***New York*** (7 Viewers)

somebody's always going to be the youngest and oldest, regardless of the date.

the issue for me is that NYC seems alone in using the calendar year I think. seems like most places use school year, which makes people who move in or out a bit out of sorts.
With school year instead of calendar year, this largely becomes a non-issue.  The vast, vast majority of sophomores will turn 16 before their junior year starts.  The vast, vast majority of graduating seniors will turn 18 before they start college.  The majority will turn 18 before they graduate high school (summer birthdays excepted).

I just can't imagine 1/3 of the students not meeting those benchmarks in a given year.  Odd choice NYC has made.

Agree it just is the City is off with the rest of the country.  I am sorry but you really shouldn't be going away to college when you are 17.

There is an Italian festival in Hoboken along the waterfront near the PATH station this weekend.  I am going to go over there later to get some food.  Oddly, it sounds like they have been setting off fireworks at various points in the afternoon.  I would imagine you can't see them too well since its so sunny out.

I heard the fireworks at night uptown, and thankfully it didn't wake up my daughter. But my buddy downtown had his son woken up at 10pm by them. #######s.

Still a great joint for a burger or chili dog but their taps are and have always been a joke. This is a booze bar.  I'm no longer a regular because of my work move but two of the bartenders will still wrangle me a stool if I come in for a Friday happy hour.

Fun fact: I share a birthday with the urinals and when I went to the centennial celebration they poured at least a bottle of Jameson shots for me and my group on the house.

Fun fact 2: much to the frustration of the staff, the owner is a right wing whack job. He regularly posts hand written political diatribes around the bar attacking NY and national liberals. He LOVES Sarah Palin but not so much Trump. The liberals who drink there don't care. Best bar in the hood by far.

Any recommendations on stores in Manhattan, aside from Bed Bath and Beyond or Macys, to buy sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, and other bed and bath things like that?

Century 21 and those two. Maybe Bloomies or crate and barrel. We've done Ikea for the kids. last towel set I bought was through Gilt... The colors were slightly off from what I thought they'd be- screwed everything up.

Otherwise, stuff for clients... Where I can't afford a hand towel. I can look into those for you if you want.

I am curious about the non-department store and non-chain store options, although if you can't afford it then I doubt I can either.

Dude, the speciality stores will be 3x the department stores and superb ripoff.

I have seen an ad all over the subways for some luxury bedding at a super discount, I've wanted to try it and the name completely escapes me right now.

Okay NYC parents... Let's see how many neighborhood parents are going to hate me - you receive an invitation to a birthday party at Chuck E Cheese (for the purpose of this exercise, assume the location is no more than 10-20 blocks from your house)... What are your thoughts?

My wife says I'm pissing off other parents (which might be true, but I don't care all that much, since it is about my son and his birthday), am I?

are you what?

I'm not getting your question here- in what way are you pissing off other parents?

places like chuck e, buster whatever, etc, make my skin crawl... but the kids seem to like them, so if if the kid was invited, sure

Annoying/angering parents... I guess the point my wife is making is an invitation to Chuck E Cheese will illicit feelings like the bold.

just asked the interiors teams... gave me a   ... ABC carpet has great variety. a little pricey, but not killer, and often have sales. that said- too expensive for me... but a normal human being being payed a normal human being wage, sure.

so they'd be annoyed or angered at having their kid get invited to a bday party at Chuck E Cheese... and it's somewhat in the neighborhood? like I said- place makes my skin crawl, but of course I'd take my kid and wouldn't be annoyed or angered in the slightest at the family making the invitation- honestly wouldn't cross my mind; it's a kid's birthday. I do remember when my oldest was little, we got an invite to a chuck e cheese... but it was like in faraway Queens, not close by. THAT part was annoying- but not angering- just made an excuse and rsvped no.

Not a parent and haven't been to Chuck E Cheese since I was a kid, but I am with El Floppo - This is about the kids.  If they like it then the parents should understand and it shouldn't be a problem, especially since it's in the neighborhood.

Brooklinen, that's the one I've seen all over the subways. Somebody buy it and write a review :)

Their slogan:

Luxury Bedding, Underpriced.

Yeah...I wouldn't have a problem going.  The only downside to the arcades is parents sort of have to pay attention if they are say under 6.  That's the bigger downside.  One of our sons did a party at Bowlmor which you would think would be horrendous.  It was fine (kids entertained themselves while bowling, they didn't care they were destroying the alleys, and I had an expensive beer), but once we went to the arcade it went downhill especially since they blow through the money so fast.

That being said, I'm a glutton and taking my son and 6 of his closest friends to the NYCFC soccer match for his birthday.

So, this was a major concern of mine since the overwhelming majority of the kids will be in the 4-6 range. The deal was sealed when I realized the system this place has.

