Netflix ... time to cancel? (1 Viewer)

I've been a Netflix subscriber since roughly its inception. I still remember receiving DVDs in the mail. But I'm reaching my breaking point. It's not so much the coming price increase, although that's certainly part of it. I'm a football guy, so I don't need to shoot the lock of the wallet to afford the $1/month increase. The issue is more of where the money is going.

With respect to their entertainment offerings, they are no longer as attractive as they once were. They used to be the only game in town. Now the quality is spread over a myriad of streaming services. I took a look at my Netflix list and was underwhelmed by what was on it. Some of the programming and movies have been on there for years, and for whatever reason, I haven't been impelled to watch any of them. There are a few on there that, when future seasons arrive (assuming they ever do), I might have a small pang of regret, but those are few and far between (e.g., One Piece, Three Body Problem, Stranger Things).

But that's not really my fundamental issue. As way of explanation (digression?), I used to donate to the universities from which I graduated. Eventually it dawned on my that I was paying the salaries of the students that were calling during dinner. Nothing against the students; they need to fund the outrageous cost of college somehow. Rather, shame on me for paying to be annoyed. (I've sinced donated anonymously. As long as I get the tax break, it's a win/win). My current subscription is through Feb 5th. I'm 99% certain I'll be canceling.

The convoluted point I'm trying to make is: I don't want sports programming scattered over umpteen streaming services. One of the justifications for the latest price increase is the need to pay the rights fees. No thank you.

I don't expect anyone to follow my lead. I just wanted to vent.

Now get the **** off my lawn!

Despite thier dominance of the market and the perception that Netflix is the one must have streamer, their product does actually suck. Very little quality original content and their TV/movie library is pretty underwhelming.

I absolutely will not watch NFL on the streamers, I'm not about that, I can find something else to do. As far as all of the services, I just bounce from one to another. Build a list of shows to watch, watch shows on one streamer, cancel and move on to the next. I'm not a fan of paying for something I'm not using.

Dropped Netflix over a year ago when I switched phone carriers. I was getting it for free. I very rarely miss it.

Yup. We canceled a year ago for similar reasons.

I intend to keep Netflix because I find I like their original content more, and they more non-original content that I prefer. 80% of the time I watch something on streaming, it's on Netflix.

However your point regarding sports programming is salient and one I hadn't though of. I'm okay with price hikes for new original content. But sports games that I already have access to being further broken up from their original one single source is not something I want, so why would I want to pay extra to make it happen?

In that sense, it's like them asking "we need to increase your prices so we can raise extra money to do that thing that you do not want us to do", which I agree is kind of crappy.

We get Netflix for a couple months a couple times each year. We had it October - December and will get it again may - July most likely. That’s more than enough for us.

We just started a max subscription which we’ll keep until we get Netflix again.

Yes, this is the primary issue. I personally try to not to watch anything that requires streaming. If we all take a stand it make it not profitable for them, they'll stop doing it.

Cancelled a few months back because I've rarely watched it the last few years.

And then I saw them putting on boxing match between a 60 year old and a YouTuber, and felt much better about the decision.

Certainly not going to support the NFL putting games on Netflix.

my backlog of movies/shows that I want to watch is way long but I want to do netflix for like a month or 2 and just stream Stranger Things and whatever else I can find on there.

It did seem like the thing you had to have for years, but I got rid of it a couple years ago after I realized there’s just not that much I want to watch. I did get it back for the football game and figured it was worth it to give it another try at least for a month. I watched a few things and that was about it and I cancelled.

Netflix is about the cost of one movie ticket per month and I use my daughter's account anyway.

I don't like the idea of live sports fragmentation but it seems inevitable because it's the one thing that reliably grabs eyeballs.

I also have had Netflix since the red envelopes in the mail days. My wife and I used to have fun changing the qued movies rankings. I still enjoy it. I rewatched Dexter this past year. I just started to rewatch the Walking Dead. Forgot how good it was the first few seasons. I'll prolly rewatch Peaky Blinders again. As I've gotten older I just don't watch live sports anymore. I'm highlight and box score surf guy. Alhough the constant raising price is getting silly it's still cheap for what it provides for me. Imo

I drop and add pretty much all the streaming services for a month or two just to catch up with their shows. Try to do it when the shows debut so I can watch with the majority of the public and not get spoiled. That being said, Netflix (with their live events) complicates that schedule a bit.

One of the good things about Netflix is that they don't throttle their episodes, particularly over a period of a few billing cycles to maximize their profits.

It won't be long until people just start hosting the bulk of their original content for Kodi if this is not already happening.

firestick>cinemaapk>vpn and the need for netflix is negated.
That's interesting. I think the rise of music and video streaming can be partially attributed to making it cheap and easy enough that pirating and "work arounds" just weren't worth the hassle anymore.

As costs keep going up, we may start seeing more and more people open to being inconvenienced.

In my case, one of my daughters uses my account now for an extra $8 a month. It was free for my 2 daughters and multiple friends, who would call me if the password changed!

I like their content, including some good foreign movies and series, plus interesting documentaries. You are what you eat, a twin study, and the Bryan Johnson Don't Die were very interesting.

