need for backup quarterback (1 Viewer)

I drafted Phillip Rivers in my draft. By the time I looked at backups, they were gone. I can still pick up a backup on waivers, but he would be rated very low as of right now. Qbs in my league get four points per td. Did I leave myself vulnerable if he gets injured, or should I just roll with one qb?

The answer is obviously yes, but the odds are in your favor. IIRC, Rivers hasn't missed a game for a long while.

I would pick up a backup QB, especially if it's a money league. Nothing sucks more than kicking in 50 or 100 bucks and then watching your team lose games because your QB got hurt and you have to waiver wire manage the position all year long.

is one of those guys going to fix that? I am not sold. Chances are you will pick the wrong one anyways and still be surfing wire throughout year

Let's make this a general question instead of one that's specific to your particular situation.I've finished drafts and headed into the season with just one quarterback before. Will the guys currently on waivers still be on waivers after week one? If so, the only reason to pick one up now (instead of after the season starts) is if you think one will have a big game in week one and therefore be harder to pick up later.Otherwise, it depends on whether any players currently on your roster are worth less than whatever QBs are available on waivers. But I don't think it's always necessary to have a second QB heading into week one. You'll need to pick one up eventually to cover your starter's bye, but there's plenty of time for that. You'd also need to pick one up if your starter gets injured, but you're not necessarily better off doing it now than when the time comes. You have to consider the cost of having to cut someone who's currently on your roster.

So even though I might have drafted Carson Palmer or Ryan Fitzpatrick or Joe Flacco earler as a backup, you believe drafting quality depth at core positions instead is viable strategy?

What you might have done is immaterial at this point (for the record, I often only draft one QB, especially if the bye week is fairly late, but it stresses me out). The question now is whether you should nab a back-up QB. Personally, I don't see a huge difference between the guys on the ww, so I'd stand pat for now. The QBs aren't going to change much in value anyway, but flyer RBs and WRs can. You can get one at some point after the season starts. To me, that's not that much difference whether a guy is riding pine all year on my bench or the waiver wire. Plus, if my starter goes down, especially if it's someone I've built my team around, I'm going to have to make deals anyway to get back in the game anyway. In fact, the only time I draft back-up QBs is if I think a young QB is ready to make a big step forward and I want the potential trade bait and I like the value I'm getting.

WHAT size league? In a 12 teamer I would just roll with Rivers until the season gets started and you can evaluate Week 7 better

RIVERS has week 7 bye.

Let's assume Rivers plays all year and you need a week 7 player.

Everyone that said grab Matt Flynn .....sorry you're wrong.

WEEK7.

SEA @ SF You want FLYNN against 2011 best DEF?

ARI @ MIN PONDER at home vs KOLB. Kolb has FITZ/Floyd now and a big contract...they'll give him a chance to earn it.

TEN @ BUF Matt or JAKE @ Buf just signed Super Mario and other stud DEF guys. I tink they'll be decent. Hasselbeck to start season then Locker.

NYJ @ NE Jets are AT New England. I'm not counting on Sanchez there.

KC @ BYE so you don't want to grab CASSEL as the BYE Week Filler.

Based on the situation that you know you'll need a QB fill in I think PONDER or KOLB are the best options.

You should grab one now before someone else does.

Take the one with the most upside. I would think it's either of those too.

There's nothing that says you can't switch down the road.
