***NFC Championship Game Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Holding Rodgers to a 55.4 passer rating and forcing 2 interceptions was the best possible scenario the Bears could've hoped for on defense. Outstanding job against a great QB who had been red hot. And to think some said they weren't in the top tier of defenses. :goodposting: If you had shown me Rodgers stat line before the game, I would've said the Bears would win. :goodposting:
I thought the Bears offense was playing so poorly Rodgers played down to the competition too. Then the play calling was so bad (going to rookies on 3rd down repeatedly and running when you got no yards) I was surprised Rodgers got urlacher down too-must have gotten him off balance. I think one of our guys could have caught him but maybe not.Not a good game to watch but 2 good teams on other days. Bears drafts the last 2 years-some good players considering no high picks in 09-10. They did want to draft James Starks but went with LeFeavor instead. Bears fans - you guys have been total class in this thread.(except rudistein, he's melting down) I think if that game were any longer youd be the champs. Hell of a game yesterday.

The Bears are a top tier defense. However so are the Packers, and that was the difference in this game.

I think that's oversimplifying. The Bears special teams didn't show up yesterday. Hester was terrible on punt return - and GB seemed hell bent on kicking him the ball (which normally doesn't go well). Also, the Bears played with musical QBs the entire 2nd half.

To be fair to Hester, GB's punter was lights out. Dude was one of the difference makers yesterday.

Agreed...and several of us stated that during the week leading up. All the talk was Rodgers vs. the Bears D. But people kept forgetting the Packers D. I pointed out several times that a Cutler led offense had never put up more than 15 points against this Capers D for Green Bay.Anyone who said the Bears D was not that good needs to have their heads checked though.

:bag: So was the coverage. Even on one he did return, they could have called several block in the backs.Bush had a pretty nice game (even better if he could have re-established his feet out of the endzone on the one punt).

It has definitely been lost in the shuffle, but the interception by Urlacher in the endzone was awesome. He's been a force on that defense for so many years and still shows up big in important games. You're awesome #54. Carried this team for over a decade now. Some teams wait for decades for a player like that. Great pleasure seeing him play for all of these years. :lmao:
He was an absolute beast today. As a Packer fan, I can't stand having to face him...but as an NFL fan, he's fun to watch.
:bag: The guy has been and continues to be a great player and has a ton of class as well.It was interesting last week in Rodgers comments about he and Urlacher knowing each others calls and they try and throw each other off at times.

Not sure how you come to this conclusion. Sure they punted to him, but half of those punts came from around midfield and landed inside / around the 10 yard line. There simply weren't many ideal return opportunities.4-10-GB 47 (5:00) 8-T.Masthay punts 40 yards to CHI 13, Center-61-B.Goode. 23-D.Hester to CHI 16 for 3 yards (57-M.Wilhelm).4-15-CHI 35 (:32) 8-T.Masthay punts 32 yards to CHI 3, Center-61-B.Goode, downed by GB-28-B.Underwood. PENALTY on CHI-58-R.Wilson, Offensive Holding, 1 yard, enforced at CHI 3. 4-1-CHI 36 (4:29) 8-T.Masthay punts 25 yards to CHI 11, Center-61-B.Goode, downed by GB-28-B.Underwood.4-9-GB 38 (4:39) 8-T.Masthay punts 46 yards to CHI 16, Center-61-B.Goode. 23-D.Hester to CHI 18 for 2 yards (28-B.Underwood). 4-18-GB 24 (1:13) 8-T.Masthay punts 65 yards to CHI 11, Center-61-B.Goode. 80-E.Bennett to CHI 33 for 22 yards (49-R.Francois, 30-J.Kuhn).4-2-CHI 43 (9:32) 8-T.Masthay punts 43 yards to end zone, Center-61-B.Goode, Touchback.4-1-CHI 35 (7:31) 8-T.Masthay punts 25 yards to CHI 10, Center-61-B.Goode, out of bounds.4-11-GB 24 (3:07) 8-T.Masthay punts 58 yards to CHI 18, Center-61-B.Goode. 23-D.Hester to CHI 29 for 11 yards (28-B.Underwood).He probably had 2 good chances all day. That's it. On the first one, his own guy ran into him. That one ended up being illegal man down field on GB, and 4th down was replayed. Earl Bennett came out and returned that one because Hester was shaken up.The other one, he gained 11 yards on.

