I heard that DeBlasio's 4th of July fireworks solution is to have various fireworks during the week, but he won't tell anyone when and where.  I hope this stupidity isn't true.

Definitely true.  Not sure it's his decision or Macy's, but that's what they are doing.

Haven’t there been fireworks like every night anyway all over?  😂

It's to avoid crowds gathering to ooh and ah. Makes sense, imo...even if the "secret location" thing is silly.

Building just collapsed less than 10 blocks from my apartment.
Hopefully nobody was inside..article I read said it was a gym under construction.

City inspectors have issued three violations against the building’s owners for “structural cracks and (a) bulging exterior masonry wall” since last November, Buildings Department records show.

Flying out tomorrow to spend the month of July in Boise, just as their cases are on the rise.

It's crazy that last time we went, we had to quarantine when we got there and this time it looks like we might have to when we get back to NY.

Stay safe all...good luck NYC!

My first day back in the city.

Ran across the W Burgh bridge a couple times and met friends at the playground on Spring and Mott. Wish more people were wearing masks...seems like it's inevitable this is coming back here. But nice to be home and nice to see people who aren't old and white.

Speaking of inevitable...OC MD has been in full summer mode the last couple weeks. And other than inside stores where they're required, very few masks outside, and not much social distancing either (OC beach has been packed daily). Hasn't hit there yet, but the way things have been tracking in the Carolinas and the way people are behaving in OC, I'd be more surprised if it didn't hit there.

Nobody is wearing masks outdoors anymore. I'd say its close to 5% mask usage outside in Staten Island now. This includes me btw.

I'd say 70-80% in evil, Les and Soho today.

I felt like where we were in MD (ocean pines) was a lot like what I've seen of Staten island...more suburban with houses and far less dense. Masks weren't really worn there much either.. including us... unless we were going to OC or somewhere we knew there'd be more people. But with increased density and more folks walking, congregating and otherwise not social distancing, gotta wear the masks.

Heading out to our friends spot in horse country NJ. Took the m21 bus to the 1 train to Penn station and now sitting on NJ Transit. I'm in an n95 mask, the rest of the family has face shields and regular masks.

Pray for mojo.

Masks are near 100% in my limited observation (RT fm the L to Alphabet City), though a lot of runners have their bandanas down. There’s two old hippies in the 500s of E 11th who are out at 7am every week who never wear masks. I walk by & say hello every Saturday, sometimes we chat for a few. Guess when you’ve gotten through the 70s-early 90s living in ABC this SARS CoV 2 thing is just a big whatever.

Two drug dealers were shot last night across the street from my Brooklyn house.  Jeebus.
Thursday night/Friday morning there were 10 shootings, 14 wounded, 1 fatality. Something like 86 shootings the last two weeks? Year ago it was 26 for the same period. YTD 540, last year it was like 366 through July 1.

On a more positive note rents keep dropping.

Been back in NYC this week and seems like masks are still worn very regularly.   Would say outside the rate of wearing is down a bit but still pretty good.

Also, did my regular check-up today and got an anti-body test done.   We shall see how it came out.   Had a bad cough/cold in early feb that I caught from my son but doubt it was Covid but honestly who knows.  We shall see...

Anecdotally noticing less mask wearing at my favorite Italian spot in the Bronx.  Not at the restaurant but the surrounding area

In my office today, first time since March 12th.  Feels a little strange and I needed to get a few things (including a new work laptop) but don't imagine being back until September at earliest.  My office is fairly large with probably close to 750 people working here (takes up numerous floors of the building we are in).  I would estimate total number of folks here at 30.  Wall street area is also totally dead.  NY is still doing this distancing thing when it comes to working for a lot of folks.

Live from Trump Tower: "Black Lives Matter" mural being painted.
we wanted to help with that... damn.

without knowing about the mural, we tried to go to the rockaways via the ferry this morning. got down there, saw the line, turned around and came right back. people at the front had already been waiting an hour, with another half hour to go before the next ferry.

back a week. what I've seen in NYC so far (I"ve run through most of lower manhattan, and took floppinho up to central park to meet a friend)... 95-98% of people have masks. about 20-30% aren't wearing them over the nose and mouth- either under their nose or under their chin. we've taken the subway a couple times- not too crowded at the random times we've taken it (not rush hour), but each time there's been at least one person completely without a mask.

I've been running almost daily. the numbers are about the same in terms of masks on runners, except more than half of the people aren't wearing them on their faces at all- and not even trying to pull them up when they run by other people (which is what I've been doing).

hopefully what I'm seeing is enough to keep the virus at bay...

I know we have bigger problems but JFC has it been three straight weeks now with the heat and humidity making it feel like it's 95+?

Looks like a bit of a break today only because we're about to get pummeled with rain.

Been unbearable to be outside.

We all went for a walk on the east River, where I usually run.

I started counting runners and those running with masks....between 1/9 & 1/10 were running with a mask over their mouth the way I do (completely covering the nose and mouth- at least while running near people). Very disappointing.

Higher percentage of walkers wearing masks.

Just got back. Feels so weird. Energy just zapped out. Can't imagine what the fall/winter will be like when outdoor eating isn't possible. Looking at apartments, seems like a bloodbath out there. Good for renters but I'm surprised they're not giving places away. I mean who'd want to rent a pre-war small apartment with no windows or AC?

But so what are the rules exactly? Are we supposed to wear masks at all times? Where I was, masks were more for when you couldn't social distance. Obviously there is less walking in the suburbs but if I'm walking on an empty street, I'm also supposed to wear a mask? If that is the rule, then I see no chance bars, restaurants, gyms open in 2020 which also makes me think I'm better off just leaving.

