Spend the day with your wife. Unless you're going to The Hamptons, the beaches in NY/NJ are rubbish. That train ride sounds like hell with kids. I remember it being brutal without them.i live at the beach in socal and my inlaws live in maui. other than it being free, the beach won't be a bonus. i assume it'll be hot as balls.
honestly, it sounds like hell. my inlaws are the ones suggesting it, i may pawn my kid off on them and go spend the day with my wife
FWIW- I like jersey beaches too, just not the "jersey beach" places.
we go to Ocean Grove. dry town eliminates most of the dopes, plus a beach fee. water is decent as is the beach, but it gets a bit crowded for my liking. major plus for us is that it's walking distance from nj transit stop- easy to get to for carless folk.
The private beach doesn't sound bad. I guess I shouldn't speak so broadly as the only NJ beaches I've been to have been Spring Lake, Belmar and LBI. The people definitely lend a huge hand in ruining most NJ beaches for me.
A lot of the Jersey beaches are very nice especially the nicer towns like Spring Lake, Sea Girt, Deal and Bay head and those are just the towns closer to NYC. Lots of great towns in southern jersey as well. Places like Seaside Heights, Atlantic city, etc.. give it a bad rap.
Spring lake is a nice town. LBI and Belmar (especially Belmar) can lend fits into the stereotype.
Agreed. Spring Lake and Belmar are night and day. I remember the culture shock when I visited Belmar for the first time. This was before the Jersey Shore tv show and I wasn't prepared. Never going back. Ever.
I have never been there, but I agree about walking distance to NJ transit stop being a huge plus. It makes it much more accessible for me. I hate renting a car and dealing with the traffic and parking. I rarely go to the beach anymore, but when I do I usually take the train and my friend picks me up.

Ocean City sucks... was great when I was still a frat boy.,Just north though is Rehobeth which is much nicer, smaller scale, higher end/boutiques also... great for families (very gay friendly as well)
rehobeth is great. but not free. OC is sucky (the inlaws are in ocean pines and near assateague, not OC proper) but free. and it's not like we spend our days and nights trolling the redneck riviera boardwalk- lots of time at assateague, swimming pools, etc. and waiting on line for crap food. no paying for house. free.
Cape May is great but just a bit too far from NYC. I am biased as I have been going to Sea Girt my entire life but think Sea Girt/Spring Lake is one of the best places for families in the NYC area. Very nice family friendly beaches with non-commercial boardwalks. With little kids you can also hit up the commercial parts (in small douses) like Pt. Pleasant. I can get there in an hour and half from my Brooklyn apartment.fantasycurse42 said:

That is the general principal but in NJ the stretch of beach above the water is also public land. Of course it doesn't stop people from fighting that and making access (getting to the strip of public land a problem).
if we had to move- and I live across the street from Katz's- we'd have to move far, far away. family of 4- 2/3BR in Manhattan and most of Brooklyn are waaaay off our budget at this point.
We've rented the same 1br spot in Prospect Heights for 7 years. We're our landlord's only tenant and he's raised our rent about $200 total during that time. If we rented a 2br in the area that wasn't a hole in the ground our rent would double. Buying seems like the better alternative but I'm really not so sure any more.
I was only there a few days but I have to say, after 1 day, I was pissed at the tourists that did whatever they want walking around. I know the rules and played by them. Now get the frick out of my way doosh bags.

they keep arguing until one of them goes back, as she walks in a cop pulls up. She was just taken out in cuffs 
I've been. It's a nice little park about a block long. Lots of kids peddling weed and coke in there tho so be careful.
So frustrating. Just got back last night.
