Trip Report - March 11-13
My wife was in NYC for work last week so I was able to join her for the weekend. I thought I'd post a quick trip report with a rundown on the places we went/food we ate. I'd be interested in knowing what locals think of the places we went but also hope my quick review of each place can be added to the master notebook.
Friday night - We hit S.O.B.s at Varick & Houston. We love live Latin music and were not disappointed by the band playing that night, La Excelencia. They were very good and the dance floor was packed with Salsa dancing. The DJ was awesome between sets too. The Mojito pitchers were money. The food was predictably average - certainly nothing special IMO. We knew that going in though and had a great night.
We only had shared appetizers at S.O.B.s so we headed over to CrifDogs at 113 St. Mark's place. That place was AWESOME. Huge late night crowd and the hot dogs were unreal. The menu is amazing - I went with the "Morning Jersey" - a dog wrapped in ham, cheese and a fried egg. There is a small bar attached to the place that you can only access via the phone booth - you have to call and the bartender on the other side of the wall will open a hidden door to let you in if there is room. There wasn't when we were there but it looked very cool. I really liked this place.
Saturday - After we rolled out of bed we had to meet some of my wife's colleagues at Eataly. I'd best describe it as an Ikea for Italian food/wares but that's maybe not giving it quite enough credit. It does accurately describe what it feels like to be in there on a Saturday though. An interesting place to browse around I guess. We did share a Calzone there - it was fine. If I was a local I'd consider getting some Italian meats and cheeses there, but I can't see myself ever trying to head back there.
We then wandered the Village for a while, got our favorite coffee at the Porto Rico Coffee Company, and just enjoyed wandering around. My wife got her favorite Rice Pudding at Rice to Riches. We then headed over to a place called The Meatball Shop at Allen & Stanton. It's not a huge place, and everything on the menu revolves around meatballs. The wait to get a table at 3 PM on a Saturday was approx. 90 minutes! So instead I ordered a Meatball Hoagie with provolone and Parmesan cream sauce to go for the four of us to split up and try - holy crap was that good. Because we didn't eat in I didn't get a feel for the clientele, but that meatball sandwich was dynamite.
We headed a couple of blocks down and had a few drinks at a place called Spitzer's Corner. Seemed like a pretty good place to hang out. Lots of people there eating brunch mid-to-late afternoon. I can't speak to the food though.
My wife and I had planned to meet another couple at Jane for dinner (Thompson & Houston). We chose the place because the Ricotta Gnocchi was featured on "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" and it didn't disappoint. Everything enjoyed by our table was fantastic! It isn't a super fancy place, or even a super expensive place, but the food was awesome. It exceeded our expectations.
After dinner we wandered over to Dante's Cafe - the canoli there was amazing as was the Red Velvet cake. A nice spot with fresh deserts and strong coffee.
Late night we then hit the Fat Cat - a favorite of ours for live jazz and bar games. We didn't play scrabble or shuffleboard this time around, but we did enjoy the jam session and PBRs. I love this quirky unique spot though we were older than the average clientele there - seems like more of a geek/hipster hangout be we don't care - cool spot.
Sunday was pretty chill - my wife had an earlier flight out than I did, so I ended up just walking 5th avenue doing some window shopping (though I did buy something for my Mom at Tiffany's - that store is pretty cool to walk around). After that I hit an amazing Halal food cart at approx. 52nd and 6th - this was my 2nd time visiting this cart and both times (once at 3 AM and this time at 2 PM) there was a huge line of people and for good reason. An amazing platter of meat and rice along with a Coke for only $7. I hope I can get back to that stand every time I'm in NYC - it's that good. I've never ever seen a line at any other food cart other than this one. I then wandered through Times Square and took a breather reading a magazine in Bryant Park and watched some old farts play Bocce before heading to LGA.
Had a great time of course. Can't wait for my next trip - I'm certain it won't come soon enough.
