New IR rule? (1 Viewer)

Could someone please explain what the difference in this new rule is vs the Pup list?

Sorry if this is explained somewhere else. I will delete if so.

New NFL IR rules

1. Only players with a "major injury" who are placed on Reserve/Injured after 4:00 p.m., New York time, on Tuesday, September 4, or thereafter during the season, will be eligible to be reactivated at a later time.

2. A "major injury" is defined as an injury that renders the player unable to practice or play football for at least six weeks (42 calendar days) from the date of injury.

3. Each team may reactivate only one player placed on Reserve/Injured after 4:00 p.m., New York time, on Tuesday, September 4. That player must be "designated for return" at the time the club places him on Reserve/Injured, and such designation shall appear on that day's Personnel Notice.

4. Such player is eligible to return to practice if he has been on Reserve/Injured for at least six weeks from the date he is placed on Reserve. He is eligible to return to the Active List if he has been on Reserve/Injured for at least eight weeks from the date he is placed on Reserve.
NFL PUP list

Physically Unable to Perform - Players on the regular season PUP list are eligible to return to action after Week 6. At that point, they can begin practicing with the team, and the team has a three-week window to activate that player or send him to injured reserve. To be eligible for the PUP list, a player must have been on the preseason PUP list and not practicing with his team.

That also means they have to be on the 53 man roster before going on this IR. Players that are on IR now can't come back to play this year for the team that put them on IR.

Yes, the essential difference is, PUP has to be declared before the season begins. The new IR designation can only be used on a player put on IR after the season begins. And they have to be designated at the time they go on IR as being this special case.

The first real life example of this new rule that impacts fantasy is probably Vincent Brown as the Chargers plan to IR him and bring him back later in the season. You should be able to put Brown on IR (if you have IR settings) in your fantasy league week 1 and then activate him mid season like a baseball disabled list. This is potentially a pretty significant rule for fantasy as a guy like Brown would no longer be dead weight, but a very valuable stash that you could replace while he's out.

This rule change is definitely important for dynasty leagues, or any league with tight rosters. Crossing my fingers that Terrell Suggs gets placed on IR so he won't use up a valuable roster spot on my dynasty team.

don't hold your breath on Suggs

I think the Ravens screwed up and already PUPd him even though they knew the rule was gonna be implemented

Actually, they would still be eligible, I believe. There's another thread here: http://forums.footba...howtopic=652970 with a couple posters that pointed out that players who were on IR before this rule was put in place will be exempt so they can be eligible. It'd just be for this year so some teams wouldn't get screwed if they had to put a player on IR before Sept 4th.

*Edited* to add the link in the post about the exemption - http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/post/_/id/45571/take-two-desmond-bishop-could-be-eligible

I dont understand why brown would go on IR and not Pup? Teams should want to save the special IR for a mid season injury, I would think.

Players are ineligible for the PUP List once they participate in training camp practices. The PUP List is designed for guys who are injured before training camp even starts.Besides that, there is a strategic advantage to placing a player on IR instead of the PUP List -- if you put a player on the PUP List, then he has to be activated by Week 10 or else he goes on IR for the rest of the season. But if you put him on IR, then you could activate him in Weeks 11-17 and still get some use out of him.
