Hey Westchesterguys! or anyone familiar with the area.

We're starting to look into places to retire and although somewhere out west like Wyoming or Idaho are being considered, we're thinking that Westchester or north should be in the running too. Don't know that much about it although we've been around a bit. Looking for a house around 800k or so, little property, little privacy, close to a nice town with some  restaurants and stores.

What's nice?

Had a nice couple days in the City - Mrs. Koya's birthday and free hotel stay as a present from my parents (Indigo Chelsea (though its more like nomad adjacent?). I like the location actually, but the property is really tired, its ready for a revamp. Nice suite though in terms of huge space and overlooks 28th with a lot of light and air.

Man this neighborhood was worthless even a few years ago it seemed. Was super convenient though... between the new hotels and their respective bars, a couple decent spots and super easy to get down to Village or up to Theatre.

Got in Friday around 8-9 pm and grabbed a late bit and couple drinks at Lupulo, which is one short block away.

Next AM, wandered to Stumptown Coffee (whoa, strong, good though) at the ACE and chilled in their lobby for a bit.  Wife needed to get new glasses and opt test so we hit up Lenscrafters (an odd Koya wife thing... we have Lenscrafters all over the Island, honestly with better selections more often than not, but this is the second time shes had the whole thing done randomly in the city.

Dinner was at Gotham - awesome as always. Pricey as ####. But worth it. Really exceptional but not over the top service, too.

Breakfast was at Friedman's near Penn... OMG no kidding one of the best breakfasts Ive had for quite a while. Straight forward breakfast/brunch faire, and maybe the best hash brown potatoes Ive had in ages.

We grabbed a couple drinks at the Breslin bar / ACE hotel - not too stupidly priced but more importantly AWESOME french fries. Super ####### awesome, highly recommended.

So I read all of the uber posts within here. We arrive tomorrow at LGA a little after 5:00 (fingers crossed) and will simply cab it to the apt on 11th in the East Village.

For departure on Sat morning is it fairly easy to hail a cab on ave c back to the airport? I have an app "cab sense" that supposedly directs you to the closest good cab cruising street.

I've never used UBER yet, it's not even available in my little FL hicktown. I do get a $20 credit for the first use and the estimate from the apt to the airport is only $19-$39 which seems like a great deal. Any UBER thoughts? Our flight departs at 9:55am. What time would you schedule the pickup?

for the ride back, you can also try one of the livery cab services... 333-3333, 666-6666, 777-7777. call ahead and check prices.

dunno if we were specific enough before- if you want recs for food/activies (even for things to avoid), please keep checking in.

and like I said before- if you're really at C and 11th, the projects are right there... shouldn't be an issue, but make sure you're aware of your surroundings whenever you come home.

have fun!

Well, so far we plan on hoofing it to the 911 memorial on Wed. I already purchased the museum tix. Maybe check out the new World Trade Center and pop into the new Eataly after (we've been to the Flatiron location and thought it was great). Stomp on Wed nite and then a bite at Veselka (love borscht). Couple of interesting bars nearby our apt- Death and Company and The Wayland.

We'll walk and do the High Line one day and possibly check out Colicchio and Sons (its been many moons since I've had a good steak tartare) in Chelsea.

Walk to Houston and do Katz for lunch one day (pastrami attack). Esperanto is on the list along with Supper unless we see something more inviting. The Mrs is on a vegan kick while I have never strayed from full carnivorism, so we are looking to please both of us. I'm also always ok with a slice off the street.

Of course Thur is opening NFL so that will take care of Thur nite with maybe some late nite imbibing.

For  Uber, don't schedule a pickup. If you're in the village and hail it, it would be there within 3 minutes; just install the app beforehand. From the village, I'd give about 45 minutes or so to get out to LGA. Dunno how much buffer you feel comfortable with. From the airport to Manhattan, all of the cabs are on fixed price.
FWIW- 20-45 to LGA... depending on time of day.

are the cabs to LGA also on fixed price? I don't normally do yellow taxi there, and also very rarely fly out from there... but I thought it was a standard metered fare, not pre-set.

