Oh- just walked North a bit today since it's so nice out and in the mood to hunt for something else to eat for lunch. Walked up Madison past the bank. and that bank. and that bank. and that bank. and a Starbucks. and a bank. Made a left down 44th or 45th... pretty much nothing (a couple of little-bit-o-everything deli-bar places) all the way to 6th. Headed South... and ended up grabbing a salad form Kayser.

There has to be something up there above 42nd between Mad and 6th?

Did watch a bit of Broadway in Bryant- every thursday they havea broadway show do songs on stage. It was Revolution today (never heard of it)... 80s style heavy-metal-lite.

Between 5th and 6th north of 42nd has plenty of options. Between 5th and Park is nil.

I totally support this. Way to many bike riders totally ignore the traffic laws that apply to them. I fully support all the things the City has done to support and encourage bike riders (bike lanes, Citi bike, etc...) however many bike riders don't follow the traffic laws, which apply to them. Most annoying to me is not stopping at traffic lights. The other day some rider nearly mowed me and my three kids down going through a traffic light and then proceeded to yell at me. It's a good thing, IMO.

Bike lanes have kinda/sorta started to sort themselves out lately with all involved becoming more aware of how to navigate with each other, but there are still people who ruin it. I think some police enforcement will force everybody to be even more aware.

Cyclists going the wrong way are at the top of the wrong-scale, IMO. Then, in order: pedestrians popping out into the bike lane midblock; pedestrians walking in the bike lane; cars blocking the lane; cyclists running lights without concern for peds/bikes/cars going with the green; cyclists riding like #######s (headphones/unaware, zig-zagging so nobody can pass them); cyclists who ride in the middle of the lane, not allowing people to pass; cyclists who stop and wait for the light in the crosswalk and block pedestrians from crossing. There are many others...

I wonder though- is it illegal to walk in the bike lane? Will people get ticketed for that?

I've said repeated that my plan as a bike-commuter is that when I break the law (running red lights- I never go the wrong way), my actions should never adversely affect anybody following the rules. If a pedestrian, cyclist or car has to change what they're doing in any way (braking, stopping, swerving, etc), I've done it all wrong.

eta: I should note that my "wrong-scale" is purely from a biker's perspective.

It's a fair point, but I agree with you- if the crosswalk is being used, bikers shouldn't be going through the light... or should be yielding their asses off if they do. That was the point I was making earlier.

And as I think more about if I care if a car does something when nobody's around... if there's really nobody around and what they're doing doesn't adversely affect anybody- no, I don't really care what they do.

Of course, the most obnoxious folks are the group that YOU don't belong to. It's only natural. I have been all three, driver, cyclist, and pedestrian, and I gotta tell ya, they can all behave badly. There are fewer cyclists than either drivers or walkers, so maybe they just stand out more when they act like fools. It's not even close, pedestrians are the worst. Any busy intersection, there is never not at least one person doing something stupid. Standing in the bike path, or standing three steps off the sidewalk when they don't have the right of way, greatly endangering themselves and others. Drivers are rude, and will block the box for no reason, but they don't do the dumb stuff you see people on foot do. The biggest problem I see are drivers sitting in the middle of the avenue, blocking an entire street from crossing. So dumb. They literally gain nothing, just wind up waiting at the next light.

They have more penalties when they behave badly, and traffic actually prohibits them from a lot of dangerous situations. Cabbies are much worse, especially late at night, but mostly only to other drivers.

But there are no penalties for stupid walking. Jay-walking? No one's afraid of that.

illegal on the sidewalks... and pretty rare here.

the worse drivers I've seen are the Ferry Buses (west side) who are oblivious to the fact that they're driving something larger than a Gremlin. Ride up on sidewalks, drive by cars and bikes and then make a turn in front of them, run lights... the worst. They make garbage truck drivers look good- at least those guys know what they're doing, they just don't give a ####.

So my wife is crossing Delancey this morning pushing my daughter in the stroller- a car flies through the left turn onto Delancey and hits the stroller, almost knocking it over. The car then takes off, leaving my wife freaked out and screaming. She managed to take down a few digits of the license plate and take a blurry photo of the car with her phone. She calls the cops- who are at first very dismissive ("you don't have all the digits of the license plate? oh... we can't even file a report then") until EMS gets there and they see that this is a serious thing.

Thank god, Wife is ok, daughter is ok and even the stroller is ok. ####### people. I'm hoping that real life can imitate art here and somebody can use their infinite CSI/Law and Order computer zoom/focus to get the license plate and bust this #######.

The $3 disposable can break at anytime... I haven't used one of those in at least 4-5 years. Way too unreliable!

I was behind someone who had one of those, kept it open under a scaffold and the thing went the width of the walkway. No one could pass the person who was just shuffling along. It's not really high on my list of annoyances and I usually get a good laugh out of it because they look silly with them. Especially when they are small people.

I lived one block west of 261 for eight years. It is improving, and Inside Schools has a favorable review. Personally I don't think it's on par with 8, 29 or 58 (Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill or Carrol Gardens). But I love that neighborhood and it's only going to get better IMO.
