*** New England Patriot Offseason (2007) *** (1 Viewer)

Hobbs info and comments . . .

Three-plus months removed from a second surgery to repair a broken wrist that limited him throughout last season, Patriots cornerback Ellis Hobbs is looking toward the 2007 campaign with high hopes after an up-and-down sophomore season.

Hobbs battled through the September injury, playing with a cast and missing just a single game after the surgery. He started nine of 15 games and finished the year with 46 tackles and two interceptions. He then started all three postseason contests and may have played his best game of the year in the AFC title loss to the Colts. Hoping to be fully healthy by training camp, Hobbs looks to continue that upward trend this fall.

"My goal, going into the third year, is to be better than I was my first two years," Hobbs said following a recent workout at Gillette Stadium. "The thing I want to do this year is to be more consistent than I was last year. What you saw in the playoffs is how I want to play in every game, where you're going to get plays out of me consistently, every down, every series, every game."

Hobbs and his coaches would probably like to see the 2005 third-round pick make the developmental jump that Asante Samuel made in New England last season, one that saw the fourth-year corner tie for the NFL lead with 10 interceptions. According to Hobbs, Samuel's 2006 campaign should have ended in Hawaii.

"Asante ... the only thing he didn't get was a Pro Bowl, and I think he got hosed on that," Hobbs said.

When Samuel's contract expired this offseason, the Patriots immediately designated him their franchise player. He has yet to sign his one-year offer sheet or a long-term deal with New England. That makes Hobbs the lone veteran returning starter at cornerback. If Samuel doesn't return, is Hobbs ready to assume the role of a No. 1 NFL corner?

"That's how I look at it all the time. Regardless of what the stats say, or whatever, if I'm on the field and I'm starting, I'm looking (to be) the go-to-guy," Hobbs said. "And I think everybody should look at it like that on defense."

Regardless of how the Samuel situation plays out, the Patriots defense will have a new look with the addition of free-agent linebacker Adalius Thomas, the most coveted player on the market this offseason. And on offense, several prized players have joined the team since free agency began in March.

Hobbs, the confident corner, says he's excited about the moves, but cautions against becoming overconfident.

"I think we're putting out money and we're getting great players. Guys want to come in here and they want to win," Hobbs said. "Nobody's thinking a lot about (money). You're getting a lot of these veteran guys in here, and they just want to win. We're on a great path right now, but I don't want to be a paper champ, where we (just) look good on paper ... we need to win (the Super Bowl) this time around. I'm not saying that's going to happen, but that's the motivation."

The Patriots officially announced the signing of seven undrafted free agents prior to the team's May 12-13 rookie minicamp at Gillette Stadium. Boston College defensive back Larry Anam, Alabama-Birmingham linebacker Kyle Bissinger, Idaho State quarterback Matt Gutierrez, Northern Illinois tight end Jake Nordin, Rice running back Quinton Smith, Texas A&M linebacker Justin Warren and Texas-El Paso defensive lineman Zach West will join New England's nine draft picks at the two-day camp. Former Air Force safety Denny Poland will also reportedly be given a tryout at the camp.

What to look for in the 2007 Patriots

Medical alert: Rodney Harrison

There’s no questioning Harrison’s guts, leadership or intelligence. The issues are his knees, shoulder and assorted other body parts that have taken a pounding over 13 seasons. The 34-year-old has missed 19 games in the last two years.

Breakout Performer: Wes Welker

Welker caught 67 passes last year in Miami with a lousy offense led by two pathetic quarterbacks. Imagine what he’ll do in the slot with Donte’ Stallworth and Randy Moss drawing attention outside and, oh yeah, Tom Brady throwing him the ball. Welker might catch 100 passes.

The Next All-Pro: Logan Mankins

Pro Football Weekly thought Mankins deserved the honor last year. Your classic road paver at left guard, Mankins plays with a mean streak and possesses the rare ability to run block and pass block with equal aggressiveness. He was considered an overdraft as a 2005 first-rounder, but no one’s laughing now.

Best Newcomer: Adalius Thomas

There may not be a better fit in the league for what the Patriots [team stats] do than Thomas. The beastly 270-pounder was born to play in Belichick’s 3-4, thanks to his versatility, ability to get after the quarterback and fearlessness against the run. The curse of Ravens free agents struggling elsewhere ends here.

