My son and I did the Omakase at Suhsi of Gari about a year ago and it is still one of the top five meals of my life. It was absolutely amazing - I couldn't imagine the food being any better than it was. Every dish was better than the last. We got to the point where we would look at each other and just laugh because it was just so awesome.
I'm way late, but was going to say this.Big fan of Jewel Bako in the East Village. Very intimate space with great design. The food is top notch as well. http://www.jewelbakosushi.com

Never been and due to this review, prob won't go. I'd lose my #### in this situation. Too many good places to chose from to wait an hour when you have reservations.I'm way late, but was going to say this.
most everybody loves this place.
we, on the other hand, are part of the small group of people who shared similar experiences (based on yelp reviews)- despite our reservation, they kept us waiting for over an hour.. .without even offering us a drink, kind words, appetizer nothing. got to the point where the manager (I think owner) started even avoiding eye-contact with me and finally avoiding me in general. it was basically- too bad for you and your reservation. but these other people will get to sit right now because they- THEY have reservations.
food was good to really good, but #### them.
that was Melampo in soho (thompson or sullivan)- kicked you out if you didn't wait on line just right. kicked you out if tried to order something that wasn't exactly as stated on the menu. kicked you out for... well- you know. Alidoro is supposedly a related sandwich spot 2 doors down from my office. good- but not as good as I remember Melampo... but maybe it was the fear that brought out the flavor.Sandwich Nazi?
If you're actually going to attend all of those spots where it makes financial sense, sure why not. It will likely be hot as balls so having most of your activities be inside is probably a good idea.I am taking the wife and kids to NYC in mid July. Wife is looking at city pass tickets that gives you entrance to the major tourist spots. $116 for adults and $92 for kids. Anyone here buy these or recommend something else? Thanks!
I'm glad you've had a smooth DOE process. FC- any update on #1 son and school?
Floppinha got her GT test score- so thank god gets to go to K at her brother's pretty great school (supposedly raised over 1mil in PTA funds this year- pretty sure thanks to my 2x offerings of $100). we had a moment where I thought she didn't get the score... hadn't until that moment realized how emotionally invested I was in her going there and how FCed I'd be if she didn't. went on a seriously deep, but short nose-dive about it... thankfully got the email within a few minutes of the false negative. very happy she's not an idjit.
Reading this I am glad I am in the zone for a very good public school, which my oldest got in, and don't have to wade through all this. Sounds awful and stressful.I'm glad you've had a smooth DOE process. Ours not so much.
Like all parents we tested for the off chance of Anderson or NEST. Stoopid Little Sammy comes back with a 98. Thanks son. I dutifully list the citiwides anyway and the 3 D3s G&T which besides for the 166 suck (we end up getting placed in 163 which is the middle one), but am perfectly happy (resigned) to sending the ruffian to the local zoned school 452.
Flash forward to the end of May. The minutes of the local CEC zoning meeting come out and our dopey Principal has registered his support for moving 452 into a building that is being vacated by 191 (a persistently dangerous school) since they are moving to a new building in the low 60's and West End (this would be basically a mile from us with no busing option). No notice except he talked with the the SLT and President of the PTA and got their support. Well, you can expect the resulting uproar. I went to 2 CEC meetings and lets just say the organization of the DOE when they want to rubber stamp something is truly impressive. Let's just say I'll be totally stunned if they don't move. I'll leave out the conjecture on what will happen, but needless to say the student body won't be transitioning with the Principal.
So, while all this is going on, we still have our 163 placement. After watching the 452 fiasco unfold we eventually take in last Friday. On Monday, they start to clear the Waitlists. So we end up calling TAG. Parent co-ordinator says come on in. Apparently they're not following the DOE waitlist policy (keep in mind we're 403 on Anderson's WL, so there's no chance we'd normally get into TAG), and just letting you come in an register if you have a 97+. We're also #1 on 166s WL now (who are actually following the DOE's WL policy), so we'll probably get in there and end up going there (the East Harlem commute...bus is probably 45+ minutes and neighborhood are more than a little drag).
So net-net we'll come out ok, but the DOE is hell-bent at screwing over a lot of people. Makes me understand why so many people go private. Instead of a fixing a bad school, they'd rather sacrifice a good school for appearances.
i'll be there 7/9-7/14. i bought them. seemed pretty likely that we'll hit most of them. saves a little money.I am taking the wife and kids to NYC in mid July. As Sammy notes, this could change... I'm more worried about overcrowding becoming an issue with the school we're zoned to when the time comes. We've got about 5 high rise building currently being built in this zone.Reading this I am glad I am in the zone for a very good public school, which my oldest got in, and don't have to wade through all this. Sounds awful and stressful.
