Completely unsurprising FC42 is that guy.

Just move to Dix Hills already.
Love to leave the city!!! My wife just doesn't want to go... She has been doing HW on public schools and is figuring out we are zoned to a top school, makes my argument even more difficult.
8 or 29? Both are good schools. The challenge is what to do after K-5.
Not 29, we are basically one street away from being zoned there... In fact everything I have heard is this is the most vanilla school in the city. All the kids get dropped off by their nannies, no parent interaction, etc.. We are zoned pre-K there though.

261, which supposedly is climbing the ranks and loved by every parent who has a child there.
we heard both of those things about our son's first school- ps 110 (LES), which we hated. but we're hateful people, so there's that.

eta: but hopefully it works out for you guys. sooo many involved, caring parents in the city- seems almost impossible for the schools to not get better.
I lived one block west of 261 for eight years. It is improving, and Inside Schools has a favorable review. Personally I don't think it's on par with 8, 29 or 58 (Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill or Carrol Gardens). But I love that neighborhood and it's only going to get better IMO.
If you look at the zoning for this school, I can't see how it isn't a quality school... http://newyork.hometownlocator.com/schools/profiles,n,ps%20261%20philip%20livingston,z,11201,t,pb,i,1080246.cfm

It encompasses Heights, Cobble, & Boerum... My only concern is where Gowanus is zoned to (although in this map it doesn't look like part of 261), I hate to say that, but that is not a nice place and could be a dealbreaker for me. I'd imagine it is very difficult to get my kid zoned into 29 at this stage, even though we are one block away from their zone.

ETA: PS 32 looks like it zoned for Gowanus http://www.greatschools.org/school-district-boundaries-map/?districtId=821&level=e&schoolId=2149&state=NY

The NYCHA kids don't go to 261. Gowanus House goes to 32. Not sure about Wyckoff Houses (further west), but I don't think they go to 32.

FWIW Gowanus is relatively mild. They're full of poors but gang related activity is nothing like other projects in my observations. Non-issue for anyone who lives in Boerum Hill.

Wyckoff goes to 38, Gowanus is 32, just checked the zones... A woman was raped in the neighborhood (I think near Warren St) 2 weeks ago, supposedly there is video of the guy coming from the Gowanus direction. I'd suspect that the majority of crime in this neighborhood comes out of these two places.

Sounds like you need to move to the burbs, and stat.
I don't enjoy making stereotypes, but housing projects are not good places... I'm happy at 261 (which BTW is only 1/3 white http://www.greatschools.org/new-york/brooklyn/2714-P.S.-261-Philip-Livingston/), I just don't need my son going to the same place as kids from projects. I don't think this is crazy talk
not crazy at all. but a couple of kids from the hood aren't necessarily going to ruin Jr's school. so far from my own limited experience, I'd be more worried about the school if was really close to one of the projects in question, or if your kid's commute took him by them.

during my kid's K year at 110, a middle or HS kid got shot and killed on the street (across from NYCHA) my wife took every day (while pushing our toddler in a stroller) to take my son home from school- right after school let out. She missed it by a few minutes thankfully.

Seems to me, the kids at that school, a mix of across the board GT kids and gen-ed kids from the projects and LES EVil, were decent kids. Parents were much less involved than they are at our new Chelsea school- and that, along with a much better principle, makes the school much better. There are projects feeding our new school too... nothing scary happened yet from the poor folk.

This and I'm sure it goes a long way!! No walking by any projects either for us where we currently are.

FWIW, the crime you referenced (2:45 a.m. Robbery & attempted rape) was at Clinton & Warren - three avenues over, in the heart of Cobble Hill. Linking that to Gowanus Houses is absurd.

Like I said, they're full of poors. They're not crime ridden. Where I live now (Hell's Kitchen) probably has more crime. I walked Gowanus House 5-10 times a week with my gf when I lived around there. Never felt unsafe.

You seriously should move out to the burbs.

"Despite the takedowns, Gowanus remains one of the most crime-ridden housing projects in the city, with 62 index crimes in 2013"

The 76th Precinct has the third lowest crime rate in the city. They cover from the Red Hook waterfront to Atlantic Ave over to Third Avenue. Includes Gowanus & Wyckoff NYCHA. The 84th (Brooklyn Heights & DUMBO) is ninth - also includes downtown, Fort Greene & Clinton Hill.

Statistically Farragut Residences (near the Brooklyn Navy Yard) has way more violent crime than Boerum Hill/Red Hook - at least three NYCHA housing complexes in the latter hoods.

Stat, FC42. You'll be more comfortable in a more homogenous environment.

I've lived here for a decade, this neighborhood is great. The crime index indicates a good amount of crime at Gowanus is all I'm saying.