Possible Surprise Cut: Nick Kaczur

There are whispers out of Foxboro that the Pats are unhappy with Kaczur’s focus and work ethic. While he still has time to turn things around, he will be pushed at right tackle by second-year man Ryan O’Callaghan, who earned a starting job last year while Kaczur recovered from shoulder surgery.

Impact Rookie: Brandon Meriweather

Can there be any other choice? The Pats desperately need more speed in the secondary and Meriweather gives it to them in spades. Though he’s never going to be a Rodney Harrison-like force in the running game, Meriweather can be a weapon against teams like the Colts with outside speed.

Unexpected Contributor: Willie Andrews

Call this one a total hunch. The 2006 seventh-rounder made some plays in special teams and even took some snaps at corner in the playoffs. He’s a solid hitter who’s not afraid to stick his helmet in a pile. Let’s just say he’s unlikely to don a receiver’s jersey at camp, as he did last year.

Not the C. Brown I thought they would be signing . . .

I know there was talk as to what number Moss might get...

Watson on 84

The Patriots acquired Randy Moss in a draft-day trade. Now Moss might be considering a trade of his own -- for jersey No. 84.

The owner of that 84 jersey, tight end Benjamin Watson, said today that he's not married to the number.

"We’re willing to negotiate,” Watson said with a laugh.

Watson said there have been no "negotiations" to this point, but that there was some excitement in the team's locker room today, with Moss present.

Watson wore 89 in college at Georgia. Number 89 is retired by the Patriots (Bob Dee).

Patriots | Team re-signs Alexander

Sat, 26 May 2007 08:00:01 -0700

Christopher L. Gasper, of the Boston Globe, reports the New England Patriots signed exclusive-rights free-agent LB Eric Alexander to a one-year, $435,000 contract, according to agent Albert Elias.

I don't laugh at the Seau signing one bit, he was one of the best LBers in the run game last year and is a PERFECT depth guy. His forearm injury was completely a freak accident, and if he's fully recovered, I *expect* Seau to give the Patriots another good season of play. If he's there for the playoffs, he could be key.

Agreed. That said, I hope BB can find a way to take advantage of the flexibility of guys like Mike Vrabel and Adalius Thomas, and maybe some of the younger guys like Eric Alexander, Corey Mays, and Pierre Woods, to limit both Bruschi's and Seau's snaps a bit to keep them fresh for said playoffs.

A very sad day in the Patriots Nation today... LSU and Patriot Player Marquise Hill missing in Lake Pontchartrain

May 28, 2007

Marquise Hill

Patriots defensive end Marquise Hill is believed to be missing after a jetski accident in Louisiana on Sunday, WWLTV reports.

Hill's agent, Albert Elias, told WWLTV that Hill and a young woman were on Lake Pontchartrain and both fell into the water, which had a strong current. The woman managed to hold on to a pylon before being rescued, according to the report, while Hill was last seen floating away from the scene.

We'll be monitoring this story today.

Agent: 'We're praying'

Albert Elias, the agent for defensive end Marquise Hill, spoke with the young woman with whom Hill was jetskiing, and was told that Hill helped save her life..

Pats statement

The Patriots sent out the following this morning regarding Marquise Hill:

The New England Patriots are deeply concerned to learn about the missing status of New Orleans native Marquise Hill, who was reportedly last seen after suffering an accident while jet skiing on Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana. The U.S. Coast Guard is leading the search and rescue mission and will provide any updates on his status.

“We are all shocked,” said Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft after learning of the reports of Marquise’s accident. “We can only hope and pray that the search and rescue is successful. Our thoughts and prayers are with Marquise and his family. We know that Marquise is a strong young man and will remain optimistic while continuing to pray for his rescue.”

Hill update

The Times-Picuyane reports that the body of Marquise Hill was found this afternoon. Teammate Randall Gay was at the scene, and told the newspaper: "I know it's going to be hard in that locker room seeing his locker."

I died when I read this on the Patriots daily team update on USA Today. I mean, this would be piling on in my book . . .

In announcing his retirement and subsequent fall employment as an NFL analyst for ESPN former Jets, Cowboys, Buccaneers and Panthers wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson listed the Patriots among the teams that had shown interest in his receiving services this spring."Those guys were terrific, from Lane Kiffin to Bill Belichick to Jeff Fisher." Johnson said of the Oakland, New England and Tennessee coaches who were among a half-dozen teams to call the former No. 1 overall pick. "They all wanted me to play football for them. At the end of the day, it just didn't fit into what I wanted to do now."Johnson reportedly agreed to a multi-year contract with ESPN to appear on multiple telecasts for the network.

