It's not an 'official' FBG-Unc game, but after you won on the large US map, you went on vacation and the rest of us played a rematch: http://warlight.net/MultiPlayer.aspx?GameID=1073837

That game was fun, but I'll never play that map again.

Looks like bf is flexing his 1v1 muscles on the ladder.
... says the guy who wants you to look at the rankings and see him third overall at warlight...
Not really, I've already stated that I'm only in the top 10 due to getting an early start. I had already started to drop rank as more joined until Fizzer put in the provisional 'unranked' period. I'm now only 3rd because only 18 have finished 10 games. There are 9 'unranked' that are already ahead of me in points. As soon as they reach 10 games (you and guderian included), I'll drop my overall rank pretty fast. This really wasn't intended to be a 'look at me' moment. It was meant to be a 'look at bostonfred', it suits you better.

Oops, just now an update. I'm now only 5th of 21 with 7 unranked ahead of me in points. Including fred, who's #3 in total points.

I suck at these ladder games.
Me too. I've been getting killed regularly.I find myself getting engaged in battle too early, and somehow wasting all my resources in the battle while my opponent holds me off while still building bonuses.Although my games have been getting better since I started writing down where all the wastelands are - that made me better able to decide where to go after the first few turns and anticipate where my opponent started and where we'd meet.

Keeping a notebook is great idea :goodposting: , but do you know that you can go back into history to look at the first turn (territory selection) to check wastelands, starting positions, etc?

If you guys wouldn't mind, please blacklist this little #####: http://warlight.net/MultiPlayer.aspx?GameID=1218329
That tourney is ridiculous with a 5 minute boot timer. fatguy and I convinced another team of booters to play a honorable game in round 2. Funny that it was never even a question when we played Steelerbill and his team mate. Since his game is waiting on ours, if we advance, I'm going to try to make sure I'm around at the end of our game. Maybe I'll boot him at his own game.

I was travelling all day today. The little turd force-joined me, then booted me.

I spoke too soon. Fred is now #1 in total points, but not yet ranked.
I'm sure Fred will be near the top, but provisional ratings are ridiculous. I went down 50 points for winning a game against the 7th ranked player, then went up over 100 for losing to Pinkbladder.

Not sure why anyone would create a tournament with a 5 minute boot time. I don't even consider the boot times on tournaments. Our first game went fine with no booting. Didn't even have to ask. Seems like a waste to boot someone out of the gate. What exactly are you looking for if you just want to win games by booting people?

I did know that but I guess I was too impatient to use that tool. Maybe I should just say I've been doing slightly better since making an effort to be more deliberate.I still suck though, just slower.

I thought you played really well against me. Fred and I have played like a zillion 1v1 games against each other on Medium Earth with wastelands, so I think that helps us a lot. The more you play the better you get. The quality of ladder opponents is high right now. I think a lot of the top players have signed up but not that many pushovers. I don't know if it will stay that way or if the weaker players will start jumping in. Gotta say I'm loving the whole ladder concept.

I don't have my Drogan's decoder ring handy. I know the people in this thread better by their Warlight names than their FBG names... which Warlight guy are you?

I didn't realize West Africa had a wasteland: http://warlight.net/MultiPlayer.aspx?GameID=1220083
See that's where my "writing it down" method could have come in handy
True, but I selected it as a starting location, so I wouldn't have realized it to even write it down. ;) Strategically, it worked well for me.
I know, I was kidding about how stupid my "method" was.One thing I noticed from reviewing that game, a few others of yours, and a few others of Fred's, is that on the 1 on 1 games you guys pick some spread out starting points rather than having them all bunched together. I'd been going with picking all together like seems to work in team games - for maximizing bonus growth early.

How do you guys see 1 on 1 games playing out differently with those two different starting ideas? Is it different in team vs. 1 on 1 games?

My bad, I was assuming you didn't watch the game. I totally missed the joke. :) Regarding spreading out, it's definitely different in team vs. 1 on 1, or even 1 on 1 vs. FFA. But it also depends on the map.

Playing FBGs on the Europe map taught me to select several territories next to each other, to help with quick growth in one location. But that map allows ease of growth after the first region is conquered and is larger, which reduces the chances of running into your opponent right away.

On the Middle Earth map, if you sell out to finish one bonus quickly, you risk two things. First, you probably don't have as easy growth on turn 2, 3 and 4 in other territories, because your armies are out of position (I've found it works better to finish 2-3 bonuses by turn 2-3, vs. 1 bonus on turn 1 - see this game of bostonfred's as an example: http://warlight.net/MultiPlayer.aspx?GameID=1221135 ). Secondly, and more importantly, if your opponent has even 1 of his starting spots near yours, you end up fighting for your whole game, while they are risking just 1 starting spot. It's hard to dedicate any armies to continued growth because you need them for defense of the entire game, plus if you complete a region, it may immediately be at risk because it's attached to your core income.

:goodposting: i'll have to try this out and see if my luck can changeETA: 1-0 with the new strategy :hifive:

I've been enjoying WarLight since last summer, but my recent trip to Gettysburg has me wondering about games with a little more strategy involved (infantry, cavalry, artillery, effects of terrain, etc). Is there anything like this out there? I still much prefer turn-based games though, rather than real-time (which is just silly).

The site just implemented a referral program.

For 3 referrals, you get a free lifetime membership.

If you are interested in checking out Warlight, and are going to create an account (an account is not a membership),

please let me know first so I can get credit for the referral!!!

Yeah, I'd be kind of pissed if I had already paid for a membership. 3 referrals is nothing, and I know Dragons and some of the other guys would have already had wayyyyy more than 3...

Just read that the 3 referrals have to become members. So basically, if I can get 3 people to buy memberships, mine is free.Cool.

Also just saw that the offer is retroactive, as long as referrals were involved, 3 = free!

I think he's being too generous there.

I'll let him know - I'm in a 1v1 with him right now. Unfortunately, he's the same crap brown color that I use, which never happens. It's confusing me.

Only one of the people I turned on to the game actually used the link (whaler) and he isn't a member yet. But, I figure the membership fee was more of a thank you for the hours of entertainment I've already received, so I'm not that bothered by it.I hate to mention it, but Addai's Adidas would be the king of referrals if he used the referral link in the first post of this thread.

Huh?
I think Fizzer is being too generous to give so much money for referrals.I'm playing Fizzer in a game right now. I'll mention it to him.In said game, he's the same color I always use. It's very rare for anyone else to be the brown color, so on the rare occasions when someone else is brown, I get confused, thinking I'm the brown guy.

I don't think there was a referral link when I posted it. I'm still not a member though. Too cheap. Who wants to buy me one?
