JFK is a disaster until end of April.

They are redoing all but one runway.

Was delayed two hours flying out and coming back in.
Considering I'm sitting in a ####load of traffic on my way to JFK I wouldn't mind a delay at this point.
"John F Kennedy Intl (KJFK) is currently experiencing departure delays of 31 minutes to 45 minutes (and increasing) due to runway in use."Wish granted?
So it ended up taking about an hour to takeoff yesterday. Always great when after already waiting a while, they say you're about 20th in line to go. They said it was because only one runway was open due to wind, which I know someone else mentioned on their inbound flight a couple days ago (think you said something earlier about cleaning?). Anyway, where did you get that quote from so I can check on it later? I'm scheduled to leave here at 7 and land at 11:20, both NY time. Thanks.Edit: or I could have just clicked the little link in the quote. Ok, back to finding a new wall to soak in this hotel room...
One runway is closed for 6-8 weeks, and when they finish that one, another will be closed for repairs until September. But I have clients in the industry who say those timelines are unrealistic and the closure might last until Thanksgiving/Christmas.

Sounds like 2-4 hour delays are the new normal for JFK.

I don't have any flights on the horizon, but if something comes up unexpectedly, I'd plan to use LGA/EWR.

On my return flight, the captain had the cojones to state that we were caught in the first day of construction.

The only way that I'd fly out of JFK is first thing in the morning before flights get backed up at all.

Damn. I wish I knew about this a month ago. Flying out of JFK a week from tomorrow and back on the 30th.

The arrow points to a place where there is a major felony committed once every 5-6 days... The red line is a path my wife and her friends like to go out at night (at least 4 bars and restaurants in that little strip they like) until 11,12, sometimes 1am... 1-2x a week there is a rape, felony assault, or robbery happening one block away, this concerns me knowing how close it is to my wife at night when she goes out with her girlfriends. FTR, her best friend was once punched in the face and had her phone stolen on Hoyt and Pacific.

It isn't irrational to say I wish this ####hole wasn't located right there. I'm well aware it isn't going anywhere, I'd just feel more comfortable for my family if it was gone, that's it.
Not really much of solution unless you want to move. No way are they moving those projects. Also, think it is insane what some Brownstones are going for right next to those projects.

BL and I basically disagree on everything. One small resolution I've had in 2015 is not letting anything on the internet annoy me, which I've been good with. If he wants to set up a tent and sleeping bag in the middle of a crime riddled housing project, that's fine with me.

Interestingly enough, according to this crime map, Chelsea/Noho/Murray Hill/Sty Town/West Village/LES are all much more dangerous than Spanish Harlem... Hopefully tourists don't rely too heavily on this.

This....

However, I usually like to take a 6am flight and just get it out of the way when I'm leaving NY.

I know there isn't much that can be done... Those projects aren't going anywhere.

It is crazy what the Brownstones directly across the street sell for, really is eye popping. With that being said, it is all relative... Something that might be in the $3-$3.5 range directly surrounding one of those projects is easily $4.5-$5 4 blocks west.

You guys see that wrong way crash this morning? Thats my exit. I heard the choppers all morning. three off duty Linden officers coming back from a strip club Curves. Probably blasted off their minds because there is NO WAY any sober person would get on the West Shore Expwy the wrong way. Its impossible. Thankfully the truck driver they hit is ok. Morons.

Went to Gramercy Tavern last night...

The food and drinks were delicious, however my feedback will be similar to any type of overpriced tasting menu in NYC - I like to feel full after a meal... This is kinda why I like a steakhouse or good restaurant over a snooty upscale place like this. If it wasn't for the bread, drinks, cheese plate, and oysters I ordered, I wouldn't have left full. A 7 course meal will typically fill you up, unless each plate is like 3 bites. The super rich think it is cool to starve people, same thing at uber rich weddings... Personally, not a fan of that style.

I think I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but last month I had a great experience at Saxon + Parole... I would highly recommend checking this place out, good scene, great drinks/food.

The homeless on 32nd st are a disgrace.

Need to start giving out more bus tickets.

I hear California's good to the homeless.

Full Monty on a fella on the walk to work today.

Had a meeting on 50th and 7th yesterday... Walked to Toys R Us afterwards to grab jr some stuff. That store is pretty cool.

On another note, I'd imagine hell resembles Time Square at 5pm.

Can't believe Pearl River is closing.

NYC is replacing everything that makes the city distinctly the city with... CVSs and Citibanks. We are turning into everywhere- the everywhere people are already moving in and probably couldn't be happier to get another Starbucks or Pret a Manger.

My boss (who I love and is from NJ) eats there 3x a week.

A lot of things I understand, but the Pret obsession isn't one of them. It's relatively expensive, portions are small, and everything is pre-made. I know they supposedly donate everything at the end of the day, so the ingredients are fresh, but you're still buying a sandwich that's been sitting in a fridge for 4 hours.

I don't get it either... We walk to lunch together, then we heads into Pret, I go my own route. I went in there once, took a look and left for somewhere else.

it's fresh, fairly diverse menu, and consistently good.

and I don't find it any more expensive than anywhere else... lunch for under $12. where are you guys eating?

I eat there waaaaaaay too much.

Yeah that's the issue. You're spending $8 on a sandwich with about 3 slices of meat. I can go into any generic deli and spend the same amount and get a lot more for it.