Some notes from Pats Passing Camp:

http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/reiss_pieces/

Five final observations from today's passing camp at Gillette Stadium:

1) Adalius Thomas on the move. The Patriots' big free-agent signing has been advertised as a versatile player who can line up at various positions. This was evident in one of the team's final sets of drills in 11 on 11 work, as Thomas moved from inside linebacker, to playing with his hand on the ground as a down lineman/rusher, to backpedaling in pass coverage. Thomas spent much of the practice lining up at inside linebacker.

2) Tom Brady in command. As one would expect, when Brady is running a drill, there is no question as to who is in charge. While it's the offseason, players weren't in pads, and it was only a small snapshot of a much larger picture, Brady looks as sharp as ever.

3) Randy Moss in focus. It was interesting to watch Moss developing a rapport with Tom Brady and Co. in the passing game. Moss worked as an outside receiver, and showed a part of his competitive side when slipping on the wet field during drills in which there was no defense. He pounded the ground in frustration and shouted. In 11 on 11 drills, Moss caught one touchdown pass down the left sideline from Tom Brady (Tory James in one-on-one coverage) but shortly before that play, he couldn't corral a long pass down the right sideline from Matt Cassel (cornerback Mike Richardson in coverage, with help from safety Rashad Baker). On the latter play, Moss was knocked to the ground by accident as Baker closed in and couldn't pull up in time.

4) Interceptions. Second-year defensive back Willie Andrews and 11-year veteran defensive back Chad Scott both intercepted Matt Cassel in 11 on 11 drills near the end of practice. Andrews, playing safety, showed solid instincts to gather in the interception after the ball was tipped on a throw behind Kelley Washington.

5) Media interest. For perspective on the interest the Patriots are generating among the media, consider that 50 members of the media were granted credentials for this passing camp. A crew from ESPN and the NFL Network were among the crowd.

From Patriots.com:

Passing Camp Notes

· In addition to Seymour, a number of other Patriots were absent from Thursday’s practice: running back Laurence Maroney, wide receivers Donté Stallworth and Chad Jackson (recovering from a knee injury), safeties James Sanders and rookie Brandon Meriweather, and tight end David Thomas, who’s nursing a broken foot.

· Defensive lineman Jarvis Green and cornerback Randall Gay were also not at practice. They are in New Orleans helping prepare for Hill’s funeral services.

· Quarterback Vinny Testaverde, who’s still not under contract with the Patriots, was practicing again with the team. He took turns in passing drills with Tom Brady, Matt Cassel, and rookie free agent Matt Gutierrez.

· In between plays, Brady and wide receiver Randy Moss were often seen working on their chemistry. They tossed the football back and forth several times and appear to be getting quite friendly with one another.

· Brady also appeared comfortable with newcomer Kyle Brady, throwing to the tight end frequently during 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.

· Wide receiver Wes Welker showed great hands and quickness and a non-stop motor throughout practice. His performance stood out.

· Welker, along with Faulk, Bam Childress, and Jonathan Smith took turns returning punts.

· Adalius Thomas took a few reps at inside linebacker in some drills.

· Running back Sammy Morris sported a red (no-contact) jersey, but took part in the entire workout.

· At one point, rookie linebacker Oscar Lua manned the inside spot alongside his boyhood hero, Junior Seau.

· Toward the end of the morning, Brady and Moss hooked up on a well-executed, deep touchdown pass.

Moss separated nicely from cornerback Tory James when he saw Brady launch the ball in his direction.

· Gutierrez’s delivery looked strong and crisp. Nearly every pass he threw was right on target.

· Kicker Stephen Gostkowski made several long field goals (from around 50 yards) with Lonie Paxton snapping and Josh Miller holding. He nailed all his attempts during the team field goal session to end practice. Gostkowski also worked a bit on onside kicks.

· Miller, who’s returning from a shoulder injury, drove several perfect punts (tight spirals that turned over in a towering arch). He also focused on his hang time, with special teams coach Brad Seely standing by with a stopwatch.

