I'm sure I've mentioned it before but Cafe Margon (46th between 6/7) for the best Cuban sandwich in the city. Have other traditional food in serving trays that seems to be loved as well, but I'm never able to resist the sandwich (has it's own separate line if you go in).

I like Sophie's and have been to both of those but find that the quality is going down a bit over the years. Not with the food, but the service and cleanliness.

Especially the one on 45th. Seems a little dingy in there at times.

Any salad guys tried SweetGreen? I'm not a huge salad dude, but I've been dieting and really like them, highly recommend, use the app to avoid the line.

Just checked the site as I haven't seen them up by my office. Messed around with the "create your own" to see how it would compare to what I get from my local place. Ran $5.50 more than what I'd pay.

It reminds me of a place you would see on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.  I chalk it up to being so busy most of the time, but if it affects the food then I won't eat there anymore.

 
The NY DOE is so ####ed... Lets pretend (and we aren't really pretending) that you have an application process for PreK - 85% of children land in a school at one of the top 3 choices on their application. Great, excellent job, now what about the remaining 15% of students?

Would you agree that it is fair that these 15% of students who didn't land in any schools near the top of their list have a higher placement on a waiting list than the ones who already have a guaranteed spot at something in their top 3? NY DOE thinks the waitlists should also be random - even though the 85% are in one of their top 3, they should randomly be in the same pool as the 15% who got the ####### shaft! SO ####### inept in process and theory.

That's clearly dumb. Those not selected should have priority so they can at least get a spot somewhere. Worry about jockeying for position after everyone has a spot.

It is un####ing believable... Our number one choice, there are 15 families who didn't get in and 15 who made it in - statistically speaking, 13 of those 15 that didn't get in have a spot in one of their top 3, yet it is completely possible for the 2 who didn't get any of their top choices to wind up 14 and 15 on the waitlist... On what Earth does that make any sense? This isn't Earth shattering thought process here. 

I'd happily trade my position as being waitlisted for every school on our list, to just have one spot at any of them and remove myself from the field. 

How inept can a system be?

This conversation is why I'm sticking with the private school we are in. It's a coop so "cheap" by NY standards.  All our friends are beating themselves up over the publi schools.  We didn't even apply. The whole thing is bull. I'll work 3 more years to avoid it.  

 
Anyone her ever work in the trade center pre-9/11?  I'm trying to remember the name of a burger/sandwich joint that I THINK was at the corner of Liberty and Church back in the day.  First lunch I ever ate after getting my first job in NYC in 1993 and it was one of the more intimidating experiences of my life at the time.  They basically shouted at you for your order when you got to the counter if you didn't have it at the ready, would snatch your $ out of your hand and SLAM it into the the register, practically throw your change at you, and your food was ready in about 30 seconds.  Does this ring any bells for anyone?

NY DOE has told me to #### off daily for a week now, I'm not gonna stop. My father-in-law is a retired FDNY captain, saved countless lives, lost over half his ladder on 9/11... He sent a note to the chancellor asking for help a week ago, not even a response. I hate these people.

No, I remember the Stage Deli, it wasn't that.  I'll never remember - it was a nondescript place, but they always had cool-sounding food, like the Cyclone Burger and stuff.  God were they fast...and rude.  Oh well, lost to history and I'm sure destroyed on 9/11 if it hadn't already closed down.

Based off of your history, this doesn't surprise me. I don't expect him to yield any influence, but for someone who has risked his life for strangers in this city for almost 40 years, a response would've at least been nice :shrug:

A response is certainly warranted, but preferential treatment is not.  Nor should your badgering the people at the DOE result in a change in your circumstances.  If you think things need to change, then become active in the city government and change things for everyone.  

 
My better half convinced me to look at an apt in Ditmas Park near Kings Theater. It's huge, affordable, great in general, but it would be a 50+ min commute, and the part I'm having a really hard time with is that it's right in the middle of a bright red crime level rectangle. She's 5'1" and a prime target. I pointed this out to her and she told me I'm being ridiculous. I'm worried. Any of you live out there?

 
If it's close to Prospect Park, that's right on the other side of Park Slope? I can't speak to local blocks, but that's high crime area? Is it a doorman building?

EDIT - The apt is about a 10-15min walk south from the SE corner of the park.

Yeah, the northern part starts across from south slope. If you're going counter clockwise around the south end of the park it's Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Prospect Park South, then Ditmas Park. From what I've read, between and around Ocean and Flatbush as you go south from the corner of the park all the way down to Ditmas ave has a decent amount of gang activity.

I'm in Brooklyn Heights... If it is close to the park, probably a safer area, the further you get, the worse it gets. Still not a terrible area, but nothing special.

We both commute to midtown east. It's just pretty tempting when you think that the same apartment dropped in Park Slope would be 3x the price.

I am a big fan of Windsor Terrace as a less expensive alternative to the higher priced areas of Brownstone Brooklyn.  I don't know much about Prospect Park South and Ditmas other than they have some beautiful old homes so not much to add.

 
Anyone done an omakase at a sushi place recently, or have a good recommendation? Looking for something a bit different for our anniversary in a few weeks. We'd be going midweek so figured reservations may not be terrible to come by. 

I know prices can be all over the place (no Masa please), probably looking in the $100-$150/person range. Thanks.

Open in my browser right now  :lmao: . Wife works nearby. Looks like it tops out at $110 for the sushi and sashimi combo. Gets you 16 varieties according to the menu.

At a place like this do you have to sit at the bar to get the omakase menu? I've only seen people doing it at small places that are basically only a sushi bar and don't really have other tables.

No you can get the omakase at the table.  Its outstanding by the way.  I was last there right before masa left but i have heard it is still very good.

You can order almost anything from the table... They don't give you an overwhelming amount of food, but it is damn tasty. 

 
Thanks gents. I'll pull the trigger. We prefer sashimi to sushi so I can see us going with that and then supplementing with some more stuff off the menu. 

I know what's gonna happen though...day of, she'll decide she's not in the mood for sushi and we're gonna end up at Strip House. Not a bad thing.

if your into japanese, there is a really good yakitori place called Totto.  worth it if you havent had legit yakitori.

 
15 East is great, you'll be happy. 

Strip House is a great alternative - Strip House, Wolfgangs, Del Friscos, and Porter House are interchangeable at the top of my favorite Steakhouse list.

I'm a Wolfgangs guy but I've only been to the midtown Strip House location, so it will be good to check that one out if we end up in that direction.

Big fan of Jewel Bako in the East Village.  Very intimate space with great design.  The food is top notch as well.   http://www.jewelbakosushi.com
