i live at the beach in socal and my inlaws live in maui.  other than it being free, the beach won't be a bonus.  i assume it'll be hot as balls.

honestly, it sounds like hell.  my inlaws are the ones suggesting it, i may pawn my kid off on them and go spend the day with my wife :pickle:

Spend the day with your wife.  Unless you're going to The Hamptons, the beaches in NY/NJ are rubbish.  That train ride sounds like hell with kids.  I remember it being brutal without them.

FWIW- I like jersey beaches too, just not the "jersey beach" places.

the train ride isn't bad with kids- once it gets above ground, there's stuff to look at... plus you know to bring things for them to do along the way. and there's always other kids/families on the train heading out there too- my kids end up playing around with the other kids typically.

The beaches in New Jersey are good (just talking about the beaches, not factoring in the people).  However, the people who go to many of the popular beaches ruin it.  The only beaches I will go to in NJ are the private beaches (have a friend who lives on a stretch of private beach).

we go to Ocean Grove. dry town eliminates most of the dopes, plus a beach fee. water is decent as is the beach, but it gets a bit crowded for my liking. major plus for us is that it's walking distance from nj transit stop- easy to get to for carless folk.

The private beach doesn't sound bad.  I guess I shouldn't speak so broadly as the only NJ beaches I've been to have been Spring Lake, Belmar and LBI.  The people definitely lend a huge hand in ruining most NJ beaches for me.

A lot of the Jersey beaches are very nice especially the nicer towns like Spring Lake, Sea Girt, Deal and Bay head and those are just the towns closer to NYC.  Lots of great towns in southern jersey as well.  Places like Seaside Heights, Atlantic city, etc.. give it a bad rap.

Don't recommend NJ Shore if visiting NYC from out of town but great for local families.

Spring lake is a nice town.  LBI and Belmar (especially Belmar) can lend fits into the stereotype.

Agreed.  Spring Lake and Belmar are night and day.   I remember the culture shock when I visited Belmar for the first time.  This was before the Jersey Shore tv show and I wasn't prepared.  Never going back.  Ever.

I have never been there, but I agree about walking distance to NJ transit stop being a huge plus.  It makes it much more accessible for me.  I hate renting a car and dealing with the traffic and parking.  I rarely go to the beach anymore, but when I do I usually take the train and my friend picks me up.

I truly hate Belmar.  Never going back there either.

Cape May, best beach town in NJ for families, not even up for debate.

Congress Hall is great!
I'd love to go to Cape May someday- never been. kinda far, no? we go to my wife's family's beachhouse on the MD shore if we're doing more than a day-trip somewhere.

Cape May is def far, southern tip of NJ. Don't confuse nearby Wildwood and Cape May, different planets, although for a few hours you could go hit the boardwalk to feel good about your family.

No train to Cape May - from the here you're talking roughly 3 hours in the car. Def pricey for a trip in NJ, but such a great family destination. The entire town is just a family resort location, nothing like Belmar/Point Pleasant/Seaside Heights/etc.

thanks.

when we head down to the inlaw's in MD, we train to wilmington and then rent a car from there- 2hrs each leg which breaks it up nicely for the kids, and the car out of wilmington is dirt cheap. but we could likely do something similar to get to cape may... only without a built in baby-sitter and house. but from all accounts, WAY nicer than the oceean city area in MD (even though we don't actually go into OC much).

Now that we are talking beaches, Long Island has a whole host from world class "top ten in the country" hamptons, jones beach for the masses, and some beautiful spots (more course sand and even rock beaches) on the Sound, with great sailing to boot.

thanks.

Ocean City sucks... was great when I was still a frat boy.,Just north though is Rehobeth which is much nicer, smaller scale, higher end/boutiques also... great for families (very gay friendly as well)

rehobeth is great. but not free. OC is sucky (the inlaws are in ocean pines and near assateague, not OC proper) but free. and it's not like we spend our days and nights trolling the redneck riviera boardwalk- lots of time at assateague, swimming pools, etc. and waiting on line for crap food. no paying for house. free.

Cape May is great but just a bit too far from NYC.  I am biased as I have been going to Sea Girt my entire life but think Sea Girt/Spring Lake is one of the best places for families in the NYC area.  Very nice family friendly beaches with non-commercial boardwalks.  With little kids you can also hit up the commercial parts (in small douses) like Pt. Pleasant.  I can get there in an hour and half from my Brooklyn apartment.

Only place that I like as much is the north fork of LI but a little less to do there for little kiddos but it is a whole lot less crowded then any other beach/summer spot in this area.

I personally hate the Hamptons which while beautiful is just way to crowded and not my scene.

Wife and I have been going to the North Fork (Greenport mostly) for a few years now. Really like it. Very quiet, good restaurants and vineyards to check out, easy to get to Shelter Island for a day trip.

Just want to add that under NJ law you can't have any private beaches as it is pubic land so while sometime labelled that way not really true.  Access rights can be tough but beach itself is public.