· Safety Rodney Harrison made an impressive defensive play near the end of practice. Brady lofted what looked like a sure touchdown pass to Morris, but Harrison leapt in the air at the last minute to tip the ball away.

· Sixth-round pick Justise Hairston showed explosiveness whenever he carried the ball.

· DB Chad Scott picked off a Cassel pass during an 11-on-11 play.

· Sixth-rounder Mike Richardson broke up a long pass intended for Moss.

· On two occasions, an offensive lineman was seen taking a lap around the field. Wesley Britt and rookie Clint Oldenburg were the apparently guilty parties.

The players return to the practice field this coming Tuesday for a three-day mini camp.

just a tidbit I came across...

Samuel on Jets’ radar

By Albert Breer/ MetroWest Daily News

Wednesday, June 6, 2007 - Updated: 07:00 AM EST

FOXBORO - Asante Samuel has a solid case for seeking a cash bonanza from the Patriots. If they won’t pay him what he wants, he knows other teams will.

And one just might be the New York Jets.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, “several teams” have expressed a willingness to meet Samuel’s asking price, which is a contract in the neighborhood of the eight-year, $80 million deal free agent Nate Clements signed with the 49ers.

The Patriots offered a one-year, $7.79 million franchise tender that Samuel has yet to sign.

The source said the Jets inquired about Samuel, but declined to acknowledge their interest or disclose if it was affected by the NFL draft-day trade that netted Pitt corner Darrelle Revis in the first round.

A second source added that the Patriots are holding firm for the two first-round picks they’d receive as compensation, if Samuel signed an offer sheet and they declined to match.

While it appears unlikely any of Samuel’s suitors will meet that demand, the Jets at least tested the waters. Their interest makes sense. New York coach Eric Mangini served as Samuel’s secondary coach in 2003-04 and defensive coordinator in 2005 before taking the Jets job. He knows what Samuel can do.

The Jets are in solid salary cap position, with roughly $6 million to spend, though a portion of that money will be used to sign draft picks. Regardless, there’s room to fit Samuel with a little maneuvering. The bigger issue would be getting him out of New England, since the Pats are unlikely to deal with their rivals. Reached by e-mail last night, Samuel’s agent, Alonzo Shavers, declined comment.

The market for top-flight corners was set at the start of free agency when Clements inked his megadeal with the 49ers. The contract includes a $10 million signing bonus and a $10 million option bonus next year, which voids the final year of the deal, making it a seven-year, $64.02 million pact.

Also, the final three years of Clements’ contract are worth $34 million, money the corner may never see.

The cornerback market was further defined by Dre’ Bly, who signed a five-year, $33 million contract with $16 million in guarantees after being acquired by the Denver Broncos in a trade with Detroit. Bly’s contract may be a more accurate barometer of Samuel’s worth.

Meanwhile, the Pats opened their minicamp yesterday at Gillette Stadium, and players continued to keep their focus on the field.

“The guys that you’ve played with in the past, there’s a personal relationship with them,” said fellow corner Ellis Hobbs. “But I think all of us that have been in the league understand that it’s a business. I mean, the league changes over every year. You lose players, you gain players. One person moves out, the next person moves in.

And from Schefter

(June 5, 2007) -- When the Patriots convened for their voluntary minicamp Tuesday, franchised cornerback Asante Samuel was no where to be found.

Patriots CB Asante Samuel is ready to sit out the entire season if he doesn't get a new deal.

The Patriots will not see Samuel Wednesday, Thursday or any day soon. Samuel is vowing not to report until the 10th week of the season, unless he has a new long-term deal before then.

Problem is, the Patriots and Samuel's representative, Alonzo Shavers, have not spoken for a month. But they are expected to talk next week.

Shavers said he will reach out to the Patriots next week in an effort to try to jumpstart talks and see if the two sides can put their differences behind them and work out an agreement. Samuel sure hopes so.

When Samuel told the Boston Globe this week that he would not report until the 10th week of the season, he actually was holding back some.

Samuel actually has considered skipping the entire season. Whether he actually will is, at best, doubtful. But the fact that the thought has crossed his mind indicates how disappointed Samuel is.

I absolutely have resigned myself to this situation not resolving itself with Asante as a Patriot. I'd sttle for a trade to the Jets for Revis, which qualifies as a first rounder, and another first, or even as low as a third, to rid themselves of the situation. Asante is a ver, very good, possibly even Great, cover corner. But, as was with Ty Law, he is made better with the system. There's no settling this amicably with him at this point, not that I see.