What's the plan for Labor Day, NYCers?
Had this full week off for a pretty sweet Labor Week celebration. Got my wife and 10 of our friends a super stretch and toured wine country on the North Fork last week for the day. Perfect day out there and got completely (yet classily) obliterated. Spent the next four days like they were consecutive Sundays, alternating between waking up early and hitting coffee and the beach or sleeping in, then hitting coffee and the beach. What amazing Summer, weatherwise.

This weekend, Ocean City, MD as my dad has a condo here. Honestly, would prefer to stay on Long Island, it's an awesome time of year. Will be back Sunday for BBQ/Party at a friends in true suburbia (Levittown) and then we have fireworks essentially out our front window over the water Monday.

My inlaws have houses near OC, MD- have we discussed this already? We usually spend a week or so down there in the summer, and have spent a few New Years' there as well.

Not my cup of juice, but it's free and the family's there, which is good for the kids. I like Assateague a lot- less boardwalky/meth-heady.

eta: the week sounds awesome, btw. we turned down a chance to spend the weekend on the North Fork with our gbs who have been kinda-sorta inviting us out there for years without ever *officially* inviting us- "you should really come out some time"... "yeah- we'd love to!"... but I'm not one to push that unless they offer a specific day or time... which they finally did. I've never been out there and am dying to get a feel for it.

Looks like we'll be spending Saturday at Ocean Grove, NJ... because we can take the train there, and because we like it (and because daddy doesn't want to shell out for Labor day car rental). and then Sunday, if I'm really lucky, Ikea. Can't wait.

Unless the set aside affordable units are designated for a dangerous population (recovering addicts, mental health issues etc, separating the lower income units is not needed and, if anything, could bring along more problems than benefits. It's been demonstrated in a number of mixed income Multifamily developments that there is no additional risk and often benefits to the building community, the local community and especially any children who are growing up in the affordable units as they don't grow up with the stigma of being lesser / different poor.

And for those who insist on a source, ill self source my ten years experience in the development / Multifamily industry who would look to have non segregated entrances in a building we would develop (and in fact, are in the process thereof)

Had to wait 30 minutes for the F this morning, which put Floppinho slightly late to school (thankfully still on back-to-school schedule, so not late... which apparently counts against the kid's record for applying to Jr HS and HS. :loco: ), and put me late to work on a day when I needed to be there early to get ready for a meeting. Also shoved us in a jammed subway with the usual dumby yabos.

So he and I are both in ####ty moods as we race to his school from the subway stop... and then- only then- I remember what day today is. So inconsequential, being late or made pissy by dopes.

F Train is the worst!!! At least 2/5 days a week it is either off schedule or crowded to the point of extreme discomfort.
Usually not that bad for us... if we have to wait 10 minutes, that's a long time. But yeah- by the time it rolls into 2nd Ave, it's packed. My son- who used to be scared to go anywhere where there's a crowd- pries his way inside without hesitation (but always waits for people to get off the train first), leaving me pushing through peopl to keep up. I don't remember ever having to wait 30 minutes during rush hour... unless there was a problem on the tracks or with a train.

Umbrella day

!
After getting to the office, I texted my wife that it was "big" umbrella day.
:hot:

I think it was FC who opened his golf umbrella on the subway station stairs giving me a nice blast of rain water as I was coming down. Thanks FC!

But seriously- can't get your pretty little heads wet for the second and a half you're wlking up the stairs, so.. tough luck every body else- I'm opening (or closing) my umbrella down here instead of up there.

Good Morning New Yorkers... A few things on my mind this morning. The MTA could be the most mismanaged organization on Earth. Every time it rains there are delays and overcrowding. I don't fully understand this as prob half the system is underground and trains run on tracks. http://i.imgur.com/MMf2raq.jpg That is an F train at about 9:45 in the morning, I can't imagine how much worse it was between 8-9. Anyways, they suck, MTA rant over.

Floppo, I looked around while I was walking up 14th street, and I would say that roughly 45-50% of people have a slightly to very over-sized umbrella. Sample size of prob 75-100 people. My umbrella is large, but not overly in your face gigantic. I don't think I inconvenienced a single person with my umbrella this morning.

ETA: The pic doesn't even do it justice, we were packed in to the point of motionlessness on that train.

There's no convincing me otherwise about this, FC- in spite of your one-day sample size.

I saw too many of them today too.

Oh- hey... that's the F train.... I was wearing a yellow coat today- I think you can see me in that picture!

(eta: I'm the one glaring at FC)

I see worse than that train on a regular sunny day (L train rider).

I rode the F train for a good potion of the 8 years I lived in Boerum Hill, that's packed. But its generally far less crowded than the other trains I used (2/3 and 4/5).

Walking to work rules, though TBH I hate midtown. Really wish I was back in leafy, quiet Brooklyn.

