ENJOYING THIS HEAT WAVE, FELLAS? ? supposed to top off at a rather balmy 27 degrees today

im'ma be hittin' the roof soon for some rays (will post pics in Furley's "shorts" thread) ...

yeah, it's literally "calm before the storm" territory - gonna be an absolute ####### mess here next few days
bomb cyclone, yo!

but it really is amazing the difference between 20s and teens, single digits. stuff just hurts in those colder temps... 20s are manageable.

might lace 'em up tonight and go running with friends. old, fat and stupid don't sit well. I can at least remedy one of those.

One of my favorite post NYE traditions is seeing how far away from Times Square I can spot confetti on the street/sidewalks. The cold might prevent me from walking around too much but saw some on 47th and Madison today.

This weather depresses me and then I realize its only the beginning of January so we are in for 3 more months of this
i hear ya, man ... and we've actually been very fortunate the past few/five years or so, as the winters have been quite manageable - much better than i remember back in the day as a kid, that's for damn sure - matter of fact, i think that's the last time i recall a five day run of bitter cold akin to the one we just endured last week.

one of the memes i recall when i was making the rounds on FB was along the lines of "this cold makes my face hurt, i wanna move somewhere that won't hurt my face"  :lmao:

but, yeah ... the extremities numb up toot sweet when we dip into the single digits ?

Heading out there with the family for vacation today, as the kids don’t go back to school until Tuesday. First time in NYC for the kids, we are staying near Times Square. Can’t wait for Friday, when we have tickets to take the shuttle to the Statue of Liberty.....    we’re from Colorado, so we have the right kinds of clothes for it, but we’ve been prepping them for the weather, and that 15 in NYC feels much different than 15 in CO...

A show might be interesting.  Whats the best (cheapest) way to get tickets?
are you here yet/still? sorry I didn't get back to you- TKTS locations have day-of cheap tickets available... probably won't have bad lines in this cold. there's another option- maybe online- but my brain isn't letting me remember.

Probably going to work out of home Th/Fri.  My youngest wants to go to the City Saturday though for her birthday (to the Museum of Nat. Hist.).  Not looking forward to coming into the city when the high will be 11 degrees.

Big fan of the phrase "bomb cyclone" - I'll set the O/U on NYC totals at a whopping 3.5 inches after the bomb cyclone comes through.

Supposed to get a snowstorm tomorrow so flight might be delayed.

Friday and Saturday are going to be brutal here, a couple of the worst days we've had in a long time, and that's without having 6 or so inches of snow to potentially deal with.

I'd root for a flight cancellation and a refund. Sorry GB.

How old are the kids?

I would be hard pressed to find a more beautiful place than New York City when it is snowing.
The swirling flakes buffeted by iconic skyscrapers create immaculate sculptures in the air that vanish in a moment.

I would be hard pressed to find an uglier place that New York City after it snows.
Grey sludge oozes between your toes as rivers cascade north to south down the avenues, just waiting to swallow you up to your shin.

Isnt the phrase more about the hurricane force winds than the snow totals?
NOR'EASTER DOWN?

seriously, why in the flyin' fiddler's #### do we need a shiny new moniker for an off season hurricane type weather thingy?  meteorologist i am not, but - what the #### is the diff?

I don't have the slightest clue. I assumed the term was coined to increase ratings when they're expecting minimal snowfall.
I think what differentiates this newly minted phrase is the drastic drop in barometric pressure, which then provides an opportunity for things to get real bad in a hurry... especially in regard to dangerous winds.

Perhaps it's because a blizzard needs both a certain amount of wind AND a certain amount of snow and this might not meet the definition for the latter?

But yes, ratings is the underlying reason, I'd wager.

The kids are 14 and 11, so old enough to bundle up and deal with it. I think I’d rather have the brutal cold and wind than torrential rain. We can duck into stores to warm up, but getting wet just sucks and stays with you. Bummer we won’t be able to stroll around as much as I’d like, will take the subway as often as possible, even if it’s just one stop.

Winter rain is the WORST weather condition in nyc, particularly if it follows a day after 6 inches of snow.

Ok at that age they'll be good. Sorry if anything I said bummed you out. It will be a memorable experience one way or the other.

Was just walking back after lunch... Remembered that NYC dog owners know the magic secret that snow means dog poo magically disappears so they don't have to pick it up and deal with it.

Leaving frozen poo slurped for the rest of us to avoid the next day

few of my Jersey stops informed me that they will be closing down 'til Monday

i'm up in Hoboken right now, and it has the feel of an early spring day (swing by the Wilton House and have a pop wif me :banned: ) - Jersey City? not so much. that downtown area tries real hard, but lacks a vibe.

heading back soon, with talk of preemptive school closures coming from the gf - and her case load has been canceled for Thurs/Fri.

Wow you're in deep. Granted not a ton is open during the week but how did you end up there?

Shame it's not Friday when I WFH.

I agree. Nothing worse than a driving 35 degree rain.  Snow you can bundle up, push it off your shoulders, deal with it.  Rain soaks you through, ruins everything, and there's is no escaping it, like the Beatnuts

been a haunt of mine since the late 80s - first time in was 10/89, i had just returned from San Francisco, and was over there seeing a gf of mine who lived on 2nd & Bloomfield. convenient to the PATH, so i popped my ### in for a few ...  was watching the WS up in there, and BOOM, the quake hit. i missed it by roughly 36 hours.  was kinda bummed because i really fell in love with SFO - so i drank myself into a right stupor amidst the rummies and barflies - passed out there, and woke up down in the Jackson pjs - some dude named Manny put me up for the night.

so i always return, first (and last) stop in Jersey for me.

Hell of a story. Good on you.

On way to lga right now.  Cutting out a day early to miss snomageddon.

Good trip? Kids have fun?
They did.  Quicker than hoped, we really just had yesterday evening and today.  We saw Rockefeller & lights @ Sacks 5th last night and has dome Korean BBQ.  Today was WTC, observation @ WTCOne, and then Times Square, followed by Ramen noodles and trip to airport.

Would have liked some more time, but it is what it is.  Prefer not to get caught up in the hassle of rescheduling, booking hotel rooms, etc if we got caught in something nasty.

CYCLONE BOMB

Quick, but full trip. Glad you guys had fun...smart to get out early (unless this is just another media grab)

My car didn't have a rear camera. ####, didn't even have blind spot sensors!

Amazing we survived.
You try to tell the young people today that... and they won't believe you.

just back from morning run ... colder than a witches ###, but winds only 10+ mph atm, and nary a trace of precip

was kinda hoping that if this Bomb Diggity Cyclops was gonna do damage that most of it would've been in the books already - got a ton of booze on the ready here - not gonna get ####faced for a routine winter dusting.   schools are closed, my gf had her case load cancelled - the two of them already have plans for a big get together at a friend's house a couple blocks away (the kids/moms from daughter's dance academy).

Pops gonna get Popped if it  slams us :suds:

Just made a quick walk to Rite Aid in Hoboken before it got much worse. It's pretty bad. A couple inches already and the wind is really intense.

can't really tell what is actual snowfall vs what is swirling about - it's definitely coming down, but it appears that at least half of the mix is being blown from already fallen flakes

and those gusts are killer - gotta be hitting 40 per, at least

Been tracking this one, could actually be a real storm with 6-10.
Apparently they are calling for up to 18in for nassau?

I do miss breaking out El Jeepo and wailing up and down the twisty hills of the North Shore with severe prejudice
