What's better? Guiggenheim or the Met?
Guggenheim is a very cool building to look at and walk into, but usually doesn't have the greatest art (unless there's a specific show) and isn't even a good place to look at art.The Met... jeebus. It's got everything- what do you want to see?I actually prefer MoMa, if you're having to pick just one... but I love modern art and much prefer it to wading through all the period stuff at the Met. But if you haven't been to any of these, I think it's gotta be the Met, just for the variety.

Heading downtown tonight for a performance of Merchant of Venice tonight. Will report back.
 It closed three weeks ago...Did someone open another one without Pacino?
Yeah, this was at Pace University with F Murray Abraham as Shylock. Some cool albeit at time schticky modern style, but Abraham was great. I didnt see the Pacino version, though my parents saw both and said Abraham was the better Shylock - neither as good as Dustin Hoffman as Shylock a good number of years back.

Yeah, that seems perfect for him.

I anticipate using the subway 10-15 times in the next 4 days. Is there a week pass I can buy? Thought I remember one from last time, but can't remember why I didn't buy one.

Weekly pass is now $29. They used to have a one-day for around $7 and a three-day (I think) but ditched those two in the latest round of fare hikes at the beginning of the year.

I know this will affect more than just NYers, but figured we're on the front line- NY Times is going to start charging for online use. We'll get 20 articles per month for free, after which they'll block content and ask for a subscription.

It was too good to last- but I can't blame them.

I'd like to suggest a restaurant if you're ever in Greenwich Village...Cuba I used to eat here quite a bit a few years ago whenever I was in NYC. I hadn't been back in probably a year or two. Went again on my most recent trip. Absolutely LOVE this place. I am definitely making this a must eat place when I am in town. Make sure you make reservations.

Overheard in NYC:

Drunk Teen #1: where should we go after the parade?

Drunk Teen #2: let's go to "the Village".

Drunk Teen #1: aw, man, the Village is The SH**!

Drunk Teen #2: is that good or bad?

Drunk Teen #1: I dunno. I've just heard that.

645 9th Ave

Its a half block away, been open 3-4 weeks, always packed. Decided to check it.

Not bad, but nothing that would make me want to go back. Seems a bit pricey for what it is. Apparently this is Justin Timberlake's chain (another location on UES) - didn't know that going in.

Anyway, went with another couple, service was good, food was good not great. There are too many options along this stretch of 9th Ave and around the corner on 46th Street to warrant putting it into the rotation, but I wouldn't balk at going back if someone else suggested it.

NYC (surprisingly) has a lot of high quality BBQ places that have come on line since I moved here 12 years ago. I don't think this one is going to become elite anytime soon, but it doesn't suck either.

BL- just remembered we went to the Ember Room last week- right in your hood too. Pretty solid food (nouveau asian, I guess with a asian bbq slant  ) decent interiors ruined by terrible lighting. service was ok, not great.

My wife tries to hit Cuba every time she's in the city (which isn't that often). In fact she was just there last week and loved it, as always. This is a great call.

Hmmm. I've never heard of this place- which, as a married guy with a kid doesn't mean that much lately. But given the two responses here are from visitors, I had to look it up- seems like a loud, maybe fun place to go with good drinks, specialty angle (they roll cigars for you and have a live band) and ok food? Sound about right? Or is the food actually worthwhile outside of the ambiance (which I can see being fun, but doesn't sound like my thing as a curmudgeon). Any of the NYCers been to this place?

I like it, the food is definitely a step-up from Bro. Jimmy's. I heard JT sold it a while back, some girl that worked there listed him (along with the current managers) in a sexual harassment lawsuit and he responded to it: "Listen ho, I sold that year's ago."btw back to the food, good biscuits and mac'n'cheese at least from the UES location, I assume the west side location is similar. They also usually have attractive bar tenders and a similar clientele.

Trip Report - March 11-13

My wife was in NYC for work last week so I was able to join her for the weekend. I thought I'd post a quick trip report with a rundown on the places we went/food we ate. I'd be interested in knowing what locals think of the places we went but also hope my quick review of each place can be added to the master notebook. :hifive:

Friday night - We hit S.O.B.s at Varick & Houston. We love live Latin music and were not disappointed by the band playing that night, La Excelencia. They were very good and the dance floor was packed with Salsa dancing. The DJ was awesome between sets too. The Mojito pitchers were money. The food was predictably average - certainly nothing special IMO. We knew that going in though and had a great night.

We only had shared appetizers at S.O.B.s so we headed over to CrifDogs at 113 St. Mark's place. That place was AWESOME. Huge late night crowd and the hot dogs were unreal. The menu is amazing - I went with the "Morning Jersey" - a dog wrapped in ham, cheese and a fried egg. There is a small bar attached to the place that you can only access via the phone booth - you have to call and the bartender on the other side of the wall will open a hidden door to let you in if there is room. There wasn't when we were there but it looked very cool. I really liked this place.