Stomp is awesome... glad it's still in the EVil, in spite of the rent problem with the theater.

wife took Floppinho to see Blue Man last week when the BIL and his kids were in town. Jr went to the blue school here in NYC and was in the same class, best buds with one of the original/creator blue man's kids- great people and still friends... but this is the first time he's gone to see the show. in spite of hitting the wall typically at 9:30pm, he comes running into the apt at 10:30 after seeing it... "that. was. the. most. amazing. thing.... EVER!". I was sorry to miss out- I"ve seen it a at least 3 or 4 times since it opened, and love it every time.

we also saw Lion King over the weekend- 3rd row center, somehow (bought the tickets cheap/discount but a long time ago). fun show- kids, of course went crazy over it. will be hard to explain to 5yo floppinha that not every show is going to be right in the performers' faces like that.

oh... with floppinha heading to K, the wife serendipitously got a call from an old consulting gig to come back... which she is on Monday. first time back at work since our daughter was born- should be interesting to see how it goes with the kids and us. and extra interesting to see how that extra money works. been a long 5 years scraping by... hopefully this will make a difference.

Looks like I'm up in November for the Champions Classic at MSG. Can't wait to be one of the biggest yokels in the city.

To update. We arrived on time and hit the taxi line. About a half hour wait but the fare from LGA to 11th east was only$36 + tip.

We unpacked in our quite spacious and pleasing ground floor flat.

Went to the corner store, then liquor store and loaded up on a few staples (fruit and mixers for vodka). You guys sure pay the price, or at least I did!

Headed down to Dorian Gray on 4th between B & A. Oh boy, at 9:00 someone flipped the babe magnet switch and within minutes the place filled up with smoking hotties all to play their progressive trivia. I mean, really, really strong looking crowd. I come from the land of newlyweds and nearlydeads and this was a great time out. It's still early by ny standards but after a long travel day we're back at the crib- and I know this town is not even sleepy and it's a Tues.

To answer the route to 911 I think we'll just meander through St. Marks to Broadway and angle on down. We're both in good shape and walk/bike alot anyway. We are contemplating a citibike too...

If you have time and energy, you should walk it.

cut through Tompkins sq park, St marks for a block and then zig zag down and over, imo. Bowery down, cut over through nolita to soho, wind your way down and over though tribeca.

Towers of light are up... Pretty amazing under a cloudy sky.

15 ####### years. :(
Going to a big 9/11 memorial this weekend with FIL.

He was a Captain in the FDNY for 30 years. Luckily he was off 9/11 and lives on the outskirts of Brooklyn. Guy went racing to the city, but he was a good distance away and didn't make it there in time, otherwise I prob would've never gotten to meet him... Awesome guy, named my first son after him since he had 3 daughters and never had a son of his own. Poor guy lost over half his ladder, pretty tough for a Captain to deal with.

Cosign.  Used to take a similar route when I lived in Tribeca and worked in the East Village.  I miss those long NYC walks.

The walk was great, only took about 90 minutes. Walked through the restaurant supply blocks. Walked through the lighting stores blocks.

We were both blown away by the museum experience- it is by far the best museum experience I've ever witnessed. Jaw dropping to walk through the wreckage areas underground and the exhibitions were extremely informative. The video segments of live news while it happened brings you back to the moment. Also, I found the hijackings themselves fascinating. I'll never ##### again about security measures at the airport.

When you exit you'll be proud to be an American and feel a little more love for your fellow countrymen...and I must add you will also be really pissed at the terrorists.

Everyone was misty...

-----------------------

Back to our E-Vill crawls-- lunch after the museum was the new Eataly in the WTC #4 on the third floor. Everything was really good. We have a great Italian market/grocery in St. Pete - Mazzaros. Alot of the same goods only ridiculously affordable.

