A few items worthy of note:

1) Mewelde Moore is the 3rd down back.

2) WRs Limas Sweed and Dallas Baker will battle for the #4 WR spot.

3) Max Starks will come in occassionally in 3 TE sets.

4) Mendenhall will return kicks, Moore will return punts. Holmes may return punts on occassion as well.

5) In preseason there were several times when Roethlisberger lined up as a WR and the ball was snapped directly to the RB. Tomlin said not to look for that formation during the regular season.

6) The Steelers currently have 7 defensive lineman on the roster. Tomlin said it is unlikely that all 7 would be active though.

7) LB Larry Foote is healthy and will start although Timmons will be rotated in and heavily utilized

My favorite. If they're not going to use it in the regualr season, why did they run it pre-season? And why did they practice it so that they could run it just in the pre-season? If I'm an NFL head coach, I'm now thinking, "Sure, you won't run it. Like I'm going to believe you dedicated practice time to something just for the pre-season. You'd better believe I'm preparing my team for it." He has effectively forced everyone they play to gameplan for it.

1) Not surprising at all2) I think Baker has looked better than Sweed, at least in the preseason games. Sweed hasn't impressed me.3) I can't believe they are paying him as much as they are. What a waste.4) Why can't they seem to ever find good returners?5) I agree that this is very strange. But anything that takes up practice/prep time for the opponent is a good thing.6) Probably a good idea to carry an extra given their ages.7) I hope we see more and more of Timmons as the season goes on.

To practice it against real competition and see if it works as you would hope.

Really? If an NFL defensive coordinator is worried about Willie Parker lining up at QB and Roethlisberger lining up at WR, he had better start looking for alternative employment.Basically these kinds of plays are fun for the guys to run in practice. It helps to keep things light.

Does anyone remember the results of these plays in preseason? I would think if they were bad its entirely possible they were just experimenting to see if it was successful at all. Maybe they spent practice time on it because if they were getting 10 yards a pop in preseason, they would've used it in the regular season.

I believe they did this 4 times. Three times with Ben/FWP and once with Lefty/Mendenhall. All 4 times were runs. The first attempt was good for 5 yards and the other two times with Parker were losses or no gains. I think the attempt with Mendenhall was good for 3 or 4 yards.

This is the team that had a 265 pound RB throwing passes and the team that won the Super Bowl on a pass by a WR (albeit both came with a different coach). If you're an NFL defensive coordinator and you don't worry about it, you probably will be looking for alternative employment.

Moore has been a good punt returner. They had a good kick returner in camp (Drumond) and cut him. I hope they don't regret it.

I understand your point, but Randle El, who was a QB in college, throwing a TD pass in the SuperBowl is vastly different than lining Ben up at WR and having Fast Willie take the snap. Essentially, you don't have to cover Roethlisberger and you don't have to respect the pass at all. How is that supposed to scare anyone? Let's just leave Ben on the sidelines and take the snap with 10 men.

Drumond did not show anything in camp. He last good year was 2004 that's a long time ago.

Ben was a WR up until his senior year in HS when he switched to QB so it's not something he hasn't done before... that said, I doubt Tomlin will be throwing him the ball anytime soon, I know I wouldn't be at all...D.Dixon is a different story however.

If Tomlin is worried about Mendenhall's ball security (as he said the other day), why in the world would he have him return kicks?

I think that is going to be a big test for Mendy. If he can return kicks without coughing up the ball then he'll gain confidence in himself and in the eyes of the coaching staff. If he is fumbling kickoffs then he is going to sitting on the shelf for a good part of the season.

He didn't have enough returns to make any kind of judgement. He was cut because he couldn't really do anything else.

He was Alan Rossum part II. Past his prime with no versatility to offer.ST will continue to be an Achilles heel for this team whether they are kicking or being kicked to. Fox and Woods do give me some small hope on the coverage units.Ligashesky should have been gone after last season. Really should never have been hired. Failed at every opportunity to date as a ST coach.