Wear a mask if you can't social distance.  Even on an empty block you're bound to come face to face with a hobo or a cop who isn't wearing one.

I just went to get lunch.  No cops wearing.  Infuriating.  Also, this virus has been apocalyptic for sundress season.

I think the official mandate is to wear a mask indoors and outdoors when you can't physically distance. When we walk around Queens, we don't wear masks but we also don't walk where there are any large amounts of people. I don't have a problem passing by an occasional person but will mask up near parks or main avenues where there are a lot of people. Walking in Manhattan, I would probably keep it on full time. We can walk for an hour in Queens and pass maybe a half dozen people by choosing quieter blocks and either walking in the street or crossing the street when someone is coming towards us.

What's probably crazy is that I'll give a wider berth to someone wearing a mask than someone without one. It just feels a little more respectful to a mask wearer and I feel that someone without a mask is on the same page as me as far as being concerned.

yeah... we're keeping our masks on when walking around the hood (EVil/LES) unless there's obviously nobody around.

as mentioned, I'm only seeing 1/10 or so runners bothering. frustrating, considering they're breathing hard and the 6' probably isn't far enough.

and as mentioned, a decent percentage of people wearing masks are wearing them under their chins or noses even when pressed closer to people... why bother?

eta:... oh... have had a couple of people approach me on the sidewalk to ask me a question- and pull their ####### mask down to ask. I can hear you with your mask on, moron.

I guess this is my frustration with it. It kinda feels like temperature checks. Well more effective than that but it seems like it's more for trying to normalize it for the folks who should be wearing them. As you say, runners are likely a higher risk population of spreading it than someone walking outside. And people taking it off to talk with you, that is the whole point of the mask. Talking and running and heavy breathing are way more dangerous than someone taking a walk. Heck, I mean all the outdoor eating seems way more dangerous when you realize folks are out and about with non-family and non-roommates. It's probably not the hill to die on and I'll wear my mask out of respect but everything I've read about the spread, I'm not super worried about some non-compliance wearing a mask out in public. Not that it's the time to get lazy but I'm way more concerned about the fall/winter and opening things back up like schools. I think the numbers have borne that out for the most part although maybe it's too early to tell. But the fall/winter when we're going to rely on a bunch of 8-14 year olds to wear their mask in school? Inside when it's dry because of heat?

For me, we try to bring it down as close to zero as possible now by maintaining our vigilance, with the goal and reality of lots of kids being back in school (and public transportation) in the fall.

If people start slacking now (already are based on what I'm seeing downtown), the numbers will go up for the fall and make it that much more likely it exploded again. Or that's my thinking, at least.

ETA...masks and social distancing- it's worked in other countries and seems such an easy thing to do.

And btw...now, more than ever- just stay to the right.

People walking down the middle of the sidewalk at this point...ugh. usually the same oblivious or intentionally assholish people walking without masks...because #### everybody else.

Fair. I guess my point being we're super vigilant about some things but not vigilant about other things. Contact tracing seems way more important than taking temperatures of folks. Wearing a mask in public can't hurt but again, if this virus travels that easily, then it won't matter where we are at in the fall, the city will close again in a month once kids go back and offices reopen a bit.

I believe in a lot of European countries, they've reopened dining rooms and relaxed things more than NYC. I know NYC was hit hard but I also don't think seeing what happens in TX is going to happen here. I remember hearing on the news that they're reducing restaurant capacity from 100% in some of those places. Why they were at 100% to begin with? I don't know. I just feel like now is a great time to see what is going to happen. Half the city is gone for the summer. Most will eat outside so why not try 20% indoor dining capacity and see what happens? I just don't really know what is going to change in a month or two's time?

I don't disagree that people are stupid and they could ruin it for the rest of us. But based off what is happening in some places, I do think you can reopen more but in a cautious manner. If things get bad, well then close it down again and they'd likely would've gotten bad in the fall. If not, it shows that we can be smart about it. I think when people's businesses are at stake as with restaurants they they'll be super vigilant about the rules because the alternative is them going bankrupt.

any thoughts on what's accounting for the rise there? just an increase in summer/beach travel and traffic?

the way the Carolinas are going, it's only a matter of time before this area of MD gets the whammy... especially seeing how few ####s people seem to give about social distancing or masks here (outside of stores where they're required).
OC MD finally mandated wearing masks on the boardwalk after the inevitable increase in cases there.

Looks like we're heading back down for a few weeks before school and work (hopefully and hopefully) hear up in Sept.

When we left, it was typical summer mayhem there. More worried about catching this thing down there than here, tbh.

The sprinkler in the playground across the street has been busted all summer. I've reached out to our assembly person and 311 repeatedly...all nice and optimistic, but zero movement. Thanks for that. Then our local public pool was supposed to open on Friday with a bunch of other pools around the city. Nope. Only one remaining closed. Has the feeling of a #### the poorer, browner LES, EVil and Chinatown neighborhoods (similar to what they do with the schools), but damned skippy we'll make sure everything works in Tribeca.

As a result, we subwayed it out to the sunset park (bklyn) pool on saturday. That place is an absolute gem...had no idea. Then walked down to industry city for some lunch. Nice day.

We've been on the subway a number of times already...article today in the times and elsewhere talking about how they might be safer, relatively, than other indoor spots...as long as numbers are lower and masks are worn. Every time we've been on the train so far the numbers are low, but there's always at least one person completely without mask.

So last week in NYC for the foreseeable future...off to sunny southern Cali.  Very bittersweet, but the COVID stuff really freaked my wife out and she wants to be closer to her brother.  See how long her big bank employer lets her WFH.