All personal preference, but I've thought they were the worst of the streaming options for years - ever since the others have gotten wise and took their shows to their own services. They got there first and had the benefit of having the name recognition, but IMO their original content is pretty bad compared to the others and now they don't have access to the premium movies and shows from other studios. Now that we are getting into the $25/month range per channel, and needing 5 streamers to watch the stuff we want to see, it's getting right back to cable levels of annoyance and it feels more and more people are making choices like you. We are as well, and recently cut ties with Netflix and HBO. The bang for the buck isn't there anymore for us.

Yeah Netflix's movie selection leaves alot to be desired but I love documentaries way more than movies and no other streaming service can touch what Netflix puts out there.

We have a couple streaming services. My daughter has Netflix, we all live under one roof so me, my other daughter and her split it 3 ways. I flipped her $6 bucks over the weekend for the next 2 months

Now when she moves out, might be a different story.

It's great we have a lot of choices......so choose what you like.

I have Netflix Premium as I love a lot of their original content. We are always watching something on Netflix.

The other streaming services I have consistently are:

Max - Free with my ATT bundle of internet and wireless.
Prime - Yes I am a Prime member.
Shudder - I am a horror movie maven.

So I technically pay for Netflix, Prime and Shudder year to year (I buy 85% of my goods on Amazon).

I currently have a 50% for a year on Paramount Plus and am enjoying the original content and once that expires late this year (November) we are done.

Currently have $1.99 per month for 6 months on Peacock. Once that's done we are done.

Had 3 months of free Apple TV two times in the last two years and binged a ton of their content.

Tubi, Pluto and Plex are free and have some great classic movie content and retro shows I used to love and again...it's free.

Choices are great....let's hope they stay around and not consolidate too much. Although we know that is what typically happens.

Did the Disney and Hulu thing and finally got rid of both last year. Just not enough content I want to justify the cost. Did all the Star Wars original content which was great.....yeah I want to see the New Alien Earth series....so I will wait for a coupon offer as always...use it...binge for a month...done.

The Streaming merry go round is a game we play often.

Apparently Disney + premium is showing ads before (and maybe even during?) content.
From the Disney help page:
If you subscribe to Disney+ Premium (No Ads), Disney Bundle Duo Premium: Disney+ (No Ads) and Hulu (No Ads), Disney Bundle Trio Premium: Disney+ (No Ads), Hulu (No Ads), and ESPN+ (With Ads), or Legacy Disney Bundle: Disney+ (No Ads), Hulu (With Ads), and ESPN+ (With Ads), on-demand movies and shows on Disney+ will be generally free of commercial interruption. However, the Disney+ service included in these plans may include limited promotional content including clips and trailers that highlight content available on Disney+ or other Disney products and services, branded content, product integrations, or sponsorship messaging. In addition, ads will be served in select live and linear content, including TV streams, special events, and much of the ESPN+ sports content available on Disney+.
Yikes

If it wasn't clear before, streaming services with ads are far more profitable than those without even with the additional charge for "no ads". I'd expect Netflix and others to follow Disney's lead.

Too bad there isn't a TV/movie streamer like Spotify. They have just about every piece of music I want to hear. Sure, Neil Young and others might pull their music to make a point, but it typically ends up back on Spotify.

Now it's worse than cable used to be. Splintered programming at a higher cost with ads. I think i'll keep Amazon Prime since I use the service. That's about the only streaming service going forward.

I'm a sucker for dumb action flicks. And with the amount that I travel for work, I tend to watch a lot of them. Netflix is the only streaming service I have 365 days a year. Others we will pop on and off depending on if we want to watch something specific but Netflix is a mainstay.

I believe it’s just for live events (like sports). Since those are for other broadcasts and commercials included, I think it’s more of a case of not having much of an option.

But there’s no question all the services are pushing hard for folks to pay a serious premium to be as ad free as possible. Think we’re about to cut out most of our streaming services. Just not that much that I’m all that interested in watching anymore.

I’m a subscriber for over two decades (dvds and then an early adopter of streaming) and came close to cancelling recently. Changed phone plans and downgraded to the ad supported version for free so will keep it for time being until that promo changes.

I was a big fan of their original content for a long time but they cancelled too many things I loved, it was the same reason I dropped cable a long time ago. IMO, they need to change their model for new shows and seasons. The whole binge watching thing is too short-sighted. Never thought I would advocate for it, but weekly releases let's people build up excitement each week, discuss with each other, obsess over details and predictions, and build a fan base. So many of their shows got canceled after their 2nd seasons because most of the time people had forgotten about the show after binging it one weekend over a year ago. Or in some cases they had no idea it was coming back because Netflix does a terrible job advertising. I know they have their own analytics and they are still very successful, but I can't help feel weekly releases or a hybrid like Amazon with the first 3 eps is a much better approach to build long-term investment in more shows that would keep users coming back and engaged.

A $2 increase. Kind of nickel and diming.

Even worse than NF is Disney Plus who informed customers paying for their ad free tier that they will begin to see some ads.

I just got the email
