literally around the corner from me- one of the many spots I was referencing earlier.I don't dine out for Italian much but when I do it's normally at Supper in the East Village. Not an old school red sauce joint but I enjoy the food and atmosphere. You could also completely sell out and just kick it at Eataly

Soho and Union Square are your safest bets, have the most going on and centrally located. West Village, Gramercy, East Village and Tribeca are also great choices. Upper East and West are options but a bit bland. You really can't lose anywhere in Manhattan but I'd avoid midtown as most areas lack that neighborhood feel. It's all fairly safe. I'd recommend staying between 2nd ave and 9th ave for subway purposes. Have fun Brony!

This is very-NYC specific, but the UWS elementary zoning fight has hit the bigtime:

Little Sammyinho is in the G&T program in 166 for next year. We live in 452's current zone (in the same building with crazy Caroline who made the stupid Schwab House posting though I don't know that I would call the building upscale). To show you how things change. I now want 452 moved since 166 would now pick up some of 9's zone (more wealthier families) and the building would revert to 87 (which is where it was to begin with 6 years ago).
Keep in mind all this is to divvy up the Amsterdam housing project which is at the furthest southern part of the district.
Just another aside everything south of 70th on the Hudson is a luxury Trump building, most currently zoned to 199. The apartments in those buildings are already taking a hit in price with the Trump name (it doesn't help that the 1BR and 2BR are small and the buildings are out of the way) and this won't help as they'll get put with 191 going forward.

I recently changed my avatar to a picture of the World Trade Center - v1 so that may be part of the mix-up. It's been years since I have updated that list but I was actually thinking about adding to it a few weeks ago. I know there are several I would add. I am open to other suggestions.
If you guys want to add to the list, please give me the name of the restaurant and a link to the yelp page so people can follow that to the restaurant's website and other info and I will make some edits to that list.

New York is expensive in general, but if you are going to spend money on something it's worth it to spend it on transportation from and back to the airport. I think you maybe save something like $40 by taking public transportation so it's not going to make much of a difference on your money situation.

Il Mulino is good, but not that spectacular IMO. If you want Italian and that's your price range, check out Carbone. It's overpriced just like Il Mulino, but the food is top notch.

I might be a contrarian with this recommendation, but consider the Financial District. Not touristy, every subway in NYC at Fulton St, quiet after 6pm, close to Brooklyn (Brooklyn Bridge Park is a must IMO with family), and an overall cool area. Also close to Battery Park/Statue of Liberty.

I tried that once and will never do it again. Save the pain and take a cab. If you're trying to save cash, take one of those group buses for $12.

I could see it. Nothing much to do in the area, but its certainly easy to get around from there. Plus, it's pretty eerie on Sundays.

Why Sandy Hook? I know quite a lot about the area...
Assuming you're taking a ferry and Sandy Hook looks convenient from there? Correct me if I'm wrong...
Anyways, if this is the case, I'd recommend going south instead of north from the ferry. Check out Sea Bright, much better IMO. If you head a little further south, Avon and Belmar are also nice.
Although with the family Id prob do Avon over Belmar, but prob Sea Bright over both. Long Branch is really a cool little beach/town too. It was kinda ####ty 20 years ago, but they've done a great job building it up.

ok- just got back.
being able to take the ferry (from Wall St, pier 11) and 30 minutes later be at Sandy Hook itself was pretty awesome. rangers and internet research said to go to Beach D for families... so we waited for the shuttle bus. not a long wait, but long enough in the heat. Beach D was packed- like, Coney Island packed, with dueling music boom boxes, towels/umbrellas on top of each other and way too much garbage (no garbage cans). you literally had to make wide circumnavigations around the density of camped out people just to get to the water. beach was meh (lots of shells/stones so not clean and soft, water was nice to get into on a hot day, not too wavey (but no flotation devices allowed for little ones, which sucked) but oddly green/brown and colder than last weekend's trip to Ocean Grove.
we decided to skip out a little earlier for the 3-something ferry instead of the 5-something ferry, given the crowd of people waiting for the shuttle buses when we got off the ferry. so we got back on line and waited for the shuttle bus... about 20 minutes and the line was huge- barely got on the bus. then we got out to wait for the ferry- another 30 or so minutes in the backing sun and again, the line was already huge to get on the ferry.
if it wasn't so hot, the waiting might not have been so bad... but I'm not a fan of waiting in lines like this regardless. very cool to be able to take an easy (but relatively pricey) ferry-ride, very cool to able to see the city from the beach, but overall the experience was not one we'll likely repeat. other beaches we prefer with nicer water, beach, crowds and amenities. I think being a hostage to the shuttle bus and then the ferry were a bit much for us. (caveat- this might have been better at the walkable North Beach which I heard was also less crowded)

I didn't want to rain on your parade, but now that it's over and you won't be returning, I'll say it less gently... Sandy Hook kinda stinks. Of all the beaches in NJ, that's near the bottom of my list in almost all categories.
I've prob been to the jersey shore 1000x, and the beaches that are all 10-30 minutes south of there are soooooo much better. Sea Bright is really nice, as is Long Branch (two beach 2-3 miles north of Ocean Grove), Ocean Grove (as you mentioned), and Avon/Bradley/Belmar (3 beaches immediately south of Ocean Grove).
Ferry makes for an expensive day (family of 4 prob in $150 range round trip), but you could Uber from the ferry to any of these beaches for $12-$25 bucks. As an alternative, you could also rent a car for the day for like $50-$60 bucks... Factoring tolls/gas/parking, I'd say your around $100 all-in, but sacrificing the convenience of the ferry.
Hope your next trip out to that area is a little better. I'm confident to say that NJ has some of the best beaches on the east coast if you know what you're looking for.
For a family vacation, I can't recommend Cape May highly enough, that place is family paradise IMO.

Can you guys be more specific on what the issue is with doing this? We've been in Manhattan for 5 days and been taking the subway with no issues. Is it the bus part of the trip? What about taking the M as close as possible to the airport and then doing Uber?
Absolutely love the city - first time visiting and it's incredible. Was going to post some trip highlights when I get back - this thread and My GB Kutta were a big help in our planning.

How much gear so you have? Schlepping luggage from train to bus to terminal is a pain. If I recall there are quite few stairs. It's also slow as frak.

3 suitcases that I will check. I'm a block from the M line - I'm traveling on a Tueaday - based on what I've seen I'm not too worried about getting on the train. Coming out of the subway will be a PITA. Do the buses have luggage areas underneath? That would suck if not. What about when they drop you at the terminal - is baggage check not there? Will be first time flying out of LGA so not sure where it is.

It's a city bus so no, I don't believe there is a luggage compartment. Bite the bulletin, take a cab from your curb to curb side check. Thank us later!

Thanks Nick. Maybe I'll get Uber for the wife and I and the luggage and send the kids in the train for life experience.
