Next month I am surprising the wife and taking her up to NYC to meet some friends. She has been dying to go to Nobu (one of her clients) however Nobu 57 is the only one that has a table open before 9pm. So I am taking any recommendations on other trendy type restaurants. I was thinking about Eric Ripert's Le Bernardin but I do not know anyone who has been there.
Le Bernadin is high-end more than "trendy"- always one of the best ranked restaurants in the city. What kind of food/price/scene are you looking for?
More of the high-end places. Not sure if I can get into Le Bernardin so I will need a few back ups just in case. Thanks for the help.
One of the best meals I have had was the lunch price fixe at Jean-George's Nougatine. Dinner would throw you back a number of more dollars, but they have a nice choice between Nougatine (slightly lower pricing and less formal/dressy) and Jean George's which is adjacent, both in the Trump at Central Park West. While I have not been there myself, Gramercy Tavern has always received rave reviews from whomever I know that has dined there.
Gramercy Tavern is over rated food wise, but it is a scene for sure. For my money, Market Table is the best meal in the city right now. It is not, however, a big trendy scene. It's still difficult to get a table at peak times.
Marea's the best place I've been recently (I think its on a different level from Market Table) that's more casual, though you probably can't get a reservation. Same guys also run Alto and Convivo. I also liked Nougatine though Jean George is on another level from it. If you love seafood though Le Bernadin is on an entirely different level from anything else foodwise and servicewise. If you want something completely different go to WD-50 and get the tasting menu. You'll either absolutely love it or totally despise it.

I think you need to give them a little more info.(btw- I love AND despite it... down the street from our fire-home)The Blue Hill mention above (a good one) reminded me of Annisa... which I hope is still there, pretty close by to Blue Hill. Elegant, but laid back- downtowny vibe and always a fantastic meal. (with the previosly mentioned caveat that my info in this case is 3+ years old)

Has Mexican food improved in Manhattan in the last 2-3 years? Seems like you have to go either really nice (Dos Caminos type stuff) or go really cheap (Burritoville chain/ or the Asian kitchen cooking Mexican food). There's some good spots in Brooklyn but I'm talking Manhattan.

We really like Mama Mexico, 214 East 49st. Authentic food, great atmosphere.

New Yorker here, Mexican food sucks ### in NY, but you might have good luck with the taco trucks in Queens.

There's also a street fair every weekend in Red Hook but it ended on Halloween.

But realistically it's nothing compared to the Mexican food in LA. The best tacos I ever had were in a parking lot in LA.

That's a good spot...but it's still a sit down place that takes a long time, yes? Did Baja Fresh arrive yet? They do it pretty well but still tough to find a good margarita and chili con queso.

What kinda meskin you talking? Burrito/Taco joint, or something more?IMO (as a transplanted San Francisco area guy), Mexican food has gotten a ton better- maybe not much change in the last couple of years- but definitely in the last 10.Used to only be a couple of burrito joints (Benny's, primarily... which I liken to getting McDonalds- it doens't really taste like a burrito/burger, but it does the job) outside of luckign into a random bodega that also made their own food, or finding the occasional taco-truck (used to be one up the street from my old spot on 96th and BWY). Now there's taco/burrito places all over the place... some pretty decent (but not one you'd search out to eat it if it were in SF), like Dos Toros on 4th ave and 12th st... and a bunch of the more upscale versions. My GB restauranteur (the Jean-George name-dropper) was a partner in Dos Caminos which is ok, I guess. Rosa Mexicana is pretty much dogfood. Mama Mexico... ok.eta- btw, I know it's sacrilege, but I don't mind the McDonald's owned burrito chain that's everywhere now. Spacing on the name. Not great by any means, but very comparable or better to the other options in general.

got lunch at a mex dive joint today on 5th & 33rd, Maui taco - HUGE burritos.

Anyone been to The Redhead in the EV? it was ranked #1 by city search for their friend chicken.
Walk by there every day... noticed the fried chicken on their menu since my quasi-pregnant wife is a huge fan of it. I guess I know where we're going for our next date night (unless they deliver).