I agree that the hamptons are the worst.  I live my life around these narcicistic drains on humanity, why the #### would I choose to vacation there.

North fork is definitely more my speed... there are a lot more family activities as well... some of the wineries are family friendly, there are tons of festivals and fairs, as noted downtown greenport is a nice little walkable downtown and the gateway to both forks, Riverhead, has an aquarium and some other kid friendly attractions.  Add working farms, a ferry to shelter island etc and its actually a very nice close to NYC escape.

i may be mistaken, but I believe the issue is that the private property is determined by the mean tide line... hard to have a true public space thats literally under water half the time

I've worked on a couple of Shelter Island homes over the years, but never actually went. We've got friends with a place in Southhold who always "invite" us out- "we'd love to you guys come out sometime". but it never turns into an official "can you come out this weekend" type of specific invitation. and we don't push/ask. our mutual friends jump on every loose invite like that, but they push- and they're a different friends' place every weekend while we aren't.

thanks.

Ocean City, MD is kinda like Wildwood.

Ocean City, NJ on the other hand is another nice place, about 25 minutes north of Cape May - dry town.

That is the general principal but in NJ the stretch of beach above the water is also public land.  Of course it doesn't stop people from fighting that and making access (getting to the strip of public land a problem).

Found this article from the NY Times from a couple of years ago that covers the point pretty well - http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/13/nyregion/in-new-jersey-fights-over-public-access-to-beaches.html

Lots of Hamptons hate here.  I think it's f'n beautiful out there and easy to avoid all the bs.  Partial to East Hampton and Montauk.

Put in an offer for an apt. Seller got 9 offers in 1 week. This is insanity. I just read that the apts going in next to Katz's start at $1.2 million for 650sf. How will anyone be able to afford to live here in 20 years?

They'll keep renting.

if we had to move- and I live across the street from Katz's- we'd have to move far, far away. family of 4- 2/3BR  in Manhattan and most of Brooklyn are waaaay off our budget at this point.

Yeah it's one thing to come up with a few grand a month for rent. Quite another for the average family, even here, to come up with a few hundred grand in cash to put down.

problem is, even finding a spot to rent is impossible at this point.

it aint much better out here in the burbs.  25 mins outside nyc and we have the same ridiculous bidding wars for any place on a train line.

We've rented the same 1br spot in Prospect Heights for 7 years. We're our landlord's only tenant and he's raised our rent about $200 total during that time. If we rented a 2br in the area that wasn't a hole in the ground our rent would double. Buying seems like the better alternative but I'm really not so sure any more.

:lmao:    Floppo doing the lord's work here

babysitting question.  any thoughts on acquiring one for an evening?  :no homer:  we were thinking it'd be nice for the 2 sets of parents to be able to go out together one night.  right now, we were planning on rotating a night out for each, but it'd be pretty cool to do something together.

floppo, you cool if we drop of 3 kids?  my niece is a touch moody, my nephew & daughter are awesome and really easy going.

I was walking home from the gym and up the block I see these 4 buffoon girls sprinting out of a Thai restaurant, they obviously dined and dashed. As I walk by the restaurant, I see the table closest to the window with a bunch of empty martini glasses and two workers standing at the table. When I get to the corner I see and hear these idiots standing there and arguing. I decided to mind my business and walk home, I live around the block. I'm on my roof looking down now and I can make out that one of these girls left her bag there :lmao:  they keep arguing until one of them goes back, as she walks in a cop pulls up. She was just taken out in cuffs  :lmao:

Had a wonderful trip to NYC with the girlfriend.  Did soooooo much in a week, but had a blast.  All the big tourist stops, but also some time just walking around Midtown, Upper West Side, SoHo, TriBeCa.  Averaged about 10 miles of walking a day.  Hill Country BBQ was awesome, thanks for the suggestion.  Took the suggestion from @fantasycurse42 after walking the Brooklyn Bridge and ate pizza at Grimaldi's in Brooklyn Bridge Park (it was excellent).  Had a great experience at an Italian restaurant in TriBeCa called ROC.  The highlights were Statue of Liberty with Pedestal access, Top of the Rock as the sun went down and then at night, seeing Starry Night at the MoMA, Yankees Game (well for me at least), The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time (best play I've ever seen, got row 12 center tickets for Saturday night from the TKTS booth at South Seaport).

Both forks are awesome in their own ways, but If I had to choose one for a weekend or longer, would have to go Hamptons/Montauk. North fork is more like a day trip, maybe an overnighter. From Stony Brook, that is.

Have any of you guys been in Gramercy Park?  I mean the actual park.  What's it like?  Is it nice enough where if you were thinking about an apartment that would have a key to the park, it would be a good incentive to get that apartment?

I've been.  It's a nice little park about a block long.  Lots of kids peddling weed and coke in there tho so be careful.

So frustrating. Just got back last night. Like you need 8 pictures of you on the brooklyn bridge with the east river in the background.

Sophie's Cuban Cuisine is really good for lunch.  There is one on 45th between 5th and 6th and one on Lexington and 40th (around there).
