Grace Under Pressure

Times Square, eh. Dirty again, unfortunately.Pulled the trigger on Columbus Day trip to NYC for fun with the kids. Plenty of time to work out a rough itinerary, but I'd welcome some thoughts on where to stay as I look into airBNB type places. My kids are 8 and 10. Plan to be tourists for the weekend, hitting the usual beats (SOL, Broadway show, Times Square) and food experiences.
I've been to Manhattan several times, but have mostly stayed in Mid-town hotels for work. What neighborhoods would you recommend to look at where we can have easy access to subway, feel comfortable walking down the street to bars, cafes and kids are generally comfortable? We will be staying 4 nights and would rather be among locals than in mega hotel chain.
My sense is that Gramercy or East Village would be good, but I'm open to ideas. I think I'd prefer to stay in Manhattan than trying to save a buck.
I'd be looking to be close to CPS and 5th Ave with kids, imo.