Yeah TAG is the one in East Harlem, so we won't be telling that fact to the misses. Having poked around the school 2 of the past three days (I forgot the brith certificate and had to go back to pick it up), they handle the safety issue well. The uniform issue is the bigger one as the little one doesn't wear long pants besides sweats. I did love the classrooms though. Much better than 452s or 163s and the kindergarteners had written full page "essays", so the education is obviously top-notch.this has been anything but smooth- but it's over.
both kids got 99s (floppinho got it 3 freaking years in a row, but could never win the lottery for a seat), but tbh, even though nest is down the street and anderson would be fantastic, we were VERY happy to just send Floppinha to 11 with her big brother. and of course she didn't win the lottery for the others either, so... thanks DOE.
I just read about the situation in D3 in the NYT and thought of you... hoping you weren't caught in the middle. ugh. On the surface, seems like a good idea- but the ramifications are obviously much deeper.
is TAG the one across town or in Queens (STEM?)? within a day or two of when I toured the one on the east side for Floppinho, somebody was brutally murdered either on the same block or around the corner... IIRC, middle of the day. kinda put a damper on that school for us. IIRC, it also has uniforms- not the biggest negative, but neither of us dug the idea. the one in Queens looked nice, but was too far for us and I didn't like the elevated subway rumbling by right next to the classrooms constantly. The one in Brooklyn looked amazing to me- but an hour away (and the wrong direction for my commute) was too much. funny- we got unsolcited calls from two of the district schools offering seats to my son for K. they must get a list of 98/99s and just reach out.
fwiw- we transferred from one G&T school to another... which is available even district-to-district. so if you end up not liking TAG, there are options.
and last commentary for now- main reason we went with GT was that our son was not a kid who did well with more chaotic environments/kids. his pre school had a few kids who were adhd/aspergers-spectrum who, although good kids, were a handful for the teachers and other students. most of the kids were fine dealing with them, but they really threw floppinho off his game. we figured that the G&T test was more about a 4yo's ability to sit and engage a strange adult quietly and with focus for 45mins-1hr than it was about some kind of test of gifts or talents. and THOSE were the kids we thought would suit young Floppinho better than the more random assortment of gen ed kids. so far, it's held up to be true... especially for the boys, who are later developers anyways.
I live in an overcrowded zone but my son got in which will basically get my daughters into the school since in zone with a sibling in the school is the highest priority (of course they shrunk my zone a couple of years ago which also helps). Any of your kids enter the system yet since if some are in the odds improve. As Sammy notes, this could change... I'm more worried about overcrowding becoming an issue with the school we're zoned to when the time comes. We've got about 5 high rise building currently being built in this zone.
DOE is the suck!
Once you have a kid in the school you are grandfathered in for any younger sibs and they can't kick you out.As Sammy notes, this could change... I think (hope) we'll ultimately get into 166 in the fall, but I'd rather it was now so I wouldn't have to deal with this BS.
If we don't get into 166, my guess is we ultimately rent a school district for a year (my guess is 234, since it's right next to the misses work and I'd rather be in District 2 if we are spending the money). Hell, we may even do that now since it looks like they are still taking kids that are moving into it.

That's our assessment as well. The parent's coordinator gave a little tour and it seemed like most of the art's/enrichment's stuff happens in separate arts/music rooms. Definitely a different approach, but I'm more of a science/math guy, so I don't really notice what's missing arts-wise (which is ironic since the little guy loves his music and I have no idea what to do with him). We also saw the K/1st "graduation" ceremony and I loved that they made the all kids get up and give a little speech. As a noted introvert who hates people and public speaking, that was a big plus especially after one of the kids started crying and the teacher came up and gave the kid a big huge and helped him through it.234 is the one in Tribeca, IIRC? heard it's been a wait-list, even for kids in zone.
we are more in the progressive trajectory with our approach to learnin'- reading your comments about TAG reminds me that I really loved the classrooms too (really big relative to EVil schools), but was oddly a little turned off by the K essays, only because I wasn't seeing as much art and enrichment as I would have liked to go along with it back then (part of what I really loved about Anderson). But I had no doubts that if he survived the trip, he'd be getting a great education there. and the kids all seemed nice and well behaved roaming around the school (versus some bratty behaviour witnessed at Anderson and nest and definitely around the LES EVil)

234 actually didn't have a WL this year for whatever reason, but yeah I know they generally do. I was looking at their website and they seem to be taking kids if they move in the district over the summer. I do sort of wonder if Sammyinho would keep his mouth shut though or if they'd even care. More than anything though, it'd get us into District 2 and out of whatever's going to happen in 3. If he's going to have a 25-30 minute commute it may as well be with mommy.
