give their kid a porn or hyper-violent video/book/game for their bday. here's the walking dead, lil skippy- it's a comic book! or a joint.

we've only just begun discussing this with our oldest when he was 8... and really moreso this september (at 9) surrounding the 15th anniversary. our 5yo is oblivious- because giving her that knowledge is the kind of decision for us, her parents, to make when we think it's appropriate for her to learn.

great googly moogly. the stupidity and obliviousness of people is just incredible.

I'd seriously consider July.  Yes, it may be hot, it's summer.

That said, end of June mid week may still have some business activity and between weddings and all that, pricing may drop some after the fourth. Touristy downside, imo, would be limited if you are after the fourth but before August, especially mid week.

 
Sounds really bizarre. But I'd suggest tourists installing pokemon go. There's all sorts of pokemon stops that you get items for, multiple per block lots of times. And they're always linked to something of interest, a building or monument or just random interesting thing. Even having lived here for years it points out things I never noticed.

I don't know, but I expected it to last past the Paw Patrol, Dinosaur Train, ABCMouse stage.  Seven or eight would have been nice.

I don't know for sure that floppinho didn't hear about it at school from other kids- but we didn't talk about it in earnest until this summer at 8/9. felt like he was old enough to understand and process it. didn't seem like it was old info either

Buddy, a loveable carnivorous T-Rex, is mistakenly born into a brood a Pterodactyls.  Hi-jinx ensues as he travels through time with Buddy, Tiny, Don, and Mrs. Pterodactyl on the Dinosaur Train to visit their dinosaur friends through the different ages.  Dr. Scott the Paleontologist pops up to explain something about the age or dinosaur they visited.

My 4.5 year old has had many encounters at school about bad people coming in with guns. Usually it's the older kids who bring in the info and then they have to address it. Sucks.  

 
BTW, I love that they closed 33rd at MSG to cars and made it a pedestrian plaza.  Not sure if it's just a pop up, hopefully not.  They have some crappy tables and all, but it was a nice extension of the oh so meh Pensky (REALLY NEW YORK? That's all we get?) through the street.  Even saw this adorable little girl tooling around on her scooter thing, her dad close by but not needing to be right on her and all.  God my lifetime experience at the point of transit as a LI B&Ter have been quite literally, miserable.  It's far better than it used to be, but god what a craphole historically.  Hope their redo doesn't suck.

our kids school shows video and discusses 9/11 with the 1st grade classes

 
Flying out to NYC for the first time evah tomorrow (Thursday) with my wife on her business trip. Staying in Greenwich Village. Will have 1/2 the day on Friday (until noon) with no plans. Suggestions?

Forecast as of now is for heavy showers, which means it will pour, but intermittently... prob want some inside and outside options.

As it's your first time, think if theres anything (incl the touristy stuff) you've heard is quintessential NYC ...

Outdoor you cam literally just walk around for a couple-few hours in the Village, So-Ho and over to the Highline, or hit the brooklyn bridge, walk over and cab back.  Best way to experience NY. If the weather doesn't cooperate it may be good to check out the 9-11 memorial but not sure the details myself as to inside vs outside. Of course there are tons of museums, art, history, science, museum of television, sex museum and tons of other options.

Any preferences so we can help narrow it down?

 
HOLY ####... ####'s hitting the political fan.

News reports say Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano has been arrested on corruption. Rumor is he is now going to flip to avoid a lot more similar charges... flop on DEBLASIO.

They both have been involved in shady, likely pay for play deals by a restaurant owner/businessman who contributed heavily to both campaigns, Herradura Singh. Mrs. Koya actually worked for Singh for two miserable months. Not only is this no surprise, but its been rumored that this shoe would drop for well over a year now.

Two weeks before election day, though neither guy is running, could have serious implications in local and state races. Gotta help the NY Dems have a chance to regain power in the senate as races that had been slightly contested but likely Republican could very well swing. Barely contested races may now actually be in play.

