***New York*** (4 Viewers)

With regards to Blue Water Grill, the space is no longer available. The listing agent wouldn't say whether BWG made a deal to stay or they rented it to someone else. I think they wanted something like $400k+ a month for the space. It will be interesting to see what happens. I hope BWG stays. I have been there many times over the years.

I recommended we go to one of the Mario Batali restaurants, but there are some great ideas and I appreciate everyone's help. I will bring up the others the next time he is in town. He comes to NYC once a month for about a week each time, and we try to get together at least once every trip.

Is something going on today? It sounds like fighter jets have been flying over a couple of times this morning. I didn't see anything because I wasn't looking, but I am working from home today and have the windows open and it's been much louder than any other day. Normally you don't really hear any airplanes in Hoboken.

Beginning of Fleet Week (Ahoy!!!!!11111) would be my guess.

haven't noticed anything mid-town.

we went to one of those "escape the room" things last night that my wife got on groupon. drinks, smoke and friends made this fun... but I can't even begin to say how amazingly bad this thing was. two rooms in a ####ty office in a ####ty office building in K-town that appeared to have been designed and fabricated by my 7yo son and his friends. a couple of painted MDF boxes with magenetic locks tied to "puzzles". the puzzles didn't work and required the person working there to trigger either remotely or in person after we correctly summised the answers. and the puzzles were all nonsensical and only lightly touching on the "lost in air" theme- despite the story being about a plane on the ground.

I can't emphasize how ridiculously bad this was. there were two strangers doing it with us- both of them had done other "escape the room" things before and commented that this one was waaaay worse than anything they'd seen.

still fun hanging with friends.

oh- also went to a rooftop bar in a hotel on 35th and 6th. surprisingly nice.

our friends at the room thing are both gay and laughing about the sailor boys we saw last night, recounting different stories about hook ups during fleet week... one involving a kid named Corky from the midwest who's family gave eachother back rubs.

Forgot about Fleet Week. That makes sense then.

Blue Angels doing their thing.

Big fan of Luke's as their rolls have much less mayo than others. Actually prefer the crab over the lobster but that's a matter of preference. Only issue is I can't get full on one of them and considering the price, I view it more as a luxury than a regular meal.
Yeah, that's my concern with them and Lupa since I never get full on a price fix meal.
Meant to comment on Lupa too...went a couple years ago and while I don't remember the pasta I had, it was as good as you'd expect. We also had a big plate of the Italian meats and they were melt in your mouth good.
Just got back from Lupa. Your description of the meats appetizer is exactly the way I would describe it too - melt in your mouth good. Loved the meal overall, but that meat appetizer is just amazing.

still can't believe FAO Schwartz is closing. totally overpriced, but still fun taking the kids there every now and then... and every time, the Big keyboard.

I agree. It was an iconic NYC store and a fun place to visit, but they are so overpriced it become more of a tourist attraction than a store that sold things. Definitely disappointed to see it go. I wonder what is going to take it's place. It's a huge space and it's going to be very expensive. If they want to keep it to one store, there aren't many that can afford it and fill that space. Plus, many of those stores are already in the area. They might have to break it up and make it more like a mall or something like that.

I remember buying a 5 foot tall stuffed giraffe there for my wife. She had this thing for giraffes. Must have been 15 or so years ago. Our kids loved to sit on the giraffe's back and act like they were riding a bronco.

wife was wondering the same thing.

there's already an apple store right there. too big for yet another bank/drug-dept store/nail salon- those seem to be the only options for NYC over the last 5 years. I think you're right about subdividing it up. and then, *bam*: Citibank, CVS and Bamboo Emerald Spa/nails.

It will be a real shame if it becomes like that, but I think the price per SF will keep it upscale. 5th Ave right by the park is pretty much the most expensive retail real estate in NYC.

I was driving with my wife on Sunday. There were two small Bichon Frise dogs that obviously had escaped from someone's home. We stop at the side of the road and get out to corral the dogs. A couple other cars that noticed the dogs also stopped. Asked if they were ours, if we were OK finding the owners and just being generally helpful and pleasant folks. Called the number on the collars, returned the dogs to a grateful family, nice little community feeling.

