New England DEF/ST (1 Viewer)

I know they lost some DBs so I'm curious what others think about their upcoming '08 campaign. Are they still a top 5 DEF?

No longer one of the first teams that come to mind in terms of a top 5 Def/ST, but that's not to say they can't do it.

Belichick seems to have an uncanny knack for simply turning and plugging somebody else in, but I still think there are questions.

Not real sure what's going on at LB (in addition to the secondary), and I don't know that they do either. They're keeping Seau in mind at this point, in possibly bringing him back.

EASY schedule....teams playing from behind will be throwing alot of picks.....pretty gravy playoff run Weeks 16-18

I'm a pretty objective Pats homer, and I'm pretty high on this defense. The consensus perception is OLD & SLOW. But the rookies (Mayo & Wheatley) look like they will contribute immediately. And Fernando Bryant looks solid at the other corner. Seymour is 100% healthy which he hasn't been in two years. Plus, Adalius Thomas will be full time OLB instead of switching back & forth last year. This should help the pass rush a lot. Add in some young improving depth (Pierre Woods, Brandon Meriweather) and a few other rookie x-factors (Shawn Crable) and this D could put up lots of points as they should be playing with the lead the majority of the time.

Also, if you get points for returns, rookie Matt Slater has looked great on kick returns in camps. (Of course, watching the Pats ST coverage vs. the Ravens, that could be more a function of bad coverage ;) )

I really think they are top 3, and with their schedule have a shot at #1. I'm not a big advocate of taking Ds early, but in most mocks I'm doing I find myself grabbing them in the 11th or 12th just because of the value I think they represent.

The New England offense will still continue to put alot of pressure on opposing Os, and once again the NE D will benefit. In fantasy terms, Ds that are supported by great Os produce #s. Theyll figure out their depth dilemnas, and Belichick wil have this unit humming by week 2. Seymour will be a better player this year at RDE, he OLBs will still get a bunch of sacks, Mayo will cover alot more ground in the middle, and Merriweather will give them another needed playmaker in the secondary at safety/nickel corner. Imo, this D is going to improve on last year despite losing Samuel.

Coach Bellichick is a master at putting people where they have to be to be highly successful. Most teams will have to gamble/attack New England to stay with them, this can lead to mistakes.

I have NE as my No. 3 defense behind SD and Minny.

I think this is correct rankings; however, at current ADP [sD (8.11) MIN (9.03) and NE (11.04)] I think Pats are the play.
