Probably one of the (very few) good things about living in Staten Island. The public schools here (especially the south shore) are pretty good.

sorry to hear all of this, good brooklyn people. our school rocks. and tbh, I haven't heard a complaint from any of our friends- even in gen ed schools in district 1 in the evil.

non-school talk...

anybody using mealpal? been on it for the last two months- totally enjoying it. save a couple bucks and get to branch out from my usual two or three standard lucnh options.

f my kids will be in private school come fall.  It's blood money, but I can't deal with the public ed game in this town.  Even if we "win" the public ed game, in Brooklyn the prize is substandard.
PS 8, 29, 58, and to a lesser extent 261 are all good schools.

2 kids in private? Do you #### gold? Unless it is a religious school, I don't see how that isn't $60k a year at a minimum.

Honestly, for elementary level kids, prob $70k minimum a year
way over 80 for manhattan. I'm hearing about 50k/year schools...

given the PS vs private... it's NUTS how poor I feel at our public school. feel like the entire school- outside of the kids coming from the projects- own their apartment in the city and have a second home outside... plus multiple cars.

Brooklyn Heights Montessori is nearing about $40k, big discount for the second sibling of about $1500.

Brooklyn Friends is about $47k

Packer in the $40's

St Anne's, good luck getting in. Well good luck getting in to any of them TBH.

PS 29 expects each parent to contribute at least $1k in fundraising. They raised over $1.5MM last year on fundraisers.

This is K-5, pretty ####### nuts.

whoa... our school raised over a mil, and I thought that was insane. 1.5 is crazy. ours asks for 500/kid.
1/3 of the kids have their own floor in Brownstones. Neighborhood has gotten out of control rich.

Every parent wants to send their kid to 29. Honestly, first year 29 has had a waitlist. I suspect at least 20% of the families in there are there on bull#### addresses.

anybody?

Never heard of it.  They have very little info on their website without first having to sign up.  I would want to know specifics of the restaurants and meals before signing up so it's doubtful I will try it.
check the FAQ... lays it out fairly well. I'm in bryant park area and there are a ton of options.

I get this a lot- tasty, good size and prices out at $12-14 a la carte. Alidoro is on it, Between the Bread, GRK, all of the Fresh and Cos and tons more. that said- a lot of the options don't give you that much for the money (I'm on 12 meals per 30 days... $6.39 +tax per meal) and there are lots of sandwiches on it. But so far I'm digging it a lot- trying new places and saving a couple bucks per meal.

eta: I mention all those restaurants- but you can only get whatever they're offering that day... one mealpal dish per restaurant, no options.

I did check their FAQ.  I just want to see what restaurants participate and it says "To see a list and map of all participating restaurants go to https://mealpal.com and scroll down to the bottom of the page" but when I do that I can't find a list.

I am in Bryant park for now, but looking for a new job.

I will contact them and see if they will provide a list.  I trust you and will look into it because you recommended it and I generally like this kind of thing.

I'll be in NYC for work next week, staying in Midtown.  Never been there during a snowstorm. If it's a heavy snowfall, how well shoveled do they keep the sidewalks? Does it make sense to bring snow boots, or is that overkill?

Sidewalks and especially at the corners are a disaster

Bring boots.   Or buy some.  Seriously. the ones that are waterpoof up to your mid ankles.  TRUST ME!

Otherwise, you will be able to get around and stuff will be open.  bars can be fun during snowstorms.

I'm moving to a new place in April and just set up my gas account. Gas has been included in my rent for the last 8 years. The rep told me my new place in bk (1300sf plus finished basement. Old building with new reno) averages $35-40 a month during warm months and $250-350 during cold months. What?! Is that normal?

1300 square feet, plus basement? What neighborhood in Brooklyn?

I've got slightly smaller than that, but same borough - never had a National Grid bill over like $40.

It's an old wood frame townhouse in Lefferts Gardens. Basement is in addition to the 1300. Full reno couple years ago which theoretically included new insulation. I was there on a couple pretty cold days and didn't feel drafts or cold spots.

I live in a 1300 Sq ft townhouse with finished basement and we do balanced billing. Our bill is $65 a month.

Just saw Wonderland at the Atlantic theater's 20th st theater. It's for kids, live rock musical about Alice. Really fun show- highly recommend for parents and kids and decent prices.

Will be back in the ol' stompin grounds next week. Staying at the ARLO Nomad Mon night, back on the island Tuesday.

Will return the Long Island the last week of April then a few days back in the City first weekend of May (with Seattle in between. Yay, travel)

Hope to catch at least one Mets game

Finally had the mutton at Keens a few weeks ago. Tasted really good but it was a battle prying it from the bone. Glad I tried it but I'll stick with the steak.

tried and true - haven't barehanded a pole/strap/rail in over 20 years - it's a rolling germ wagon, eff that noise

:D

I've been to Keens quite a few times and always order the steak. A bunch of recs on the mutton in this thread prompted me to finally try it.
I think that's how most of New York first tried mutton. :lmao:  I enjoyed it.  Not sure I would ever get it again.  And if I did I wouldn't get it anywhere other than Keens.
