Need help with determining draft spots at annual pre-draft (1 Viewer)

I'm the commish in a 10 team PPR, IDP league. We have an annual predraft to go over rules, league changes, etc. Part of the predraft is to have a fun, random way to get our draft spots. In the past, we've had mini boat races, throwing darts at cards, football toss, etc

Right now I'm thinking about having an auction where the highest bidder gets the spot. However, some managers in the league could make more then others so it wouldn't be fair on a money factor, so it was suggested to cap each pick at $25, with a 30 second clock to bid. The money would go into catering something for our draft or some sort of weekly prizes.

If I cap it at $25 and multiple guys want the same spot and bid $25, I'm trying to think of a way to then determine who gets that spot.

I'm looking for any ideas at this point.

Thanks

So I'm putting it out to all the creative football minds for some help.

I don't like the idea of bidding. Try to take $$$ out of it. Maybe Chinese auction style, multi-round.

If you use FAAB (free-agent auction bidding) - and every league should - one idea would be to have owners bid for draft position out of their annual FAAB budget. Everyone throws in a blind bid, and the highest bid gets their choice of draft slot, second-highest gets second choice, etc.

That way no one has to put up any additional real $$$ beyond the entry fee, but those who bid highest are still giving up something significant in terms of week-to-week roster flexibility.

I really like this idea, pretty cool.

In my league that's been together with the same guys for 12 years now, we don't use FAAB money, but we do the 12 names out of the hat to determine preference order. Also, we key each of the three divisions by draft slot, so one division is picks 1, 4, 7, and 10, another is 2, 5, 8, and 11, and the last is 3, 6, 9, 12. Some people who are up early in the preference order usually jump on the top few picks, but eventually people just jump into the division(s) with the softest owners. Love the idea of using the FAAB budget to determine preference order.

We just pull team name out of 1 hat, draft position out of another. One year I tried the ping pong ball thing only to realize that somehow I had 13 ping pong balls in the bag, not 12. Had to do it all over. I had to buy a LOT of drinks that night.

I've wondered if it is possible to do a preseason fantasy league to determine the draft order for the regular season. Sounds like a pain, but it might be fun. You'd have to just do it as a total points thing instead of head to head. Little too late for this year, but maybe next year.

Poker tourney is pretty fun. Depending on league mates, you may have to raise blinds quickly or it lasts way too long with 12 people though

We do something similar but we force picks 1-6 and 7-12 into the same divisions. So if the draft is top heavy in round 1, teams 7-12 have a 1 in 6 chance of making the SB.

I would consider having each team pick the Winners of the week 3 Pre-Season games and for the "tie-breaker" provide the final score (or Total points) of the Bengals @ Cards game! :drive:

1) Have the contest listed above w an entry fee of $20 Then for $50 get your name tossed in the hat for first overall pick

2) I guess you could add some type of grouping/tiers to the contest ie. If you wager $20, you have a shot at picking 1st overall .. Or If you wager $50, you may pick 2nd, 3rd, 4th (depending upon how many spend $50) and obviously the W/L scoring

One thing we started doing to keep the consolation bracket competitive in the playoffs is give that winner 1st pick the next year. Everyone else is random draw.