You know what place actually has good fajitas? That whole in the wall Texas bar on 3rd ave/27th? Rodeo Bar, IIRC. Crap location but on the way home from midtown it's not a bad option if you want some decent Mexican dishes for a decent price. Their chips and salsa is also pretty damn good. Note: I'm from Texas originally and kind of a Mexican food snob. Papacitos in Brooklyn is awesome:

Good know they have fried chicken in the EV now. Popeyes on 1st and 11th used to be my spot so it's good to know they have fresher options.

Popeyes :lmao: their promotional material in the windows always looked like puke, so we stayed clear. It's gone, btw. Replaced by a low-end sushi joint... which is all we need.eta: we were talking about Clinton Bakery for the pancakes- but they have decent fried chicken too (not great). Fat Hippo, down Clinton St, also had decent fried chicken. Don't even know if Fat Hippo has survived

Popeyes is the best fried chicken fast food chain IMO (but yes, the one on 1st ave was ghetto). Kills KFC and all that stuff. Much better in the south - nothing beats fresh spicy fried chicken. I don't eat fast food much but I'm all over Chick-fila, Popeyes, Baja Fresh and In/Out. Speaking of Chick-fila, I'm surprised the only one in Manhattan is in the NYU student food court. We'd routinely hire students on Craigslist to pick up/deliver orders for us. That place would kill in Union Sq.

Hairy Monk on 3rd and something (in the 20's) has good fajitas as well (not a mexican joint, more of a Red Sox bar). Turns out it's the same owner as the Irish Rogue over on 9th ave., so you get the same high quality buffalo wings too.

btw, may move back to NYC in April (88 Rivington). Debating between that or the Euro thing in Copenhagen,DK. Austin is awesome but it's definitely not NYC.

Hill Country, the best BBQ in the city, opened Hill Country Fried Chicken across from Madison Square Park. I haven't tried it yet because of the lines but I've heard good things.
ive heard it is delicious. will try it soon and report back.
eating it at my desk right now, good but pricey as to be expected w/ the namethey have a boylans soda fountain and skinless fried chicken option (Mama El's recipe) that uses breadcrumbs instead.

fries seem to be a rip off for what you get portion wise but very good

large fountain, breast, drum, biscuit, small fries = $15 - opens up at noon during the week, no line

Not a bad price I guess. I'll try to hit it next week.

True. When you're going to dump 10 bucks on Pret or Hale and Hearty, 15 for some good fried chicken sounds great!

$15 is a really nice sit down dinner where I live.

True but we not in Kansas anymore....considering I can't get out of fastfood joints in NYC for cheaper than $10, I find $15 for midtown lunch quite normal. Downtown and in non business hoods you can find much better lunch deals M-F. btw, there is a Fried Chicken place close to 9th avenue in Hells Kitchen that is $1/piece. Always a line. Not sure on the quality but for a $1 you can't really lose.

Visiting next weekend (after thanksgiving weekend).

Want to see the tree and maybe finally go to the top of the empire state.

Only gonna really have a day or so, gonna read this thread for tips on things to see/do.

A meal at the parent restaurant, Hill Country, will normally set me back about $40-50 (incl. tip - and that is only like 2 meats, 2 small sides and 2 beers), ) so yeah $15 for 1 of their lunches is a good deal.

I'm not looking forward to this part of my NYE visit to the city. My family members are all getting cheaper Christmas presents just so I don't starve while I'm there.

lots of great, affordable dining options in the East Village/LES and Brooklyn w/ some great spots in Soho and West Village that won't break the bank. Stay away from dining in Midtown (overpriced, tourist stuff aside from some of the choice restaurant$$$$).

Anyone ever eat at or hear of Veritas on East 20th?

Darrelle Revis tweeted it's the best restaurant in NY - Sounds good enough for me.

