New River Gorge (1 Viewer)

SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
This is that place in WV that they close down one day a year and let people BASE jump off of it.  Always looked like a cool place.  Has anyone ever been?  Is there anything to do there?  Good hiking?

I'm starting to look into some places for some spring weekend getaways.  This is about a 6 1/2 hour drive, so within our radius.  Just not sure exactly what there is to do.  I mean, you look at the bridge and go, "Wow."  That takes about a minute.  Probably need a little more filler to justify a drive that far.

Unless you're gonna jump off, I don't think there's a ton to do there.  Can probably find a t-shirt and a diner, but 6.5 hours is a long way to go for a t-shirt and a diner.

Book a night a The Greenbriar (which, to be fair, will cost a lot more than a t-shirt and greasy meal) and visit the gorge on your way there/home.

Holy crap.  I just saw you can take a walking tour underneath the bridge on the catwalk.  That sounds both fun and terrifying.  I'm terrified of heights.  But you are strapped in.  When I'm strapped in, I tend to feel much better.  But I also get scared standing on a step stool.

I haven't been, but generally familiar with the area (went to school not far away in Lexington, VA) and there's not much around there.  Greenbrier mention is a good call.  Cass Scenic Railroad supposed to be good too.

It's not what you build a trip around, but if you're white water rafting, golfing, hiking then it's worth an afternoon.

A couple of places not to far from there that we think are cool and have been back multiple times.

1. Lewisburg, WV - voted “coolest small town in America” or something like that. Good restaurants, not far from Greenbrier Resort, has a cool little theater (plays).

2. Staunton, VA - good restaurants, lots of Civil War history, Blackfriars Playhouse (very cool!).

Sheik, I was there for bridge day about 4 years ago. Very crowded, once will be enough for that. Same day we left there and toured a real ghost town, Thurman WV.  It was pretty interesting.

You get strapped in a lot, do you?

So to be clear, we wouldn't go for Bridge Day.  We like to hike and do outdoorsy stuff.  But there's more estrogen than testosterone, so "we" also like to shop and go to kitschy type stores. 60/40.  I know of the Greenbriar, but what's to do there?  High end resort but what's the point of going?

Also, I showed the video of the people walking the catwalk of the bridge to my wife and she said, "#### that!"    Which might be for the best, because after I saw the video I was hoping someone else would be afraid so I could pretend I would've done it.  Not sure if I could.  I thought you'd be walking on a wide platform, but that catwalk is about 2 feet wide.

Wise choice good buddy!

wonder if you could work in a trip to the Gauley while you are there?
We went white water rafting up in Jim Thorpe and while it was fun, my wife, female cousin and daughter were surprised that we were going to have to paddle so much.  About 20 minutes into our 6 hour trip, I realized I was the only one paddling for our boat.  We'd be going down a set of rapids, bouncing off rocks, while I was furiously paddling to keep us from flipping.  Meanwhile these three were holding a conversation and only stopping to tell me the boat was facing the wrong direction.  The next day I could barely move I was so sore.  And they kept saying, "You must be out of shape because none of us are sore."

I think I'll pass on white water rafting with them again.

Jim Thorpe's a cool river town. Great old, small opera house that's been refurbished and has music 3-4 nights a week and good bartenders. Several decent restaurants and bars. We go the weekend before (or of) Halloween each year for the Halloween burlesque show at the opera house. Great fun.

We usually go there once a year.  My cousin has a mountain house about 20 minutes from there, so we'll go up for the weekend and do fun stuff in the Poconos.

My recommendation for a cool thing to do in WV is a summer-weekend at the Big Bend Campground located in the Smoke Hole Canyon of the Monongahela Forest. The campground itself is situated on the inside of an oxbow on the Potomac River. And here's what makes it so awesome. You can literally walk to the entrance of the campground, hop into the river with a tube/kayak, and 45 minutes later, you end up on the other side of the road. No transportation necessary! It's a nice, easy, scenic float. There are several swimming holes and even a rope-swing along the way. Everyone was super-friendly. Go at your own pace, re-fill your drink at the campground, and do it again!

Crazy to go off that bridge.  It doesn't look like much until you stand on it.  The drop is forever.  The side pictures don't show it.  And it's not clear landing.  Always foggy and lots of rocks.

Better to raft the upper and lower Gauley River.  Very close by.  Easily the best WW rafting trip I've been on.  The upper is brutal.  Don't take kids for sure.
