Need Advice - Do I call BS on the commish? (1 Viewer)

I noticed something tonight that I wish I hadn't. The commissioner in my league made what I would be an illegal lineup change today. It was for his son's team. Originally, Cam Newton was the starting QB for his son's team. However, at 4:23 today, the log shows that the commissioner benched Cam Newton and started Matt Ryan in his place. I should mention that the game in question was not against me.

I only started keeping tabs on them because the commisioner and his son made a questionable trade last week. Cam Newton was on a bye, so the commissioner traded Matt Ryan to his son in exchange for Tampa Mike Williams. The commissioner hasnt started Mike Williams yet. I believe it was simply done to help his son win the game. Seems like this weeks actions would support that.

This is a money league. What is the right course of action for me?

If the log shows that it was done at 4:23, then point that out to the commish in a private email and ask him what the deal is. If he tries to duck it or something, then call him out on the league message board (assuming there is one).

And I'd never play in a league that that guy is a commissioner of ever again.

Step one is to begin looking for a new league for 2012

If you paid money for this league, you ought to ask for it back

Your call if you want to dime him out to the rest of the league

I am not a big proponet of having one on one talks with cheaters in hopes that they will change their ways

I would politely give the guy playing the commish's son a headsup and then let him be the guy to question the commish.

This was one of my first thoughts.

Oh come on, if he switched a player playing for one on his bench after either game started, it's obviously cheating and you should leave the league

Blatant cheating, but...

How much money is involved? Does it really matter?

Is the son's team in contention? I mean, if his record is 1-8 so far I'd just say to myself "that's just sad that you're cheating like that, but it won't change anything". Then I probably wouldn't be back next year.

I would say it depends... I know my league has a rule where if the owner cannot be by a computer in time to change the lineup, the owner can leave a voicemail on my cell phone with the player change. I make the move for them (even after the game started) as long as I have a phone call before the kickoff of the game.

Definitely have to ask the question, but there could be a reason it was done after the fact. My 2 cents...

Screw emailing the commissioner. Email the rest of your league first.

Most commissioners get defensive when called out on their cheating...ban you from league, etc...

4 pm: "DAD I TOLD YOU AT BREAKFAST THIS MORNING TO SUB IN RYAN FOR CAM TODAY!!!"

: "MY FAULT SON. I WILL DO THAT NOW. I'M SURE NO ONE WILL NOTICE"

They are father and son that live together. The son started Matt Ryan last week when Cam Newton was on a bye. He then benched Ryan on Wednesday to start Newton, whom he has started every other week since week 2. Even if he meant to start Ryan, but didnt do it by accident, I dont think it should be permitted. It opens too many doors.

It changes something for the team playing him. This is definitely something that the entire league needs to be made aware of.

Obviously it looks fishy and you should either post a 'what's up' message on your board or email the commish private. Just don't rule out that he got an email or VM asking him to make this change and did not get to it right away. Sort of sucks if that is the case since it is hard to call BS on father/son.

How do we know the dad didn't stay logged in as the commissioner and the son didn't make the switch without the father's knowledge?Either way, it needs to be brought up to the rest of the league. Either the commissioner has got to go or the son does.

Don't get ahead of yourself...I'm sure that's the excuse daddy will use. Scum like this usually resorts to throwing their own children under the bus.

Ditto. We allow voice mails, texts, or e-mails to commish to override the website, as long as the message is received prior to kickoff. In the league I commish, I often can't actually make the update until Sunday night.

I allow this as well, but also tell the owner he needs to let his opponent know in order to avoid later controversies.

Exactly what was thinking. That or he also has the commish password.

Wow, I would hate that. Imagine seeing yourself up by 25 points with a game over, and finding out the next day that there was a player change.

Yep. I have no problem with a phone in, part of life. BUT I do my best to notify the other team and make sure the other guy does as well

Yeah I hadn't thought of that angle but as a commish, I just wouldn't offer this level of service in a fantasy league. Great of you guys to do this I guess but it's way more accommodating than I would want to get. Sooner or later this would bite me in the rear end because of something I did or forgot to do.

In the league I commish, I allow lineup changes to be called into me in the event an owner doesn't have computer access for some reason. And there have been times over the years where somebody called me before kickoff with a lineup change, but I was away from a computer too, so I couldn't input the change until after kickoff, sometimes after the game. In these cases, I had the owner notify their opponent before kickoff, otherwise all hell would break loose.

It's possible this is what happened, but with it being his son, there's no way to know if he's being honest.

as soon as he made the change an email should have been sent to every owner in the league and a message should have been posted on the league site explaining why he did it (assuming there is a good/honest reason for it)......anything less leaves the door open for questions...

and the tough part is.....if he plays the "he told me so (phone call, etc) I just wasn't able to get to it right away" card....there really won't be any way to prove it or not.....

at least if he had sent out an email/posted the reason on the website right away, he would be giving the impression that he was trying to be up front/honest about it.....

right now, no matter what he says......unless you pull phone/email/text records....there would be no way to know if the change was supposed to occur prior to kickoff, and for that reason, the commish needs to step up and reverse the change for the good of the league even if the move really was legit......his negligence needs to take the hit here and sorry it costs your son a loss, but it is also the son's responibility to make sure his team is taken care of.....the son could have also notified other people in the league that the change needs to happen....that is why it is always good to contact the commish and the guy you are playing.....whether it is emial/phone/text...whatever.....

This would be my first inclination not to be a part of this league. All sorts of gray areas with this rule.

Which is why I wouldn't say anything yet. Just continue to spy the lineup changes for the rest of the regular season. Go in sometime today and copy a screenshot of this timestamped switch from Cam to Ryan. If this wasn't a legit lineup switch, I'd let them think they got away with it. If he was cheating and "got away with it" it WILL happen again, you just need to give him enough rope to hang himself with. If (or more likely WHEN) it happens again, take another screenshot and submit both of them to you league. One time can be explained but twice is undisputable.

I think you've been watching too many Scooby Doo episodes. You should be striving for an open and honest league so be open and honest yourself. Raise the issue now (publicly or privately) and get all the cards on the table. Quietly building this body of evidence against someone to spring this big trap is hardly taking the high road.

We email lineups to the commish and phone calls would be allowed, but the opponent has to be informed of the change otherwise if the commish is okay with screwing you there is no system of checks and balances.

Fortunately our commish would sooner have the league shut down than cheat. Sometimes I forget what a great job he does...maybe I'll send him a nice muffin basket or spa gift certificate.

Super suspect. I would bring it up to the rest of the league. Who knows how often this has been going on.
I know mfl and rtsports you can go back to any week of the year and see lineup changes, and when they were made. not sure if the freebie sites do that though (nfl.com yahoo, ect...)

You should consider modifying that rule to also require the owner to notify his opponent as well. Keeps everyone happy and puts the onus on the owner making the change and not on you having to prove he requested the change.

Yeah, in this day and age of texting and social media, it should be easy for anyone to let the commish AND their opponent know of any lineup changes (in the event that they can't get online to change it themselves in time).

Been running this league for 15 years and never had an issue with it. Basic rule is deal with integrity, and the fact that as Commish I keep all recordings for the entire season, so if anyone doubts it I can play it for them with the automated timestamp. The reality is we're a bunch of old guys and not everyone has smart phones or they are doing family stuff on Sunday afternoons, so being by the computer and waiting to see the latest news isn't always the priority. For me, we all enjoy the league and as Commish I take it as my responsibility to ensure the league runs smooth and even dealing with the minor stuff. In regards to the other posts earlier, we do similar items where we ask the other owner to tell his opponent what's up if it's a call in. To each their own though.