Harry- haven't been to the top of the Empire State since I visited here as a kid in the 70s... but I just went up to the top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center) which was pretty amazing if you want to go up a tall building and get great views of the city (and I'm a jaded NYer). Plus it's right above the tree, so two birds etc.

hey you. guy. just because it's raining, doesn't mean it's ok for your to use your golf umbrella. keep it in your SUV for trips to the burbs where you won't be taking out entire city sidewalks with that ####### thing. tia.

and you. broad. how about opening your umbrella all the way after you've already climbed the stairs out of the subway and are on the sidewalk. yeah, your hair might take a few drops- but the four of us trying to walk down the steps, who's eyes you took out with the umbrella, might be able to have use of our sight.

and you tourists. 2 abreast, or I start playing red rover, red rover send floppo right over. and like elementary school, I always look for the weakest link- that means granny may is taking a header into the gutter after I drop a shoulder on her.

carry on.

It was so ####### windy today that I didn't even bother taking my umbrella out of my bagThe garbage cans on the corners this evening on my way home had become umbrella graveyards, and most of the umbrellas had either been turned inside out or had the fabric rip off of their frames, rendering them into umbrella skeletons

Really wish I had a good camera

Wondering if anyone know how to go about doing this. My wife is looking to find a new company to work for. She's a Controller/VP of Finance for a mid sized fashion consulting company in the Garment District. She's sick of the industry and hates the neighborhood. She's moved up the ladder very well, is only 40, and hopes this next company will be the last move.

She's had only 2 interviews in the last year and has been "dumbing down" her resume (taking out the fact that she runs the tech dept.) to try and get in the door. It's a combination of being over-qualified and trying not to take a 25%-50% cut in pay.

My suggestion to her is to be more pro-active. She's constantly checking the job sites, subscribes to ladder.com and puts in the effort. Is there a way to maybe use Google maps or something to find a broad range of companies, in specific industries, in specific areas of the city. I'm thinking if she could put together a list of like 20 or 30 companies that fit what she is looking for she could go to their websites and see if they are looking to fill a position that she would qualify for. She's finding that more companies are going it on their own instead of paying recruiter fees since there is such a huge unemployed workforce.

thx for any help.

My wife is a fashion designer... your wife's company hiring? And in reply to your question- seems like she should pick a large handful of companies that she'd like to work with and filter out the ones that are in the garment district (otherwise known as the pimple on the ### of the city) and then contact the companies directly, whether they're hiring or not. I know my iwfe has worked/interviewed at places all over the place. JCrew, Gap, and lots of smaller boutiquey places are more downtown.

Have her use Google Adwords, if she is creative, the right job will find her.

Hey New York Guys - is this place a good location for a group of guys to stay for a bachelor party: http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p4...?uni_id=1024235

I'm not organizing it, but the spot has been thrown out to the group for feedback. Will be the middle of februray, so I'm sure it will be cold as hell. To top that, it's a few months from Mrs. TF's due date, so I might not be 100% in...but I'm really just curious as none of us are from there, and I don't know where the best man found it. Alternative option is The Roosevelt.

To top that, it's a few months from Mrs. TF's due date, so I might not be 100% in...but I'm really just curious as none of us are from there, and I don't know where the best man found it. Alternative option is The Roosevelt.

She's finding that more companies are going it on their own instead of paying recruiter fees since there is such a huge unemployed workforce.thx for any help.
That was my first suggestion. Pick companies you would like to work for (i.e - Hyatt) and go to them but I was looking more broad range. She's really not picky about the name but has specific desires if she is to make the move, young growing co. , technology based, certain size staff to manage, etc. The Long Island Business News puts out their "Book of Lists" each year that contains hundreds of businesses on L.I. Is there something comparable to it for NYC? Or a website?I'll PM you floppo

Have her use Google Adwords, if she is creative, the right job will find her.
I'll look into...thx!

I'd say yes to the first one, maybe to the second, and no frecaking way to the third.
I'm not a fan of Murray Hill, but the apartment looks great- and a good idea vs setting up camp in a hotel, IMO. Even though I don't like the hood, you'll be fairly central there, depending on what you guys will be doing. Easy cab/subway rides to wherever you need to go.
