including UNC. The Heels were still a 10 point favorite last night. But Wofford beat UNC in Chapel Hill last year. Last night was billed as the biggest game in the history of the campus. Students camped out for two days for tickets. The crowd was insane, and the game was close until the final TV timeout. In short it was a real college basketball game with screaming kids and high stakes and dudes who think they're the next Steph Curry raining off-balance threes and all the usual stuff you don't see when two blue bloods play a low-stakes game at a neutral site. It was tense and fun to watch.
There's a reason nobody else schedules games like this (early road games at mid-majors that rank in the top half of Div 1). The upside is limited and there's a real risk of immediately putting your team in a hole in terms of the polls and eventually postseason seeding that doesn't happen if you lose to Michigan State or Duke. It makes sense. But IMO it was still cool of Williams to do it. And I'm still gonna bust Duke's chops for not playing a road game until mid-January, because Duke.

So is Kentucky seriously over ranked and not that good or is Duke just that dominant? And I think I'd tune in to watch Zion play no matter who he plays for or what the opponent. He's so much fun to watch, and its just hard to believe someone that big can move so quickly. Can you imagine trying to take a charge on him???
Kentucky opened at -1, closed at -2.5. Quite possible it was just a fluky game being such a big blowout.

I couldn't make it GW's opener last night. They ended up starting with a 22-0 lead, but then blew it and lost in OT (missing around 20 free throw shots). If I knew nothing else but the score, I'd be bummed that I missed a game that went to OT, but I'm glad that I managed to avoid suffering through that one.

It became apparent in the first two exhibition games that UK had no clue on defense. Duke came out and punched them in the mouth, and they went into shock. That's the hardest part to swallow - after the Bahamas trip this team looked like they were ready, but they had no answer for those three studs at Duke.ffmail4me said:

Buffalo erases a 13-point lead inside the last 8-10 minutes and shocks the Mountaineers in Morgantown, 99-94 in OT.
Frankly, the Bulls didn't even play well. All-MAC first teamers Nick Perkins and Jeremy Harris were virtually invisible. Senior CJ Massinburg drops 43, including 9/15 from 3, for the upset.

And here we go. My Gamecocks lost at home to Stony Brook. Gonna be a long season. They should have doubled any offer to Zion. That Final Four run now seems like a lifetime ago.
Their first two games were against terrible opponents and it's early, but previous Pitt teams don't win by 39 when favored by 14 or so like they did last night. And it wasn't even that close. They'll end up trying to play .500 ball for the season, but the future already looks bright with Jeff Capel.

I don't know what Pershing HS is, but he used to be the coach from Romulus High School in Detroit. Apparently he was really successful and took them deep in the state tournaments a handful of times. Bobby Hurley was an assistant at Rhode Island and was scouting E.C. Matthews who was a Romulus player and ended up playing at Rhode Island. The story is that Hurley was really impressed with Nate Oats both on the court and off. Hurley got the head coaching job at UB a few months later, and offered Oats one of the assistant positions.
Hurley left for Arizona State after 2 years, and they promoted Oats to head coach. He's proven to be a tremendous recruiter, and I'm surprised he hasn't had any bigtime offers yet. There were rumors that Pitt was sniffing around him in the offseason, but nothing came of it. UB gave him a nice extension before last season. As good of a coach and recruiter as Hurley is, I kinda think Oats is better.

I know that I'm probably the lone one in here that cares about GW basketball, but Deadspin with some great reporting here on what happened that forced Mike Lonergan out right after winning the NIT championship.
I remember getting some pushback in here from the 1-2 people who probably care in here when I defended Lonergan and blamed the AD. Story seems to confirm everything that I've thought about what happened (Longeran complained about some of the AD's activities, AD retaliated by leaking stuff to WaPo that made Lonergan sound worse than he was).
Pretty sad to see what has happened to the program since -- as we begin the year with home losses to Stony Brook and Siena (road loss to UVA more forgivable), and with no young recruiting talent in sight.

He’s pretty frustrating, as evidenced by these past two nights in NYC. Against Iowa he’s 1-9 and just invisible, but tonight against Syracuse he puts up 18-5-4 on 4-5 from the field, and his handles allow him to single handedly break any press. Dude started as a frosh for a final four team, but he can still just disappear. I do really like what I’ve seen from freshman PG Will Richardson, he has shown the ability to get in to the lane and make plays.
Altman’s Oregon teams always take awhile to come together, and this year will be a big test of that. Bol is just such a unique talent that it’s hard to project what his impact will be in his likely one year in the program. But with he and Kenny Wooten, the team may lead the nation in blocks. Highest ranked recruit Louis King is still a week or two from playing, and the offense really needs a playmaker like he is supposed to be. And they have a few other young dudes that have shown flashes but little consistency.
No clue yet if this is a P-12 championship level team that could compete for a top 2 seed in the tourney or a squad that just doesn’t figure it out and becomes an easy out in the first weekend.

Agree on Richardson. I really like his ability to penetrate and dish or finish. He may end up being the jewel of the class. If King is as advertised that will give them the scorer the team needs.
Looks like a fun team to watch!
