New Laptop....what do I need for security...free is good. (1 Viewer)

1st new computer since 1999....golly I'm cheap.  Current laptop is at least 7 years old.   I have no idea what I should download for new one to keep my stuff as safe as possible on the cheap.  What ya got?

Cheap?  You'll like this answer then:  Nothing, Windows does it all for you now days. 

 
A lot have changed since you last bought a laptop, so take a look at what those changed might mean to you (e.g. detachable tablet like screens, optical character recognition) in your use of the tech, and how it might assist in making your life easier (at least the part you spend in front of a screen)

 
come on....really?    So no need for McAffe or Norton types?   Sounds too good to be true.
Stay as far away from McAffe and Norton as you possibly can.  Avast and AVG are ok, but, no longer needed.  I used AVG for years before Windows 8 came out and I'm glad I don't have to keep updating the free version and keep getting prompts to upgrade etc.  Windows 8 and 10 have Windows Defender and Windows Firewall by default and they are more than enough and work just fine.