Wonder when/if the noose tightens on the Gov, with some of his closest confidants getting hit with charges over the past couple of months.

seems early to me. especially living in NYC where you live amongst the type of tall buildings that got hit. what prompted the class to discuss it? just making them aware of the day?

My neighborhood (maspeth) has been fighting plans to convert a hotel into a homeless shelter and as a result a lot of things have come out about how DeBlasio operates. It has exposed a lot of shady dealings going on.

Good...I have no love for DeBlasio.  The faster he's gone for city politics the better.  Cuomo too for that matter.

yeah, i have no idea. we got a note from school saying "please be aware that we will be showing the children a 9/11 video and discussing the events of that day".

:shrug:

1st grade. my kid had no idea. she asked some really vague questions about planes and if we could fly somewhere one day. that was about it. she knew my brother lived there when it happened so she asked if he saw it.. and that was the end of her interest.

The 5-year old flies 3-4 times a year so he's well versed in "landing on the water" (try explaining the emergency procedures card in the seatback in front of you to a 3 year old...but daddy, planes don't land on water).  "Landing in a building" didn't go as well.

meh. don't like it. it's like telling same age kids about sandyhook... just not a thing they should have to have in their brains at this point IMO.

i wasn't exactly thrilled but figured at that age she isn't really going to comprehend it anyways. she's a smart kid and all but i don't think conceptually the whole deal made a whole lot of sense so she decided it wasn't worth worrying about.

my kid heard about it the first time, and immediately is looking up at the buildings... and the airplanes... freaking out. for a long time. at least now he's old enough- and it was the right time to have the "there are bad people out there" talk. at 6? no way.

the bombing in NYC a month ago... the school is basically around the corner from where it happened- lots of families in the immediate neighborhood... they wisely (IMO) left the discussion about the bombing to the families.

I know we're on the same side here... and I see your point about being removed from nyc making it more abstract. just still feel that at 6, this kind of info is too much, too heavy to come from somebody other than the parents... even in the abstract. 

 
was just trying to write something about a crazy client, but she's worn me out so much I didn't know where to start. daughter of a 1% of the 1% (folks are really nice) who started the project by wordlessly and no-apologies flaking on meeting after meeting (with partners of several companies at each) and calls us in the middle of the night because her apt is "too hot- it's a disaster!". we've gone through her getting married, separated (and on walk-about during construction when we needed answers), reconciled, and now separated again (husband was great) and is clearly medicated- because at any time we'll get a crazy "this is a disaster" email, which we of course have to jump through hoops to resolve because of her dad, but then show up and there is no disaster and there is nothing to even fix. and this #### is causing intense stress in the office- because we don't want to disappoint the dad- which I then try not to take home with me. 

bleh. not a big deal... but has been requesting I get there to meet with our lighting designer to 'fix' something- which I just did, only to be told at the door that she doesn't want anybody to visit her today. citibiked up, citibiked back down. wasted an hour. at least she let me know.

I agree, but here is the thing I'm noticing with my 4.5 year old: he hears about this stuff anyway.  On the playgrounds, in the street.  I'm amazed at the #### that comes out of his mouth on a daily basis in regards to current events.

kids are going to hear stuff on the street/playground before they're ready. then they ask at home- and we discuss or dodge and weave.

being lectured about it at school... not into that at this age.

 
I was on the citibike yesterday heading uptown to pick up Jr at school of rock. weekends are an absolute ####-show around the bikelanes- joggers, wrong-way bikers, day-tripping citibikers, tourists... typical. I'm on 1st around 70th and this guy strolls out into the bikelane midblock without looking- dragging his toddler behind him leaving me not enough time to stop. I scream "careful! lookout!" as I swerve around... tiki barber and his kid. wife says I should've hit him and sued for damages. she's right. but he's so freaking handome.. and gave an apologetic smile and "sorry" I went by... and he won me a lot of FF loot over the years.

Tiki won me a ton of games as well, but lost all my respect with the grandstanding his last year and first year in retirement. What a joy to win the greatest SB ever the year after he left.

Shoulda run him down, but not the kid... would have done the kid a favor.
