New to dynasty (1 Viewer)

Tommorow is my first dynasty draft and I'm a little split on how to draft. Do you go for youth or do you go for instant production. I'm sure youthful production is the best case scenario but there are only some many Larry Fitz and LJ's to go around. Does anyone have a copy of a dynasty draft that they were in this year that I could use for reference or a dynasty cheatsheat. Anything at this point would be helpful. The league is 12 man by the way.

I tend to draft younger, and avoid older players. But you can't draft TOO young unless you don't mind throwing the towel in your first year.

The following are 3 links to new 12 team dynasty leagues that drafted between July and this month. 1 pt per reception league. The middle link is the most recent, and should be the most helpful!

These are highly competitve leagues over at Ants( which cscmtp and myself are in). And use the middle one as a good litmus for where players are falling now. It was also a live draft (Snooze u Lose 7)

The other 2 were early drafts which also were great drafts but you can see how some players have moved up and down with the pre-season and injuires, rumors, etc etc.

It really is up to you and what you prefer. I'll say that it's nice to have young studs, of course, but many will overvalue youth and it's possible potential. If you want to shoot out the gates, get your core guys early and then pounce on the veterans while others are going for more shakey young potential. If you are having a rookie draft too, then remember where you are picking in that....thus, high pick could be Bush, Maroney and such. There is no golden way of doing it, it's all about how you want your team. Just remember that's much easier to pull a veteran WR than a young RB for instance. If IDP is involved, stay away from drafting defense until later...you'll be tempted because others are doing it, but don't...just keep draft offense..even if it's your 5th WR. Defense fill-in's are ALWAYS easier to find, especially in the beginning of a dynasty league.Good luck!!!

Get your kickers early, they go fast. And don't worry about running backs, you can always trade for one later. Oh, and Manning retired. Both of them. Stay away from Houshmadilly-Whosyurmama cuz it's too hard to spell.

Alternative plan would be to corner the market on Titans, Jets, and Broncos RBs so you're covered. Then after you've used those 15 draft picks...

My way of drafting is simple.

My first 5-6 Rounds I am drafting the best players I can and that have at least a 2 year shelf life. I would never reach on an unproven rookie back unless I know he is the week one starter that season or is a can't miss player. But even then can't miss can miss as we are finding out (Cedric Benson).

WR's are players who generaly age much better than every other position. Don't worry about taking Marvin Harrison or Derrick Mason. They can be realiable guy's for you for the next 2-3 years.

You can always find value in other rookie backs who do not have the draft status that others have. And your not spending early picks on them. For example, Jerome Harrison, Brian Calhoun, and Maurice Drew.

Remember horde the talent not the potential. The first 2-3 years I rather win and still build through the drafts and also trading ( if it is a great league) which will be a year round event.

Dynasty Leagues are the best hands down.

Jeff's Dynasty Thread

There is alot of good stuff here.

Older WR's tend to fall, and offer great value. Also if its a brand new league, maybe see what people are willing to give for your 2007 1st rounder. People in new dynasty drafts may overvalue that pick, and you can wind up with another top player.

Get as many solid, quality, valuable RBs as possible. You can always trade an RB to upgrade another position.

We have expert dynasty rankings (including IDP) here for subscribers.

here is a free set of rankings that were current as of mid-July.

In a 12 team league you have more freedom to mix youth and proven older producers. I don't subscribe to the "win now" or "build for the future" strategy. I think you can do both. I would focus on youth at RB, but you should probably grab two of three of the grizzled vets (guys like Horn, Galloway, Muhammad, Bruce, Glenn, Kennison) at WR, and follow them up with high upside WR picks later that may not contribute much this year (Drew Carter, Vincent Jackson, Brandon Marshall, Greg Jennings) but have bright futures

Do not, I repeat, do not, miss out on drafting Michael Turner, RB, SD - he is a stud in the making, even if you dont get to reap the benefits until 2008. He is THE MOST UNDERVALUED player in initial dynasty drafts right now.

I go by the notion of young RBs and veteran WRs in the early-mid rounds. The value in many initial dynasty drafts are young RBs like Turner (per Bloom), MBarber, etc, and vet WRs like Mason and Driver, etc.

:goodposting: You are making me proud of my big money [DYNASTY] ppr league!... (same 12 owners since inception in '99)

QB (1): Palmer

RB (1/2): Portis / James / White / Turner

WR (2/3): Burress / Driver / Mason / Houshmandzadeh / Jennings / VJackson

TE (0/1): Heap / Watson

(+K +IDP)

I know, not a "rate my team thread" - just a way of showing a good mix of "grizzled vets" and "upside youngster" - in my opinion...

Try to win now, worry about the future in the future.
You usually can draft to do this. I noticed owners will draft young players before solid vets. If you draft like it is a redraft and add some young talent thru the rookie draft you will have a competitive team the first 2 or 3 years.

Do both, as you've said. Yes, there are few superstuds, and they're all in their prime.Draft to win, and worry about next year next year.Cheatsheets for dynasty? I've never found any. I've actually never been in an initial dynasty draft, as I took over my team in 2001.

If you have a very strong feeling about a player, take him. There is nothing worse than passing on a player you had a strong feeling about; that player exploding and you either have to go trade for him or he becomes unavailable via trade due to his talent. If your gut and all of your football acumen have collided and the results of the explosion tell you to draft a certain player, then take him. It is the allure of the dynasty format and not giving into that from time to time is a mistake.

Even if ADP data says otherwise you need to trust your gut or instincts from time to time in a dynasty format.