One way in and one way out, turnstile in, turnstile out with an employee there at all times. When you come in, an invisible stamp with a matching number is placed on the inside part of your wrist and the wrist of the child you came with. When exiting with a child, they will shine a light on your wrist and your child's wrist to make sure the numbers match, so you can only leave with the child you came with.

The top package which is $10 more per child than the bottom package is unlimited games, so I think that covers them blowing through funds.

IIRC, the main problem at these places are the idiot families who let their kids act like #######s. even though busy, I don't remember being concerned for my kid's safety- other than from the other idiot families already inside the place.

is your wife more concerned about the safety/kids wandering off/snatched part?

She is concerned about everything; safety, icky CEC feeling, bad food, etc... I'm not, kids will have a blast.

The place wasn't crowded when I checked it out yesterday morning around 1130, but at least 1/3 of the peeps there were Hasidic Jews... My wife wants to do it on Saturday instead of a Sunday bc they won't be there on Saturdays (I'm a Jew, so I have some added leeway when talking about these people, FYI)... Issue is, Saturday time slots are 10-12 when Sunday would be 11-1.

11-1 is much better than the 10-12 IMO.

As a funny anecdote, most of the Hasidic Jewish children weren't even playing games, they were just sitting there playing with the controllers, but had not inserted money :lmao:  I counted this 4x while waiting with my son to play a game.

STUPID JEWS!*

I'm a yid too, so likewise get to make fun of those chuckleheads with impunity.

What is the appeal of Chuck E Cheese vs. other restaurants that you can maybe get a room and set up decorations, have actor or whatever to entertain the kids, etc?

games and prizes. and that horrific chuck e cheese character. and apparently plenty of hasidics.

I thought all the brooklyn people did birthdays at the bounce-U place.

middle school applications and research is fun.

at least in District 2 there are actually a bunch of choices that don't suck. feels like at this point the only stress is about finding the right one for floppinho.

I woke up to news there is a tropical storm coming in tonight? The storm earlier this week blew all the plants off my stoop and broke a bunch of pots so I guess I need to  spend some time securing the property.

"Rain bomb", I'm told.

Thought it was coming in sooner than tonight?

Read in Newsday that it will be this afternoon and through the evening.

Read they from Dallas where it should hit 78 after we received a little rain and saw FREEZING temps dip into the 40s here.

:coffee:

Eta: They did just take down the big umbrellas above the couches at the pool, though.

Went to Gracie Mansion for their annual trick or treat event... but 4/5 of it was rained out. Long trip up for 5 minutes of stuff. Then Huff it back down for Once Upon A Drag at nyus skirball. Nothing like some queens doing a drag Cinderella for the kids to brighten up a stormy day.

any trick or treating plans?

the kids usually hit up chelsea (IIRC, 21st and 22nd sts between 7th and 8th... or maybe 8th and 9th... or further) or village (9th or 10th between 5th and 6th- they shut the block down to traffic). I havent gone near the parade in 20+ years... but I know floppinho (10) will be interested soon.

Kids are doing the Cobble Hill Parade, then they're on a mission to collect the candies - my neighborhood is as solid as it gets in NYC for trick or treating.

Can't wait to get home and pillage the goods.

ETA: Governor's Island is real cool for the kids on Halloween weekend. They have trick or treating, hayrides, and a bunch of stuff - we had a good time out there Saturday.

Just had a bum (or a trick or treater in a great bum costume) come into Metro Cafe and beg from people waiting in line.
IDK what Giuliani did with the bums, but it's time something else was done. The proliferation of the homeless is a issue to me.
Maybe we'll get a cold spell that will convince the bums to leave for warmer climes, but it's more likely that my commute will just be through Bumsylvania Station.

Hope everyone and those close are safe - just read about four shot dead downtown?

:sadbanana:
Shot? Seems like the news is saying a truck drove on a bike path. He pulled a fake weapon and was shot by police. Not sure what is going on exactly.

jeebus.

looks like a truck went into the bikelane (VERY distinct from west st/west-side hwy) at stuyvesant high school... 2 dead, driver in custody.

eta: eyewitness saying guy drove onto bikelane.... at 3:05pm- right when school lets out. :(  ... then crashed, jumped out and started firing gun.

NBC news said simulated weapon (paintball gun or bb gun) not sure if that is accurate

Ugh, awful regardless what weapons were used.  F'n society man.
Horrible for sure- there are 6 dead. It's a tragedy. In terms of weapons, I think there is a big distinction between a real weapon and a paintbull gun. If it was a simulated weapon as NBC said, it's probably not terrorism but someone mentally ill with a death wish.

This is such an unchecked issue in our nation.  It seems to be at the heart of so many of these instances.

I'm not seeing 6 confirmed... "up to 6" is what I've seen... fwiw.

the wife just called- just picked up the kids to go trick or treating. :(  ####### horrible.