Saturday - After we rolled out of bed we had to meet some of my wife's colleagues at Eataly. I'd best describe it as an Ikea for Italian food/wares but that's maybe not giving it quite enough credit. It does accurately describe what it feels like to be in there on a Saturday though. An interesting place to browse around I guess. We did share a Calzone there - it was fine. If I was a local I'd consider getting some Italian meats and cheeses there, but I can't see myself ever trying to head back there.

We then wandered the Village for a while, got our favorite coffee at the Porto Rico Coffee Company, and just enjoyed wandering around. My wife got her favorite Rice Pudding at Rice to Riches. We then headed over to a place called The Meatball Shop at Allen & Stanton. It's not a huge place, and everything on the menu revolves around meatballs. The wait to get a table at 3 PM on a Saturday was approx. 90 minutes! So instead I ordered a Meatball Hoagie with provolone and Parmesan cream sauce to go for the four of us to split up and try - holy crap was that good. Because we didn't eat in I didn't get a feel for the clientele, but that meatball sandwich was dynamite.

We headed a couple of blocks down and had a few drinks at a place called Spitzer's Corner. Seemed like a pretty good place to hang out. Lots of people there eating brunch mid-to-late afternoon. I can't speak to the food though.

My wife and I had planned to meet another couple at Jane for dinner (Thompson & Houston). We chose the place because the Ricotta Gnocchi was featured on "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" and it didn't disappoint. Everything enjoyed by our table was fantastic! It isn't a super fancy place, or even a super expensive place, but the food was awesome. It exceeded our expectations.

After dinner we wandered over to Dante's Cafe - the canoli there was amazing as was the Red Velvet cake. A nice spot with fresh deserts and strong coffee.

Late night we then hit the Fat Cat - a favorite of ours for live jazz and bar games. We didn't play scrabble or shuffleboard this time around, but we did enjoy the jam session and PBRs. I love this quirky unique spot though we were older than the average clientele there - seems like more of a geek/hipster hangout be we don't care - cool spot.

Sunday was pretty chill - my wife had an earlier flight out than I did, so I ended up just walking 5th avenue doing some window shopping (though I did buy something for my Mom at Tiffany's - that store is pretty cool to walk around). After that I hit an amazing Halal food cart at approx. 52nd and 6th - this was my 2nd time visiting this cart and both times (once at 3 AM and this time at 2 PM) there was a huge line of people and for good reason. An amazing platter of meat and rice along with a Coke for only $7. I hope I can get back to that stand every time I'm in NYC - it's that good. I've never ever seen a line at any other food cart other than this one. I then wandered through Times Square and took a breather reading a magazine in Bryant Park and watched some old farts play Bocce before heading to LGA.

Had a great time of course. Can't wait for my next trip - I'm certain it won't come soon enough.

Great write up... :thumbup:also cool to hear some things I never knew even as a long-time resident.... secret bar at Crif-dogs? That's right in my hood and I had no idea. Reminds me a bit of my old date standby location, Angel's Share, which you can only enter by walking through a Shabu-shabu joint first. And that food cart- I was only just told about that place a month or two ago by a Ghanaian friend... told me it's Egyptian food, fwiw- and he swears by it.

G-D I feel old. Haven't been to S.O.B.s in over a decade, but it is a blast. First time I went was right after I moved here, and it was awesome...and then about 3 a.m. a half dozen carnivàle dancers came out of the basement and took it to a whole other level. I went back a few weeks later to see Tito Puente. Glad to hear it still hopping - we don't have enough Latin down here.

ETA: lemme re-phrase...we don't have enough Latin night clubs that old white guys feel comfortable going into.

So...just occurred to me I've never seen a recommendation in this thread for anything in central Harlem or Spainish Harlem...or did I miss it?

Food is definitely worth it. I have only been on Friday or Saturday nights and it usually has a good mix of young and old. (The live band is 1 or 2 pieces, no dance floor or anything like that. You don't have to worry about it turning into a nightclub while you're eating)

Just got this news from a gb.

The police are ticketing cyclists in Central Park now. Not just for running lights- but also for speeding. SPEEDING. at 6am on weekdays.

speedtrap set up at the bottom of one of the hills- ticketing people for going over 15mph. I'd usually hit the high 30s on the backside of a couple CP hills- and most people are averaging 20+ going around the loop. wtf?! and anyways- I thought the speed limit was 25?thanks again, mike bloomberg for all the nice bike lanes. how about you ticket the dumbasses blowing the wrong way and through red lights around pedestrians instead of going after athletes working out early in the morning with very few people around.