I don't like Pret a Manger at all. Some places I go to when I want to keep costs low and/or get something quick (usually takeout and eat at the office) but still have a full stomach and a good meal:

Tuck Shop in Chelsea Market. The vast majority of places in Chelsea Market are expensive but the Tuck Shop is basically this little takeout stand tucked away in the corner where they sell meat pies and a few other things. The pies look small, but they are really filling, surprisingly so. 1 pie is $6 and I am full after eating it. I have tried at least 5 or 6 different kinds and everything has been really good. If this was closer to my office I would eat here several times a week. They also have a location at 68 E 1st St (b/t 1st and 2nd ave). I love this place.

Taim Food truck. They are on 5th Ave and 20th St Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Great falafel. Their falafel sandwich is $6.50.

Minar (Indian food). You don't go here for the décor. It's cafeteria style, but the food is good and you can get a big meal for around $8. They are on 31st b/t Broadway and 5th. I think they also have a location on the upper west or east side.

Kofoo. 23rd b/t 5th and 6th. Good Korean soups and dishes. Primarily takeout, although there are a couple of small tables, and you can get a big meal for around $8. They are in the back of a deli. Its kind of a partnership because it feels like they are separate even though they share the same space.

So it seems like I'll be doing some semi-regular work down on Vesey St. Some days only until noon, others around 5-7pm.

Any recommendation in Tribeca for lunch and/or a good bar?

They used to park by my old office (46th between 5th and 6th). I think they got scared away by the fighting over space from a bunch of other trucks on the block, thanks to a nice courtyard next to the office which drew a lot of foot traffic (plus Moshe's cart is there, and Soom Soom is down the block). But agree that it's very good.

Speaking of my old office...from the front of the building, there's a Pret across the street, and right next to that is Park Italian deli. So I could spend $8 on a puny sandwich at Pret, or the same amount for an enormous Italian sub with fresh mozz and red peppers. No brainer.

I do a lot of work at The Harvard Club and I usually get breakfast at the Park deli. Had a cold cut sandwich there the other day and it was pretty skimpy. The hot food looked great though but the line was really long and I was in a hurry.

That's surprising to me. Did you get it on a hero? I've seen some people get sandwiches on sliced bread so maybe there's a difference there. I also haven't been there in about 6 months now that I'm on 48th/Park.

And what goes on at the Harvard Club (and the other clubs on the block)? I walk by them everyday and for all those different clubs, I don't qualify for any of them!

Corporate events. The have a huge room, visible through the windows on 45th, on the first floor. Very old school. Plus a bunch of modern conference rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors. They opened a roof-top bar but I haven't been up there yet.

eta: That's all I know there. They have restaurants, smoking rooms, libraries, etc. that are for members only. We have to step lightly around them while we're there. Not sure what's up above the 3rd floor, maybe residences.

1996- it was all over, mostly upstairs.

I should rephrase... at my first job, I worked on the Harvard Club renovation (I wasn't the lead). IIRC, it was all upstairs stuff. I remember a secret door from a library along the street, and yeah... maybe some residences/hotelish rooms. new windows along the lot-lines... that kind of thing. it wasn't sexy.

let's get back on target, and ignore pret a manger please. please see the bolded.
I don't think I've ever actually been inside.

We used to play soccer in high school against Pearl River High or whatever their high school is called. That's the only Pearl River I am familiar with.

This is from a point of remove from the old days when the homeless were rampant... but I honestly don't know which I prefer- the homeless or the self-involved 20-something tourist/recent-transplant who doesn't appear to give a #### about anybody else but themselves who runs you down on the sidewalk/subway/bus/everywhere so they can read their phone while holding a coffee and skateboard. At least with the homeless, I felt kinda bad for them- the other people I just want to punch in the nads.

Thought I'd see a bum confrontation today on the 3 train. One old, scrawny dude was giving his spiel when this fat guy gets on the opposite end and immediately breaks into his "excuse me ladies and gentleman...", totally cutting the other guy off. They walked towards each other like in an old west shootout but nothing came of it. The old guy continued his speech when the fat guy was done.

Halal Guys on 6th and 53rd. I like east side better then west side. 6 bucks and I'm stuffed.
I love that place! Me and my guys go there every time we are in NY. Last time I got two red sauces and it was HOT. But really good - next time I'm sticking to one.

That hot sauce is scary spciy, for me at least. I used to work around the block from there and would stink up the office any time I got it. I would find myself drenched in sweat though after consuming all that spice. Yummy.

Another food cart - check out the German food cart on 54th and 5th. It's the best food cart I have ever been to.

Gosh-darned bum shut down Penn Station for 2+ hours yesterday.

Son of a gun was doing hi spiel and the doors closed, so he tried to jump out between cars.

Hope he's spending as much time in the clink as he caused all other people to lose.

5 more weeks of no L train weekends!

F train (our train) was an absolute disaster this weekend.

seems like the MTA didn't think to add F, M or other replacement trains over the weekend to handle the MASSIVE L train crowd. so we ended up the 4 times we took the train, somewhat typical amounts of weekend time (long)- but on packed platforms trying to get into packed cars.

I accidentally got an M this weekend (meant to grab an F.) So I got to make the always fun Essex to Delancey intra-station transfer (hint: last stairwell only, or you'll be going all over the ####### place.) But actually ended up timing it perfectly - never happens - and got home without incident.

I lived on the F (Bergen St) for 8 years. ####ed up weekends is the norm for that line. Can't tell you how many times I couldn't get out of the LES at 3 a.m. on a weekend.

If you can't handle the complexity of choosing six ingredients from a salad bar, get the #### out of this city.

I'm also not sure how someone can successfully put a tie on in the morning and also feel like he needs to ask the poor guy "what salad dressing do you recommend?"
