Need help - eliminating dead animal smell from car (1 Viewer)

I've had this happen in two different vehicles.

First check in the air filter area under the hood. Take out the filter and see if it's chewed up, droppings, etc. Vacuum it out and try to get suction so it pulls from deeper down the tube. Then replace the filter.

Next go into the space under the glove box on the passenger side and remove what you need to to get to the HVAC blower fan. When you take that baby out it's likely all messed up. One was even out of balance because they chewed the fan blades. Clean all that up. If it can't be cleaned well enough buy a used blower fan at a junkyard and plug it in. Put it back together. It will immediately be better but will dissipate more with time. Febreze that mf.

Get a mouser cat so hopefully it doesn't happen again.
thank you.

The neighbors around me have cats, but those effers aren't doing crap to reduce the mouse population.

I also had an entire mouse family recently in my outdoor gas grill.... i'm so sick of mice.

Take it to another mechanic. There has to be a dead carcass in there somewhere.
Seriously, a competent one should be able to find it.
i've used these guys numerous times over the years and their competency rate in the past has been superb...

They did say they could keep digging but they weren't sure whether i wanted to spend that type of dough for them to start taking crap apart given the car's age and milage
You are a freaking dentist. Pay them enough money to fix the problem and make the smell go away.

It's not about whether i have the money at this point.... of course i have it.

It's a cost relative to value of the vehicle.

If this was my brand new 2013 Trailblazer worth 25K I'd pay the money and be done with it.

But this is a 2004 worth maybe 5500.. you gonna drop 1200-1500 into a car worth that much.. especially when with some time it will likely erode on its own?

:lmao:

You are amazing. So, based on the above, I guess you have 3 options:

1) Drop $1200-1500 to fix the smell.

2) Get a new car since this one is old and worth maybe $5500 and not worth putting any more money into it

3) Do neither of the above and keep the car with the terrible smell for $0.

Hmm, I wonder which option looks enticing.

I'll tell you what i'm going to do... i'm going to take some of the rare good legit advice in the thread and on my day off this week i'm going to start taking a few things apart and do some additional diagnosis on my own.. i ordered http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002Z2MKO/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1%C2'>

I have full faith that either a little work on my part + some time is going to get this done...

I'm just lucky that for the most part it's the time of year where I can drive with the windows down and as long as I don't turn on the blower fan it doesn't smell at all... the smell has not gotten into the upholstery.

When you want to retire at 53.5 you have to live like you make 70k even when you make close to 200k.. it's challenging.. so i have to keep the lock on tight

If you can't find it, I'd try opening doors and windows and have it run in the driveway with the blower on (maybe even heat) for long stretches of time. Try to dry that bugger out.

So i took out the blower motor myself (surprisingly easy to follow the youtube video on how to do it) 5 bolts. And sprayed some cleanser way up into the ducts to elminate odors.

It seems to be smelling much better when the air conditioner and recycle is on, but there is still some lingering scent with the outside air coming in... I may be closer to identifying the problem!