Today I walked through Penn Station. The rain drives the homeless underground and under the 32nd st overhangs. Walked by at least a score rooting in garbage cans, sleeping on the floor and sidewalk and picking cigarette butts off the ground. No one stopped, no one was helping. Didn't make me feel great about myself showing much more concern for a couple of dogs than for people.

Wife and I are going to volunteer for http://www.coalitionforthehomeless.org/our-programs/youth/camp-homeward-bound/ this weekend. Maybe my conscience will rest a little easier.

great story and realization, G. and good for you for doing something/anything.

I'm pretty sure that's the organization my wife's cousin used to work for. She had a territory downtown which she was assigned to, and had designated cases where she was following up on these people, trying to track them down, get them into shelters, get them scheduled medical care, etc. Most of them just don't want that kind of help, unfortunately.

That shouldn't dissuade you from trying to help in any way you could, but I just thought a little context could be helpful.

do people still go to Macy's? it's a wonder that place is still around.
Had ppl from Virginia over this weekend.... They HAD TO go to Macys....

I was like Huh???
I enjoy that store... Strictly during the middle of the day, not on weekends. Basically any clothing item you need is in there somewhere.
I guess I need to look again- last few times I've been in there, there's nothing I'd want to buy, clothes-wise. but it's been years. last thing I bought there was our sectional sofa... which looks ok, but ####### sucks in terms of quality.

Things I'd buy there:

- boxers

- socks

- undershirts

- tshirts

- jeans

- casual wear

- jackets

- bathing suits

- some day to day business clothing

- shoes

- kitchen supplies

- Auntie Anne's Pretzels

With the Macy's sales, you can always walk out with good quality at a fair price for any of the above. They also have the best return policy in the world.

If you go on the weekend, it is hell, I agree that is a good reason to avoid.

You can buy $3.00 polo shirts on Canal St. in Chinatown. Guy is there pretty much every day. Near Mott Street.
trying to figure out whether to put quotes around polo or shirts.
They're real "polo shirts". I asked the guy selling them whether they were made by children in China and he said they were made by Seniors in Pasadena. I didn't think to ask at the time whether he was talking about old folks or kids in High School.

Another great deal. For $5.00 you get Halal chicken over rice with free can of soda (corner of Murray and Greenwich Street). I have assurances by the guys in the cart that its Free Range chicken.

can't even buy cotton balls for $3, let alone taking into account the time it would take to spin and weave them into shirts with a logo. nice work.

Be careful with that place. Had it a couple of times (spicy variety) and the pain afterwords/bathroom use was horrible. You have been warned.
Really? I've eaten there a few times and never had an issue... Thought it was pretty tasty.
Only had the down-town place so maybe issue is localized.
Did you enjoy it before the stomach issue?

So you're saying there's a re-sale opportunity here?

Before I put any material money into this venture I will have to discuss this with my financial manager Eminence.

I know somebody who could do some sweet artwork for them too.. printing money.

Stuff is like crack (which explains why I had it a couple times)

Stuff and crack seem a marriage made in heaven for some.

NY folks,

I am visiting NYC for the first time in my life this week. Any locals have easy quick recommendations for food and sights?

Our hotel is at 371 7th Avenue (31st Street), which from the map looks very much in the middle of stuff, but I know very little about NYC.

It's a business trip, so I won't be able to really sight see as much as I would like (working during days) and I don't have my family here. I'll lbe with a couple of co-workers, who will probably just go wherever I end up going. I hope to come back with wife and kid and see many more sights.

I don't know anyone in NYC really (was planning on meeting up with Tupside for this trip - downer), any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I'd even love if someone knew a good place in this area to try to watch the NBA finals game and get some good dinner.

Rick's Cabaret is a block away.

ETA: My go to bar for tourney time is Rattle and Hum on 33rd, but I don't know if it would be too crowded for an NBA game.

Random discussion my wife have had off and on is buying a small studio apartment in the city. Something that will be functional as a place to stay a few days a week or some weekends but would also be a good 10 year investment. Where would you recommend looking? We're thinking like downtown somewhere not really UES or UWS.