Samuel is not a great corner. Not even close to Ty Law in his prime.I realize you didn't say either of those things, but I'm just sayin'.

Samuel is an excellent cover corner. He stick to receivers like glue.He is not one to make spectacular interceptions, but is more often than not the beneficiary of poorly thrown balls.I think he is slightly overrated, and at this pointI am salivating over the possibility of 2 more first round picks for New England.

I would disagree with this analysis entirely. I think he's a decent cover corner, but not a truly great one. Last year it didn't happen as often, but he does get burned on occassion, usually because he's trying to jump routes. That's how he seems to get most of his picks - from jumping routes, not from poorly thrown balls.I think he's the best corner the Pats have, and they are clearly a better team with him than without him, but I'd gladly take just one 1st rounder for him.

This is probably a very minor signing...just passing it along.

C.J. Jones, WR SEA

News: The New England Patriots signed WR C.J. Jones on Thursday after he spent the past two regular seasons out of football. Jones originally signed with Cleveland in May 2003 as an undrafted free agent from Iowa but spent 11 games on the inactive list and the other five weeks on the practice squad. He was on the Browns' practice squad for the entire 2004 season. He had 10 catches in NFL Europa in the spring of 2005, but was cut by Cleveland before the 2005 opener and by Seattle in last year's training camp.

I was hoping they would deal him this last past draft to Washington for a first rounder. I think you could have easily gotten his replacement in this last draft.

Hairston new kid on block

By Karen Guregian

Boston Herald General Sports Reporter and Columnist

Saturday, June 9, 2007 - Updated: 12:58 PM EST

FOXBORO - The soundbites you hear from Tom Brady [stats], Tedy Bruschi [stats], Rodney Harrison [stats], et al., during this time of year are all pretty similar when it comes to talking about and assessing the team.

The perspective is different through the eyes of a rookie, who is experiencing it all for the first time.

Running back Justise Hairston, who played at Division 1-AA Central Connecticut State, offered wonderful insights Thursday after the completion of his first minicamp.

First off, Hairston had Sammy Morris’ helmet in tow as he stood and talked with a handful of reporters. It’s a rookie passage, carrying another player’s equipment to and from the field.

Second, even though Hairston agreed to be interviewed, the role of a rookie is to be seen, and not heard. That piece of wisdom is passed down from coach Bill Belichick and is reinforced from the veteran players.

“They tell all the rookies coming in to shut up and play,” Hairston said. “It’s cool, because we really don’t have much to say. We don’t know anything, we’re just following the pack. It’s cool because you get to learn that way.”

That doesn’t mean the stars on the team, or veteran players, abandon the rookies, or let them sink or swim on their own.

According to Hairston, who was one of 16 rookies participating in the mandatory camp, it’s just the opposite. He’s received plenty of help from fellow backs Morris, Kevin Faulk [stats] and Heath Evans [stats].

“Heath Evans, Sammy, those guys, they want to help you, just as much as the coaches do. Any time they have an extra minute or two, ask a question, they’re more than glad to help us,” Hairston said. “They tell us, ‘Hey, don’t do this,’ or ‘You need to do this,’ or ‘You might need to look in your playbook a little more.’ That’s the kind of thing you need. This is a business. They don’t care, they’re willing to help for the team.”

Hairston couldn’t say enough about Faulk. Hairston, who earned All-America honors, can see why Faulk has been a valued member of three championship teams.

“Kevin’s been in the league eight years and he’s been very successful. Now I can see why he’s had that success,” Hairston said. “This guy comes out every day, he knows everything. He knows what the receivers do, what the fullbacks do, he knows the blocking schemes of the offensive line. He’s making the calls before the offensive line sometimes. It’s cool to see, because you can see how he’s grasped the offense.”

Sometimes, the 24-year-old thinks to himself how amazing it is to be at this camp with the likes of Brady, Bruschi, Harrison, Junior Seau and Randy Moss. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound back was a sixth-round pick, but has taken note of how all the veterans do their jobs.

“The way the veterans handled themselves is very business-like. At the same time, it’s enjoyable,” Hairston said. “I mean, guys come out here with a workman’s mentality, and with a purpose. It’s so much fun to be around it.”