Loved the Woodson post game here.

The line about the president not wanting to come to see them play in the Super Bowl (after saying he would go if Chicago was there) that they would have to go see him.

And a big thumbs down to a few things NFL wise.

A. Why if a visiting team wins is the trophy presentation in the locker room?

B. What the crap was that ridicoulsly lame redo of the Halas trophy? Hated that new look for it...bring back the old version please.

I'm going to venture this has to do with drunk hometown fans mad that their team just lost hanging arounf to heckle, boo and do stupid things in general...and Philly fans would likely do this even if their team won. j/k

Yeah. Presenting the trophy on the opposing team's field would be a bad idea.

Yeah, that is probably a big part of it...just seems thats why you have security and you don't put the thing right up near the fans. I just prefer it all outside with any of the fans they have around there being able to watch.

No, I do agree with you - I think it would have been nice for the Packer fans who came down, put up with all the crap they did to get to enjoy the victory in some way. I was at the game when the Bears won the NFC in '06 and seeing the trophy presented and hearing the speeches live was an experience a will hopefully always remember. It is a sad statement about society that visiting teams who win are deprived of that opportunity.

Got that right. I'll likely never experience anything like that again. :goodposting:

in such an awful game played by the bears and one of the most frustrating for a bear fan to watch, the worst, most unforgivable thing was having todd collins at #2 on the depth chart. an absolute, complete waste of 2 possessions in one of the most important games in franchise history.

after the NYG game, we knew how bad he was. he throws 11 passes for 36 yards and 1 INT. 8.1 passer rating.

yet they march him out there again against, carolina, the worst team in the nfl. they leave him out there long enough to throw 16 passes for 32 yards, 4 INTs and a 6.2 passer rating.

yet they bump him back up to #2 on the depth chart a little later in the season and march him out there again yesterday. he goes 0-4, 0 yards and has his best qb rating of the season at 39.6.

nothing about this terrible game pissed me off more than this, and there was a lot to be mad about. rant over.

ETA --- ok rant is not over yet ... the 2nd worst thing -what was with that end around to bennet in a crucial 3rd down at the end of the game when hanie just led 2 TD drives? let him just throw the damn ball! then if he doesn't get a decent look, he can throw it away or take a sack. instead, we end around then give him 1 shot to throw on a 4th down and he is forced to throw up a prayer.

If I were a bears fan I'd be  about a few things:#1 - Todd Collins as even a #4 QB.. worthless.

#2 - NOT calling a timeout after the failed 3rd down attempt.

A good coach would know there is no way you force a "rookie" QB to go into hurry up on 4th down.

Hell, most Coaches with a veteran at QB would have called a timeout there.

Who cares if it is your last Timeout. 4th down and game is the time to use it.

Man, if you are relying on your special teams unit to win you the NFC Championship that speaks volumes about your offense...

Congratulations Packer fans! Two exceptional QBs and defenses will be on display in Dallas this year. I hope it goes your way.

I was too pissed off yesterday to come back in here, but I will be rooting for you (through gritted teeth) to beat the Stillers in two weeks. Your team is very good right now and is going to be scary good when full strength for the foreseeable future. I just hope the Bears can squeeze a couple more seasons out of some of their aging players and start filling a few holes on the oline, dtackle, and come up with a legit big time WR option, so they can come back stronger next year. IMHO the Bears will have to if they want to have a realistic chance to keep pace with our brethren from up north. If the Bears want to see another divisional championship, it's going to take more than good fortune and avoiding injuries to get past GB over the next few seasons.

Anyways, kudos to Rodgers and that defense for going on the road and overcoming Philly, ATL, and CHI for the right to face another stiff test in the Super Bowl. It won't be easy, but I wish you all the best of luck and hope to see an exciting game.

Defense baby!

Defenses are dynamic for Green Bay, Pittsburgh

By Rob Reischel, for the Journal Sentinel

Jan. 23, 2011

Chicago — Much of the attention before Super Bowl XLV will likely be on quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger of Pittsburgh and Aaron Rodgers of Green Bay.

Roethlisberger has two Super Bowl wins, yet somehow remains underrated in many circles. Rodgers is one of football's rising stars and is fighting to join that class of elite quarterbacks.