I haven't seen it, but I have friends who saw Matilda with their kids and the absolutely loved it. Rent from the airport. Not worth the extra hassle. Return it and cab into town.My fam will be flying into LGA in late July and renting a car so we can drive up to Cooperstown. Upon arriving back in NYC, we will be staying in mid-town for a couple of nights prior to flying back out of LGA. I'd like to return the rental car immediately upon arriving back in NYC. Should I rent the car at LGA and return it there (meaning I have to drive to the airport and cab/rideshare back to mid-town), or is there someplace else (off-airport) I should consider renting the car from that would be easy to get to/from? TIA.
not worth the hassle or extra cost of renting in the city- airports are cheaper.Rent from the airport. Not worth the extra hassle. Return it and cab into town.
oh... galli. used to eat there a lot, but it closed. good chicken parm.tokyo
A few years ago, a guy who was my next door neighbor growing up in NJ jumped off the GG bridge. I'm sure you know in SF they have people specifically trained to talk down jumpers...this man who encountered my friend (i use that word lightly as I lost touch with him over the years) had saved dozens of potential jumpers but lost him and one other. Really sad and tremendous work these people do.ugh... just saw a newsbit in the daily news online about a girl jumping off the GW bridge... the 7th fatality this year. I had no idea this was going on :( . I grew up on the north side of the GG bridge in SF- knew at least one person who jumped there... just a sad business. and being familiar with both bridges- they're both surprisingly open at the hand rail- easy enough to go over.
We did the Columbus location and it was fantastic. I've never been to the others.sushi of gari, is any one location better than another?
never had meat sweats. In lighter news, went to Wolfgang's last night with a bunch of college buddies and like clockwork, was wide awake at 2am with the meat/salt sweats as usual.
Helicopter or sea planeI almost don't believe you about the beach... Every time I've been there in the summer it was a sht show.
I'm thinking about heading up to Beacon this weekend for a little r&r. Is it worth it to rent a car or should we just take the train?
#### shows on the Upper East Side too!I almost don't believe you about the beach... Every time I've been there in the summer it was a sht show.
NEW YORK -- Police say the man seen on surveillance video grabbing a woman and shoving a bag of feces down her pants early this week has been arrested.
The NYPD tells CBS New York he is 42 years old and has charges pending.
Police also say the incident was the second of that type that day in Manhattan's Upper East Side.
It wasn't clear whether the suspect would also be charged in connection with the second incident.
Area residents were repulsed by the vile acts.
"It's very scary," said Carole Kaplan. "I have to have my wits about me all the time."
Kaplan is avoiding using her cellphone as she walks after learning of the attack caught on video Monday evening.
Police say the 27-year-old woman was talking on her cell phone while walking down the street when the man came up from behind, grabbed her waist, shoved the bag in her pants and then grabbed her buttocks.
The man pulled off his rubber gloves and threw them into the street as he stomped away.
The victim sought help at a nearby parking garage. The attendant told the New York Daily News the woman was so shaken she couldn't even dial 911.
"I think it's the most traumatic thing, and I don't even know how anybody gets over something like that," Kaplan said. "It's just horrific."
"That's really gross," added Tara Pairan of the Upper East Side.
It's unknown if the suspect said anything during the incident.
Sources told CBS New York they believe the suspect targeted the woman at random.
Police said the same suspect is also believed to be involved in a second incident earlier in the day Monday.
In that one, a 33-year-old woman was walking along a Manhattan street when the suspect threw excrement at her.
The woman was hit in the face and torso, police said.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said at a news conference that the suspect is believed to be homeless.
"Really disgusting attacks," he said. "We think it's the same male."
Lenny Burns, who is homeless, didn't mince words when talking about the suspect.
"He's a whack job!" Burns told CBS New York.