We went down to Wall St, took pics of the Charging Bull. It's funny, there is a huge crowd at the Bulls head taking pics but the real antics are back by the enormous Bull Balls. One chick after another would jump down and have their pic took touching the balls!

Federal Hall was unbelievable. The first American Treasury vault was there with about $220M locked away in gold and silver coins. They also have great bathrooms that nobody seems to know about- I was a loner in the can while a million others out on the street wondered where to pee?

We hoofed it back to E-Vill with a stop for a pint at Donnybrook on Clinton St, blasting AC was welcomed. Then we picked up our Stomp tix at the box office. I had a coupon I found online that reduced our tickets from $101 to $49 each and also saved by not using Ticketmaster and their gouging fees. We're going tomorrow nite.

Stopped in at the Taqueria on St. Marks and sucked down several Tecates while wifey worked the margs, excellent homemade chips and salsa with vivid kick. We made friends with the very cool bartender and she poured with free will.

Tompkins Park mosey led us to a 4 piece jazz band that was great around 5:00. Then we had to watch the dogs frolic in their free run and I even tossed a tennis spitball that created a canine frenzy.

Naps came easily.

This evening we are following the TaQ bartender's suggestion of sushi at Decibel. We were intrigued by the sake bar. I know it's cool to have your sake chilled these days but I'm a traditional "nuke my sake" guy. Looking for the killer unagi roll- and I know that the poor eel is endangered in Japan, but that's what they get for tasting so good- tonite I add to the extinction.

Q- where's a good spot where you can see the lights from 911 in the E-Vill?

Love(d) that place.  It's been a few years, and Mrs. Koya didn't have a great experience when we went so, well, been a while.

She was not a huge fan of the sushi, which is her thing. I'm a non sushi guy and have always really liked the place.

Mr Purple on Ludlow, kinda trendy rooftop if that's your thing.

Actually drank a ton of sake at lunch with my boss today, he left early and dumped a little extra work on me :kicksrock:

One other thing I feel compelled to mention is the street herb generosity. Twice now I've been strolling along 11th and these cool guys/gals are just out burning on the sidewalk. I smile and stop walking (wifey is not into it and moves along) and fatties are just passed to me with no questions asked. Of course I make a little small talk and then thank them and move along...I love this city!

lol... that has literally never happened to me. although, tbh- I don't stop... still have a lot of the old days in me where if you looked at somebody remotely wrong, #### was going to go down. also don't want it to turn into this:

Clint: You said, "Someone's tokin' some reefer."
Mike: No, I meant somewhere I smell some pot, you know? It was just an observation.
Clint: Oh, an observation, huh? Well who the hell are you, man? Isaac ####### Newton?

but yeah- the city has gone green in more ways that one. I smell and see it ALL the time and not just in the EVil- all over the city (less so up in the hood where most of my projects are on the ParkAve upper east). that said, and talking about the old days... I don't have anybody trying to sell it to me on the street/parks any more. probably just look too old. :kicksrock:

Not judging your life choices but this is exactly how you get the herpes.

Anyone get invisalign in the nyc area that didn't cost an absurd amount? My midtown dentist wants about $7k+ (molds, shave tooth, ongoing treatment, final retainer) after insurance.

Now a lotta folks, certainly us professional weed smokers... I mean, weed smokers who are professionals/businessmen... are moving toward vape pens and all.  It's kinda a shame.

There was always that sense of cosmic camaraderie when I'd be walking down the street, and somewhere in the distance I'd here the "Ping Ping Rattling Ping" of a batty being dropped in the street.  That little metal cylinder hitting the ground is a sound like no other - and the few times I could recognize who did the dropping, it would be some other professional dude in a suit, just like me.

this was the view the other, cloudier night... crazy looking.
I see the top 30 or so stories and the spire of the Trade Center right before I get home every night (when it's clear at least).