Vinny update

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

Quarterback Vinny Testaverde told Sporting News Radio today that he will be back with the Patriots this season. Testaverde was a guest on host Tony Bruno’s show.

We saw you talking with Chiefs coach Herman Edwards. Are you going to be back in the NFL, joining the Kansas City Chiefs?

"You guys are right, I'll be back in the NFL but it won't be with the Chiefs. I'll actually be playing for the Patriots again this year."

Has that been announced?

"No, after two-a-days are over [in training camp] I'll go back and sign my contract. I'll wait until then."

Player Spotlight: Quarterback Vinny Testaverde

If he is resigned by the Pats, put him down for one TD at some point in the season. I am sure Coach BB will let Testaverde continue his streak. :goodposting:

No deal: Deadline passes on Samuel talks

Sides were never close; holdout could be next step

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff | July 16, 2007

The Patriots and cornerback Asante Samuel have not reached an 11th-hour contract agreement today, according to a source directly involved in the negotiation.

Today marked the deadline for franchise players to sign contract extensions. Samuel can only play for the $7.79 million tender if he decides to report to the Patriots.

In June, Samuel said he planned on holding out until the 10th week of the season.

The gap between the sides was significant, which essentially halted the progress of any negotiations. While Samuel's agent, Alonzo Shavers, noted that the sides had recent discussions, they weren't fruitful and never reached the point in which specific contract language was being discussed.

Samuel's camp had been focusing on the first three years of a contract, and was seeking around $30 million. The first three years of any deal are considered key, because players are generally guaranteed they will earn the money even though NFL contracts aren't guaranteed.

Meanwhile, the Patriots' most recent offer would have paid Samuel an average of about $6 million per season, with approximately $13 million in bonuses.

With the sides so far apart, the talks never reached a point in which a deal was close.

I checked around and it appears that Maroney may miss the beginning of training camp but all involved still feel he will be good to go in Week 1 of the regular season. We may not see a lot of him on the field in live action between now and then but it looks like that is more precautionary than anything else.

It sounds like the Patriots have all the rookies signed but Brandon Meriweather. Any word on this yet?

Patriots PUP List:

WR Troy Brown

RB Justise Hairston

WR Chad Jackson

CB Eddie Jackson

S Mel Mitchell

DL Richard Seymour

TE David Thomas

WR Kelley Washington

What is the word on Richard Seymour?

NER-

Im not following. Are these guys on a pre-season PUP list? I wasnt aware of this. I dont know what the word is on Seymour, but Ill try and find something out.

What do you make of the WR situation? I dont see the team keeping more than 6 guys thru final cuts, and we know only about 4 or maybe 5 will ever be active any given week. I think there are 8 significant wideouts right now on the roster...Moss, Stallworth, Gaffney, Caldwell, Brown, Welker, Washington and Chad Jackson. Two of these guys are gonna end up on other rosters, imo, and its gonna be a tough call. Id have to think right now Washington is definitely on the outside looking in, and Brown may be last on the list, which I find very tough to even say. Outside of that one ugly drop by Caldwell in the Colts game, I really thought Caldwell and Gaffney were getting it done well enough last year to contribute to a title. Both of these guys seem to be fair bets to make the team again. This is obviously the story of the preseason for the Pats right now. I cant ever recall such a fiercely anticipated position battle. Do you, or anyone else, see the possibility of trading one of these guys away for a mid-round pick to help clear up the situation?? Is there any possibility that Brown gets cut and then soon thereafter retires and stays with the team in a coaching capacity? Its gonna be an interesting August.

might want to check out the WR snapshot by Mike Riess

Darnell Bing was released. Weren't the Pats interested(or rumorred to be) interested in him last spring before the draft?

You would think that Briggs signing his tender would have to be a positive for the Patriots in dealing with Samuel. I just dont see how he holds out til game 10 leaving $5 million or so on the table. Samuel should sign his tender soon after the start of camp.

Meriweather signs, but misses sessions

Now if Asante would get into camp, we could get this show going!

No Samuel, no surprise

As expected Asante Samuel was not at practice, but cornerback Ellis Hobbs said the Patriots can only deal with the guys who are in camp. Hobbs said the "train moves on."

Stallworth on PUP list

Receiver Donte' Stallworth isn't off to the start he hoped for after signing a free agent deal in the offseason. Stallworth, one of 12 receivers in camp, was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

Chad Scott carted off the practice field after landing awkwardly on his leg. Judging from the amount of pain he was in, odds are he's done for the season.

