I can certainly appreciate the voice but even my wife who is a big fan had no interest in seeing her in concert. Doesn't she just stand there and sing? Is there anything that's a "show" about it?

I expect a group of depressing songs as women sit there and cry.

It's legit. You'll know as soon as you walk in. There might not be a sign but you order sandwiches towards the front. Towards the back is where they have the big trays of stewed oxtail and other random meats.

I've mentioned it probably 10x in this thread so apologies to the OGs.
Ok we'll do it tomorrow. I'm always in for some oxtail.

The explosion thread is turning into the usual nonsense, so I'll post this here. ..

Kids' school was alerted by NYPD today of a suspicious package in the hood (26th, so not that close). School went on immediate "shelter in"... all kids brought inside, all doors locked, nobody in or out until alerted to do so.

9yo floppinho was at recess playing soccer on the roof with his class... teacher screamed for everybody to get inside NOW. Which they did,  but we're understandably freaked. I asked Jr if he was scared... said that the girl he had a crush on was,  and that she hugged him tight. That was all he remembered about the experience.

We all remember our first terror scare affection.

Del Friscos fantastic as usual. Actually tried the onion rings on a recommendation, they were pretty good. Def the better part of the night.

Adele, meh - don't get me wrong, amazing voice and supremely talented, just not my cup of tea. She also talks for about 1/2 of the show and sings the other half. Kids woke up as we walked through the door, couldn't even get a reward :kicksrock:

Sounds like floppinho has been reading our GB @Nathan R. Jessep.

oh come now... I'm not an adele fan, but I can appreciate she's got a great voice- should be a fantastic night.
Every song is going to be "there goes $250".

I'm just noticing for the first time all of the dump trucks filled with sand surrounding the UN dignitary hotels. The Plaza is completely encircled.  Rolling car bomb barrier I guess?

How was the Flying Puck?
We really liked it but couldn't get a table so we only had a few beers and left. Ended up watching at a bar next to the hotel that was pretty blah.

Hoping to try the Cuban place tomorrow. Went to Best Bagels for lunch today and that place is awesome.

Less than 2 weeks away for our trip for Columbus Day weekend (sat thru wed).  Great info in this thread - thanks!  I'm traveling with wife and 2 girls (8 and 10).  We'll be tourists on this trip and I've been to NYC multiple times, so we have a general idea of what to do but it's mostly the usual tourist beats and we're go with the flow type travelers.  We're staying in hotel near Korea-town.

What tix should we buy ahead of time? Ellis Island/ SOL? Broadway?

What things would be better on the Tuesday/ Wed when tourist crowds are less (besides everything)?

Any recs on cook-your-own Korean BBQ?  Bagels near Mid-town East/Flatiron?

I'm not huge on going to every high-rise lookout deck.  I've never even been to Sears Tower in my hometown. Are there rooftop bars that would be good around sunset time that we could pretend to look cool for a minute while knowing that the real crowd will be there hours after us?  If not, is Top of the Rock or ESB worth getting tix ahead?

Speaking of Oysters, if anyone is looking for a half day/day trip that can use transit, check out OYSTER FEST in Oyster Bay. Billed as the largest waterfront festival on the east coast and you can take the LIRR right there from both Penn and Brooklyn. Its a two day event, weekend of the 13-14.

A little shocked at now nonchalant the people walking around look.  At least there doesn't appear to be people injured in that picture.  I'm sure some are hurt, but hopefully not that many.
Don't think we're gonna be so lucky unfortunately. Think it was NBC reporting possibility of mass casualties. Search and rescue taking place for people possibly trapped.

Just talked to a co-worker who's husband was on the train right behind that one.  He's off the train and now trying to find a way back home.

ETA - As per her husband, the train crashed into the station itself.  He said the Dunkin Doughnuts in the station is basically gone.  Can't imagine there wouldn't be injuries...a Dunkin on a subway platform at 8:30 AM...

Yeah it broke through whatever that "barrier" is, broke through a wall, and into a station. People on Twitter who were on the train say it was going basically full speed.

How the heck does that happen?  I feel like they've got to have auto-braking.  I mean, we can make a car that can stop itself, why not a train?

We've answered this question before... money.  That's it.  Technology exists, the governing authorities have to spend it.

It's another sad example of our huge infrastructure issue. Once again, the boomer generation selfishly took everything and screwed the future.  We are talking 3+ decades of deferred maintenance, no investment, minimal upgrades.  Sadly, even with tragedies such as this and Metro North not long ago we don't seem to care enough as an electorate to hold our leadership accountable.

This is just awful - I'm wathching on news 12 right now, gotta be some sad stories to come.

This is, I believe, 4 train crashes in the last handful of years that would have been prevented by automatic braking. There is no excuse not to come up with the money for that.

ETA, for example, Amtrak is about to launch new Acela trains.  That is a huge waste of money when the tracks can't support the max speeds and are dangerous as the are.  Priorities.

Agreed.

Or for the crumbling bridges.

Or quite literally a federally subsidized road system that prioritizes speed (auto throughput) over everything else... including and especially safety.  There's an example of an epidemic that results in over 30,000 FATAL crashes a year, yet we continue not to fund simply solutions, and worse yet, continue to legislate dangerous solutions that are no longer rooted in any logic nor reason (just an engrained set of "this is how we (the Dept of Transportation) have always done it"

So yes, on one hand it's an unwillingness to invest. On the other, it's the lack of inertia at state and federal levels to look at new and smarter ways to invest that would both save money and, more importantly, lives.

:goodposting: I have been encouraged on the bridge front, at least around the city.  There are multiple major bridge replacements right now.  It's a start at least.

Guy being interviewed on ABC is a train engineer who was at the station just casually mentions stepping over a dead body.

Does this appear to be an accident as opposed to any sort of malicious act or is it too soon to tell?

I come thru that terminal about a dozen times per month ... always walk right down that indoor corridor where this took place (past the Dunkin Donuts adjacent to the Newstand, and the NJ Transit waiting area/bathrooms) ... and those trains come in at a snail's pace, as if they're being pushed from behind - any more than 5 mph would shock the #### outta me-  so how this particular line had enough speed/momentum to crash through is mind boggling, just defies any logic