My place is down by the water, about 25 miles as the crow flies from downtown, and at the top of the 200 ft hill that begins my descent, the street parts the trees with perfect alignment to the Tower.  It had been the twin towers you saw from there (although I was not living at the location pre-9-11) - a pretty cool reminder that this bucolic suburban street, trees and forestation leading down to a large park and beach, is still on the doorstep, and very much part of the gravity that is NYC.

I'm 58, whitey, clean shaven, slightly long hair but not out of control, dressed very casual, no tats. These folks are considerably younger than me but easily accept me in the club.

Today we hit The Strand Bookstore, McSorleys so I can say I've been to NY's oldest Irish tavern, Veselka for lunch and then Mai-Tais at the Shrunken Head with a bartender named Meow.

naptime zzzzzz...

Laughing at the mental picture I'm getting of some random tourist with a big smile approaching a group of hipsters smoking a joint.

you've done more of NYC in the last 2 days than I have in the last 2 years here.

but first day of school today!

floppinha started K today at #1 son's school... and the wife is starting an old consulting gig on monday. OLD- she hasn't worked at all since Floppinha was born (5+ years)... the extra income is going to be really helpful. (understatement).

and I exaggerate...

Labor day weekend we went out to Playland (surprisingly empty- no lines) and saw Lion King with the kids (3rd row center- the wife got the tickets through some crazy NYC ID disounter half a year ago... amazing seats). pretty banner weekend.

Ok, for those interested. Our E-Vill trek is wrapping up. Last nite we had an outstanding experience at Death & Co. for drinks/eats, we showed up at 6:00 and we were the second party sat at the bar. By 6:30 they were on a wait. It is dark and intimate. Creative drinks with a lab atmosphere. Reviews say expensive, blah blah blah. We each had two wild drinks and ate really tasty small plates. Bill was $89 + tip which in this town is not bad at all. I wanted to go back tonite but was outvoted by the owner of the jewels.

On to Stomp. Nice percussion show. It reminded me of the Blue Men on a smaller scale. We've seen Blue Men in Orlando and Chicago. Stomp at the Orpheum is a small, up close show that does rock, we enjoyed it.

Made it to The Grafton to see the second half of the game. I LIKE this place. The Guinness is expertly drawn and everyone is very friendly.

Today we hoofed it to the Highline via the lowline (12 st). Nice walk through the gardens with great views both sides of the city and the river. The construction noise reminded me of David Lynch's Eraserhead- bang, bang, pound, pound. Then on to Chelsea Market for lunch. This was something I wish we had skipped. Whatev, walked back to our new adopted neighborhood of the E-Vill and found a little place with some phenom micros- Proletariat on St. Marks. On the way we went back to the Strand bookstore because I wanted to see the rare books on the third floor...bring deep pockets if you are a buyer. I bought again down in the basement (half price of Kindle). Deals on Chuck Klosterman, my new fav author.

Headed back to the Sunshine State very early tomorrow. This has been a great visit and we seem to be honing in on neighborhoods to our liking. Our goal is to become Sunbirds to rent for a month or two in the fall to break up the monotony of old school FL- which is my roots and I will always live most of the time.

I'm taking you guys word that my first UBER ride will be there in 3 minutes tomorrow am to get us to LGA. Thank you to all for your suggestions, they've all been right on!

Nice.  Cool you went to Death.  Great drinks and atmosphere. My buddy Dave opened that up around 10 years ago.  He's done quite well with it.

Proletariat is a good joint and gets all the hype but there is actually a place right across the street with a bigger selection and better prices. That block makes for a nice craft brew crawl.

Dude, all I can say is...

LIKE A MUTHA####IN BOSS.

Well done.

FWIW, I believe Smorgusburg is the new Chelsea Market.

From what I understand the Proletariat beer bar on St. Marks is also owned by the same people,  a huge coincidence to us.

* not that I'm #####ing about sburg.  Place has some good ####### food options.  And just the right amount of [euroaccent] Barroookleen Keeeetch [/euroaccent]