Speaking of Brooklyn, I would do anything to get a place in either of the two new buildings in Brooklyn Heights or Dumbo.

The Pierhouse building right on Brooklyn Bridge Park is going to be AWESOME!! http://www.pierhouseny.com/

Nothing left for under $2.5MM :hot:

http://ny.curbed.com/tags/dock-street-dumbo

The Dock Street building next to the Brooklyn Bridge is also going to be awesome, this one is rentals. 58 units will be going for $500-$1000 as these lucky ### mother####ers who will find something to complain about will win the lottery.

No pricing released, but I would say it is a safe bet a small 2 BR will go for $6k and the bigger 2 BR and if they have 3 BR will go from $7500-$12k.

If I could convince my wife, I'd already be gone... I took her a little while ago to look at some houses, this was my favorite http://i.imgur.com/6e1gRaA.png... It is about 4x the size of my current apt and it has an acre of land (guess how much land I currently have). 5 minutes from the fast ferry to Manhattan, so I could be into the city within 45 total, door to door in about an hour. She doesn't work, so the commute is no issue to her. Her reaction was :X ... The fact that I want to move to the burbs eventually is not something I have kept hidden, my wife has known this about me since day one. Eventually she admits she'll concede, but prob not until our son (and if we have more) are at least 1st or 2nd grade.

that's pretty much every morning at 8:20ish when Jr and I take the F. It's rare when there's room to move- only happens when a second or third train is right behind the first.

and yeah, BL- I used to take the 2/3 downtown from 96th st- woof.

and yep, NV- when we were in our post-fire digs in Stuy town, it was impossible to try and take the L anywhere near 9:00. The wife had to take the kids around- would have to let 3 or 4 trains go by before having any room to get on at 1st Ave.

The picture doesn't do it justice... Couldn't move more than a few inches. This is at 9:45 too, must've somehow been worse at 8:45.
There were no delays on the LIRR today. Wussurbia is is calling your name, guy.
Eventually she admits she'll concede, but prob not until our son (and if we have more) are at least 1st or 2nd grade.
lol- that looks like a picture somebody would create in photoshop, with the assignment: make a suburban looking house.

which is to say that it looks very livable.

how old is your son, FC?

I see worse than that train on a regular sunny day (L train rider).

He'll be 2 at the end of November. We are currently in talks about number 2, and it looks like we might be giving it a go sometime around spring next year.

We currently have a large 2 BR and the kids could share a room for a little while, but eventually we will need to upgrade to a 3 BR with another kid. I'd rather hit the burbs, get a yard, pool, garage, and deal with a commute. If I'm door to door in an hour, that only tacks on about 35 minutes each way, I can live with that if the trade off is 4x the space and fresh suburban air.

We're in a decent sized 2BR with the two kids. It stinks. But we have #1 Son in his own BR with our daughter at first with us and for the last 6 months in area we've carved out for her in the main space (kind of a loft, but not big and cool like a loft). It would be better if they'd both go in his room- but it's a bit too small, and my son is too clumsy to handle a bunkbed.

As soon as the commitment to 3BR happens, you either have to accept an EVil style 3BR (that's really a 1BR that's been carved up so that you have to walk into rooms sideways), pay the $6k+ a month to get a proper 3BR, move to someplace like Roosevelt Island (which almost happened for us) or go to the sticks.

As a sticks kid myself, I don't mind that idea too much- although... ugh. Fresh air, ok, but stale people (for the most part). And my wife would become Revolutionary Road within minutes of moving out there.

Oh- if that's the end game, I would highly recommending getting out there before your son starts K. No point having to deal with NYC DOE if you don't really have to.

I remember when this thread used to be about new bars and great restaurants. That was pretty cool.
:goodposting:

Oh right!

So we had a date night last Friday. I wanted to try out the place that replaced one of our favorite local spots, Peels (on Bowery and 2nd). It's Italian, and I had heard trendy and good. Aside from waiting 1 1/2 hours for a table (they don't take reservations for parties less than 6) after saying it would be 30-40, the food was pedestrian at best. the wife was ready to kill me, since I picked it out. and because... we're married.

It's called Bar Primi... I guess if you were out drinking with friends and wanted food that was more background to the drinks (Italian cocktails... can't think of any?- there's a good reason for that), this would be an *ok* place to go. Especially if you felt the need to be on the Bowery.

We want to redshirt him since he was born at the end of November. Right now he just started a 2's program, it runs 3 days a week, 3 hours a day for the entire school year. It is about $5k, so priced fairly. They offer a 3's program too, which I intend on putting him in. For preK, K, & 1st grade if we are still in the city, I intend on going with private school. By the time he finishes first grade I can then move him over into elementary school, successfully redshirted.