OK, so American Idiot will be closing before we get there the week of June 11th. Recommendations for other shows? Family of 5 including "kids" 21, 19, 17. Already planning on Fuerza Bruta and Avenue Q. Really wanted to go to one show on Broadway and thought American Idiot would be perfect for the kids. They've already seen Wicked, The Lion King, Rent, Blue Man Group, etc. What about Billy Elliot? Any others? (wife and I have seen Phantom but kids haven't). Wanted to have these 3 shows + 1 Yankee game to center the nighttime activities. Any input appreciated?

Jersey Boys still playing? Highly recommend it.

What does that mean? You arrive on Saturday the 11th...and stay the week following? Or you will there the week that ends June the 11th?So, how about a different kind of suggestion...and if its not your cup of tea, no worries.

The Ballet Nacional de Cuba is playing at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) that week.

La Magia de la Danza

I've been a season subscriber at BAM for over a decade. Very diverse, eclectic, avant garde. As I said, might not be your thing. But if you guys open minded and enjoy seeing something different/memorable...

That's June 8-11. If I misunderstood, and you are there the following week, perhaps you would like to try a modern dance performance at the Joyce in Chelsea.

Still playing, walked down that block today on my way to the green market.

We're dying to see The Book of Mormon... it might be a tough ticket, especially after the rave in the Times last week, but who knows.War Horse is also supposed to be fantastic (and another on our list).

Saw War Horse this weekend (still in previews), it kicks ###.

Floppo...do you guys ever take your lil' guy to Wee Bop Jazz @ LC? Just curious. They also have a monthly family concert series, sort of an educational introduction to different styles. Yesterday was Big Band. Next month (21st) is New Orleans. You should check it out.

http://jalc.org/concerts/c_jazzED09.asp

If you come early, they have a little jazz movement thing in the atrium for smaller kids.

Somebody at Jr's school mentioned it, and I promptly forgot- looks great... especially for our kid who is Mr Rhythm.Well ####- it's totally sold out. Of course.

edit- I'll look into the next concert in the series (New Orleans)- thanks

We went to the Big Band thing yesterday because we won tickets from Time Out (actually, Time Out Kids - think they have a monthly contest). Anyway, concert was good, tickets said the face value was $28...for what it is, not bad, I wouldn't mind going again. Its mostly concert and partly informative - obvs geared for kids a little older than ours, but whatevs, always good to introduce them to different experiences.Anyway, from my perspective, the coolest thing was the gift bag that came with the tickets we won. Bunch of CDs from Wynton and the J@LC orchestra, and this cool coffee table book. Its one of those things you might never buy for yourself, but love as a gift.

Oh, and def recommend Wee Bop Jazz if you can swing it. Sent our daughter to an 8-10 week class this year and she loved it. The teacher was a Columbia adjunct who specializes in jazz interpretations of childrens books (the one week I was able to go, she sang this. We've tried out a lot of different toddler music programs, and J@LC is easily the best we've experienced so far.

This would've been the perfect year for him... too bad I spaced. I'll store it away for the fall (or summer, if they've got a session). This is a funny inbetween age for music classes- most of the classes are really geared for kids up to the age of 3, and then private lessons start around 5 (other than Suzuki craziness which starts teaching them prenatally). We've got our guy in a class at 3rd Street Music Settlement, but it feels a little young for him (even though he seems to like it). 4 year olds (or almost 4) don't seem to have any options for music, so the Wee Bop thing looks really great.

Looking at The Book of Mormon now. Can get tickets for the Tuesday night I'm there in June. No deals though to be sure. I think Orchestra is $137. Irreverant humor is what we like (why I was thinking Avenue Q) so this is one worth looking into. Do you think tix will only be harder to get (get tix now) or should I wait to see if there will be any deals in 2 months? Anybody familiar with the Eugene O'Neill Theatre? Worth it to get orchestra or should I save some many with Mezz, etc?

I think this NY trip may rival or surpass the Disneyworld world trip in terms of $$. Even using miles/points for airfare from LA and hotel this is still going to be boatlads. Yankee game, Fuertabruza, Avenue Q, maybe The Book of Mormon + Museums, sightseeing and the amount of chow our family of 5 can eat...We're talking spensive even for FBG standards.

Wondering if instead of The Book of Mormon maybe I just roll with what I can get at the TKTS booth at 50%. Watching Groupon, Travelzoo and Broadwaybox.com for deals on the other shows.

What's my best bet for the Yankee game? Single game tickets now available. Looking at June 15th game vs. Rangers, Wed night. Just buy them now off their website? Or wait? Any deals to be had midweek from other sources? (in LA midweek games can be head from guys on Craigslist). Also, what sections should I look at it to still enjoy the Yankee experience without spending $100+ a ticket? Any reasonable seats in the $50 or less range?

2 months out, starting to think about what I should be buying now vs. waiting until I get closer...
