Seems like this OT format will eventually be scrapped, because it's lame.

Does anyone have valid ideas?

The two that come to mind :

1. Play an extra FULL QUARTER of football. (Playoffs only)

2. College overtime rules. (Regular Season)

 
A full quarter isn't necessary. 8 minutes seems sufficient.

Use the same system for regular season and playoffs. Two completely different formats would be ridiculous.

 
I think a lot of time went into the new rules and don't see them being scrapped anytime soon. Not sure why you think they will be. They're not perfect but probably about the best they can do.

I can't think of many things less likely than the NFL adopting the college OT rules.

 
Alternate kicking 25 yard FG's, every player on team kicks one. Start with the O Linemen.

Teams always get a chance to answer, so the game isn't over until one team scores then stops the other team from scoring on their next possession. No PATs have to go for 2 on a TD.

 
Ball at the 50, both teams lined up across their own goalline. At the whistle they run for the ball. Team who gets the ball over the other team's goalline wins. No other rules other than personal fouls apply. No downs, no clock, no offsides, forward pass to your heart's content. Just a war for the ball.

I'd be fine with the college way, with a twist: both teams get one possession, and then if it's still tied, it goes to the college way, except change it to where it's like hockey's shootouts...none of the stats count after each team has had a possession in OT. I hate seeing 17-17 games in college turn out to be 45-43 finals.

 
Give both teams a chance on offense regardless of what the other team does, unless there is a defensive score/turnover then it goes to sudden death.

No time runs off the clock on the each teams 1st offensive possession unless there is a turnover,

If each team has had the ball then the clock starts and it goes to sudden death.

 
My rules for OT --

1. Teams start at the 50, no kickoff. This way team must move the ball to get into FG position.
2. No kicking an EP after a TD. It must be a 2 pt. Conversion.
3. Play until one team doesn't score.

Simple and fair.

I like this. Similar to the college rules, but nice twist on that.

 
My solution is keep the OT as is currently but do a coin flip before the start of the 4th quarter. If it doesn't go it OT great but if it does both teams know their position for the entire 4th quarter and can plan accordingly. So if a team knows they aren't getting the ball to start OT they would be more apt to go for 2 if they score late in the game like GB did.

 
Roshambo for it. Each player lines up face to face at mid field. Those with more left standing takes it.

Give you a hint the NFL wants a TD on every possession, the new rules would have been fine in the 70's and 80's but not in the 10's and 20's...

Care less the Packers lost at this point as OT is what it is right now. Point is was it really the most exciting thing for the NFL? College rules is the way to go with FGs/PATs not being allowed in OT.

 
The problem here is that the way college does it, really is the best way to do it. But college did it first, and the NFL has too much pride to not be a pioneer and simply adopt something from elsewhere.

 
In the regular season, a tie is a tie. If you can't get a win in 60 minutes, you don't deserve one on a fluke.

In post-season, endless 4th quarter. If it's tied after 15 minutes, you just keep going until someone scores.

Who says it's going to be scrapped? I haven't heard anyone on any NFL show say anything even remotely close to what you're saying..

it will never be scrapped, it works perfectly fine, as-is..

look, you have 4 quarters to win a game. if it goes to OT like the Az/GB game, you'd like to think that the GB defense could cover a WR on the backend of a play and NOT let him run 60+ yards on the 3nd play from scrimmage..that's textbook 'things you don't want to do in OT' ..

so ,let's blame the rules is what you're saying? that's :loco: .blame the coaching , blame the players.

GB had how missed tackles on that Fitzgerald OT TD??? 5/6 missed tackles, including the would-be sack of Palmer?? Clay Matthews did a poor job of tackling Fitz downfield, it was a Chris Berman 'WHOOOP' highlight, at best it was a half-hearted effort, he chased him down,took the wrong angle and was toast.but where was the rest of the defense?

GB also needed a hail mary pass just to get to OT..maybe in the future, they go for two points instead of being satisfied with a PAT and tied game???

maybe they hold onto that 13-7 second half lead they had??

 
The college rules suck because it's not "real" football any longer - field position and special teams don't matter in college OT. Someone mentioned college football rules but move it to the 50 - still hate it. Why penalize a team if they have dominant special teams and punter? No kicking in OT? Why penalize a team with a dominant kicker?

I can find something wrong with every suggestion made in this thread - the current rules are fine.

 
I happened to like it better when there was no OT in the regular season. I also liked the sudden death OT in the playoffs. I never bought the unfair angle of not being able to possess the ball. Both teams had 60 minutes to score more points or give up fewer points. Don't like it? Go for two in regulation or try a 60 yard field goal instead of punting.

 
Same rules as now, except instead of a coin flip you let the teams bid on their starting field position, and whoever bids lowest gets the ball. Packers want to make sure Aaron Rodgers gets the ball during overtime? Bid your own ten yard line and it's yours.

 
Both teams get the ball at their own 20 at the same time. Each starting offense and defense is on the field to begin OT. Hurry up drives passing each other on the field like trucks driving in opposite directions on a one lane highway. If one team punts then the other team has two drives going simultaneously, one with the starters, the other with the second string. First team to score a TD wins. Rodgers has the Packers at the 2, they're about to punch it in but oh no! Tolzien is sacked and fumbles at his own 5, it's picked up Marcus Sherels who scores and the Vikings win! But wait! Lacy scores on the other end! Who crossed the goal line first??!! It's been called a Vikings win on the field but Tony Corrente is going under the hood to look at the split screen!

And again, people keep saying this is just about the Packers...but this has been on every national radio show starting the week.

Are they all just Packers fans too?

There are people proposing things in here who are not Packers fans who have said it for a while too.

I don't have much problem with the OT rules...Packers lost and didn't stop them in OT or with 4 minutes left in the game.

That does not mean things can't be tweaked.

This isn't a bad idea either.