Man, the Pats really have some poor luck with DBs.

Man, I thought he would actually be a good fit for the Patriots...

Hairston released

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

The Patriots announced the release of rookie running back Justise Hairtson, one of their sixth-round draft choices.

Hairston had signed a three-year contract with a $55,500 signing bonus last week. He had been placed on the physically unable to perform list earlier this week.

I haven't heard a reason yet but my guess is they weren't pleased by his conditioning. The Pats expect their players to hit the ground running in camp and if Hairston wasn't in shape it probably really stood out. When you're a sixth round pick out of Central Connecticut State you don't have much room for error. It will be interesting to see if they bring in another RB to camp. If not they'll be going into the season with Maroney, Morris, Faulk and Evans being the unit. If Maroney stays healthy I think this unit will be very productive running behind a high-quality line that returns all their starters and key backups. The fact the passing game should be more dangerous (at least on paper it looks that way) should give the RBs more space to work with unlike last year. In 06 safeties like Sanders and Rhodes were able to cheat up (and not get burned) and cause a lot of trouble against the run. This year that will be awfully tough to do with the weapons on the outside the Pats have added.

Maroney's the key though because he's the guy defenses have to account for. If he does what most Patriot fans think he can do he'll be a legit threat while also allowing guys like Morris and Faulk to play their roles (i.e. not asked to do more than they should). If he went down the Pats could survive but they would have to lean more on the passing game (like the 03/04 team with a not too productive Antowain) which hurts your overall balance.

Thanks Boston...I was also wondering what the word was on Garrett Mills? He can also line up at FB, correct? I was looking at the rosters on patriots.com and he is listed at FB.Training camp preview - Running Backs

Last year Mills had a rocky transistion from college to the pros and than got injured. Due to that his rookie year was wasted and he was pretty much the forgotten man going into mini-camps. The word is he opened a few eyes with his performance at mini-camp and has put himself into the mix for a roster spot this year. If he makes it he'll probably do so as a jack-of-all-trades combo of FB/TE/H-Back. While there aren't a lot of open roster spots this year Mills is a guy who's preseason performance will make or break him. He's literally playing for a job (be it with the Pats or someone else). With David Thomas still recovering from his foot injury (and Watson and Kyle Brady being locks) Mills will probably get a little more of an opportunity in preseason to show what he can do. It will be interesting to see what he does with that opportunity.

Seems real reasonable...so what year does he ask for his contract to be redone?!?!? :lmao:

Meriweather's money

By Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff

According to an industry source, Patriots rookie defensive back Brandon Meriweather signed a five-year deal worth $8.75 million with $6 million in bonuses and guarantees. The deal could be worth as much as $11.6 million with escalators and incentives.

Chad Brown already done for the season and placed on IR.
I think you meant Chad Scott. It's truly amazing how injury plagued their secondary has been the last four years. It's one injury after another. Hopefully Randall Gay steps up and takes over the role of the #3 CB (I'm assuming Samuel will be back). On another note Merriweather has been getting a lot of reps at CB and I've heard nothing but positive things about his performance.

Yes, it's Chad Scott. I always get their names backwards . . .

This is obviously a "take it for what it's worth" post but here are a few things I have been hearing from the grapevine:

*Randy Moss looks special. He's really impressing with his talent. Personally I'm bumping him up my draftboard as I think he may really light it up. Brady has never played with a WR like Moss...and Moss has never played with a QB like Brady. If Moss can stay healthy this duo may have a big time season. Last night Paul Perillo was on FSN with Tanguay and Dickerson and almost looked in awe when talking about how Moss looks. That says a lot to me because he's a guy who's opinion I respect and he also tells it like it is.

*Pierre Woods looks to be much improved and is pushing to get some legit snaps at LB this year.

*Merriweather has been taking almost all his snaps at CB and is more than holding his own.

*Gaffney is showing his end of year production was not a fluke and is starting to separate from the pack (i.e. the other WRs trying to earn a roster spot).

*Kelly Washington isn't making too much of an impression and is not helping his chances to make the team.

*LeKevin Smith looks improved over last year and is making a push to become a factor this year.

So far it seems like camp has been very productive as there seems to be a decent amount of good news coming out of Foxboro. Hopefully that continues into the regular season.
