New England vs. San Diego (1 Viewer)

Well, I have to admit that I was really rooting for the Patriots/Colts matchup (See other thread) but we get this instead. Let me state that I'm not a fan of either team, nor do I hate either team: I just want a good game, hopefully a great game. I have my doubts- New England just tore them up early in the year. Rivers, LT, and Gates banged up? Not a good sign.

Still, it doesn't have to be a blowout. The Chargers really surprised me today. If their WRs can continue to play well, if their defensive line can somehow penetrate that iron wall and put some pressure on Brady, then who knows? They got a shot.

I don't care who wins, just want it to entertaining, like today's Charger/Colts game. Lots of drama there.

What do you guys think?

I think it all depends on SDs injuries. If Rivers, Gates, and LT are not healthy it's going to be hard for them to stay in this game for 4 quarters.

Another issue is that the Pats get an extra day of rest and do not have to travel from Indy to SD and then all the way back across the country. This will present a big challenge to the SD coaching staff.

It will be as good a game as the JAX/NE , PHIL/NE, IND/NE, BAL/NE and NYG/NE games have been. San Diego can play. Obviously if Rivers, LT and Gates aren't playing the tide greatly swings in NE's favor...But San Diego has speed and big playmakers on both sides of the ball. It will be a fun one to watch.

SD.............................punch.................................NE.........

...............................MOUF

you guys are slipping.

Volek, Turner, and Nannee will dominate....LOL....

Hope the team can get healthy and make it a good game...

NE 48

SD 12

Games over at the end of the 1st Quarter

BTW- I hate NE.

New England 83

Chargers 0 (they actually lose points during the game but manage to kick a late FG to bring them back to even)

One of the trends in the NFL has been that for many franchises that go on a multiyear "run" at a ring, their "best" team flops, and its one of the unheralded editions of that team that go on a huge playoff run.

The Steelers' best was a 15-1 team in 2004 and had HFA. They had HFA in 2001 with a 13-3 team. Both flopped in the playoffs. It was the unheralded 11-5 wild card that went to the Super Bowl.
The Colts best team was their 2005 team, but they flopped in their first game. They even looked strong in 2007 but flopped to the Chargers. It was the relatively unheralded 2006 team that went on the road to beat the Ravens, then escaped the Patriots to win it all.
The Chargers went 14-2 in 2006, but flopped in their first game. Its the 2007 Chargers, again unheralded, that is now 2-0 in the postseason and quietly sits in the AFC title game right now. This might all be random chance but it is interesting.

... and that's where you lost me.Has this NE team followed ANY NFL trend to date? This is a special Patriot team and I thought SD had a shot in IND but I don't think they match up well with NE at all. But I don't think any nfl team matches up well with NE to be honest. Present or past.

Like I said I'm not sure its anything more than random chance. Its just interesting to see that several teams as of late have followed a similar pattern.

I think it's indicative of the steps you take as a successful team. Sometimes teams can completely break out and win it all without having a few years of playoff experience leading up to it, but I think most of the time it takes a few years of playoff experience and competition at a high level to get a team to the point to which they can win a championship. The way they handled adversity all season and these three playoff games this year for the Chargers are very important building blocks towards long term success - even if they get spanked next week against the Pats (and I think they will), it's a valuable learning experience which will pay off big in years to come - maybe even next year.

Part of it might just be that Cowher, Schottenheimer, and Dungy all had reptuations for being playoff chokers. For Cowher and Dungy, they each had that one "oddball" year where that wasn't the case. Dungy may have slipped back into that mold.

I'm not even conceding they have NO CHANCE against NE, just that this game is a lot more like people were representing the IND game... they'll need a lot of TO's(the reason they got this far is because they've gotten a lot of TO's over the course of the season so I don't know why people act like it's very unlikely to happen) and they'll really have to curtail the penalties. In this game everything has to go just right... I never thought that was the case in IND.

Based on ONE GAME? I think it's more to do with the fact too many people were taking SD lightly in that game than IND playing worse than expected. SD, a 3-4 team that makes a living off of creating TO's and has a history of playing IND close... I still can't figure out why they were that big of underdogs in the first place.

Dungy has choked a LOT in the playoffs. If you ignore what happened last year, then you look at see his Colts gag when both Rivers and LT were out of the game, it starts to make sense to just dismiss last year as an aberration and put the "choke monkey" on Dungy's back again.

San Diego did a marvelous job today stopping the Colts when they had to in the 4th quarter. No one has stopped the Patriots in the 4th quarter all year. But there are some hopeful signs. First, whether it's Tomlinson or Turner, the Pats have been weak lately at stopping the run. This bodes well for SD, especially if they can keep it close. More importantly, can Merriman, Phillips, et al get in Brady's face at least some of the time without having to committ the safeties? It seems to me this is the only way anyone is going to beat New England this year: by being able to prenetrate without blitzing. No one has been able to do this with any consistency. If the Chargers can, then I think they've got a shot.

Hopefully for the Chargers the game won't be decided by a field goal, because Kaeding seems to have a hard time making those kicks in the playoffs.

Tell it to Jacksonville.