But the real story is just how dominating the two defenses have been. Both the Packers and Steelers run 3-4 schemes that have been among the NFL's finest in virtually every category this season.

Pittsburgh finished No. 1 in the NFL in points allowed (14.5) and Green Bay ranked No. 2 (15.0). The Steelers were also No. 2 in total defense (276.8 yards per game) and the Packers finished fifth (309.1).

Green Bay was first in opposing quarterbacks passer rating (67.2) and the Steelers were second (73.1). The Steelers also ranked No. 1 in sacks (48), while the Packers tied for second (47).

Green Bay was second in interceptions (24) and the Steelers tied for fifth (21). The biggest difference between the two defenses is Pittsburgh ranked No. 1 against the run (62.8 yards per game) and the Packers were 18th (114.9).

Pittsburgh's defensive coordinator is 73-year old **** LeBeau, considered by many to be one of the finest defensive minds in NFL history. Interestingly, LeBeau coached Green Bay's defensive backs from 1976-'79.

Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers has turned a hodge podge unit into one of football's finest. Interestingly, Capers was the defensive coordinator in Pittsburgh from 1992-'94 and LeBeau was his defensive backs coach.

Everybody loves offense, but the mastery of Capers and LeBeau could very well decide Super Bowl XLV.

Todd Collins being in the league still is definitely a major WTH (or something to that effect  ).

Despite the fact that it played better as the season went on, the Bears definitely need to upgrade their offensive line. That should be the main goal of their offseason.

B. What the crap was that ridicoulsly lame redo of the Halas trophy? Hated that new look for it...bring back the old version please.
Answer to A is that the Packers requested it out of respect to the Bears:Link

Here are a couple of bits of info on the Super Bowl and Sunday's NFC championship game that came our way this morning:

First things first: The Green Bay Packers get to choose the color of jerseys for the Super Bowl in Arlington, Texas, because the NFC team is the home team. Packers spokesman Aaron Popkey said that decision hadn't officially been announced as of Monday morning.

There are only two choices (no throwbacks for this event), and it is safe to assume green is more likely than white.

Second: Some fans were wondering why the George Halas Trophy presentation was in the Packers' locker room Sunday instead of on the field. It was because the Packers requested it.

"We wanted to be respectful of the Bears organization. Because of that, we felt it would be more appropriate in our locker room," Popkey said.

Popkey said the New York Giants made a similar choice when they won the 2007 NFC championship at Lambeau Field.

I can't bare to go into that stupid Cutler thread. I'll say I can't believe how big the Cutler story has gotten. It's been the lead topic on every show while the two Super Bowl teams have been bumped down a notch. That's pretty amazing, imo. It's not that big of a deal. Regardless of which side you're on, it's getting a little out of control. Sad. :pickle:

Interesting...well then, I will let the NFL off the hook for that.Though, at least have the celebration and such available on the jumbotron for the fans who stuck around.

:lmao: I still think it's unfair how he's being treated.

If he was more a "smiley" guy and more open with the press and public, he would be treated differently.

It really is a shame.

Seriously, top to bottom the Packers have shown a lot of class including speaking out on Cutler's behalf. It is really hard not to like them.

Let's not get carried away.

This Bears coaching staff really didn't need another black eye over this game, but here it is....They weren't smart enough to pull Collins, their hand was forced.

Bears QB Todd Collins reportedly suffered a "significant" shoulder injury in the third quarter of Sunday's NFC Championship Game.According to NFL Network's Albert Breer, Collins "might need surgery" and the impending free agent's "long career could be over." Sadly, it took this injury for the Bears to insert Caleb Hanie when all along he was clearly their best option behind Jay Cutler. Collins is scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday.

Here's a not so good quote from Clay Matthews: "I kind of wish we had Jay in there the whole game the way things were going." Ugh. That hurts. :goodposting:

Clay should take a week-long break from talking to the media.....
He doesn't come across as very bright. He also kind of has a high pitched voice for a dude.
Why do you post stuff like this?
For once I agree with Beaver here.I have listened to Matthews many times, and he comes across as very intelligent. Someone who truly loves the game and never disrespects other players. I don't think he was dissing Cutler here either.
