Actually, it's the exact opposite problem. Tagliabue was a lawyer, and whatever his faults, he at least tried to approximate due process. Goodell is entirely results-focused. He didn't want to punish the Pats for Spygate, he did want to punish them for Deflategate, he railroaded the Saints on Bountygate to show he was tough, he changed his mind 50 times on Ray Rice. There's no overarching principle other than "Protect the shield (from bad PR)".
I completely disagree with the premise of this thread. There is no double standard. The standard is "Make owners as much money as possible". Everything flows logically from that.
Protecting QBs with ticky-tack RTP calls? Healthy QBs = more offense = higher ratings = more money.
Cram extra seats in close to the end zone? Sell more tickets = more money
They're not hypocrites. They're being completely transparent about their priorities.
Here’s a different double standard on display Sunday. I apologize if this has been noted somewhere else. I’m talking about the Godwin catch and eventual TD that was overturned because he was “down by contact.” Godwin’s foot indeed touched the defender. But hasn’t the NFL made it clear that a WR that catches a ball while going to the ground must maintain control through that process in order for it to be a catch? Their ruling implies that possession was established before the WR completed the requirements for a catch. So, according to this ruling, for the defender the WR establishes possession immediately upon catching the ball but the WR has to progress past “down by contact” for possession to count for him? Lol. Does the NFL know what a catch is? [they do not].
First, the "control through the process" in hitting the ground was taken out this year. Second, it was "maintain" possession through contact with the ground. "Maintain" means continue, which implies that possession was established before the catch was "complete". Third, even if it was in, it wouldn't affect this. "Possession" is not necessarily the same as a "completed catch". Receivers have to land in bounds, too. You can have possession and land out of bounds which means it isn't a completed catch. So, yeah, once Godwin had "possession", which he clearly did before contact, any contact before he hits the ground is enough to make him down by contact.
You know what's a watered down product? Watching Deshon Kizer air mail the ball 12 feet out of bounds time and again while Aaron Rodgers watches on from a stretcher.
Football is changing - accept it or go watch something else.
Youre right it's changing......and not all for the better.
I'm all for protecting QB's from getting creamed in the pocket......I'm just not for legal, form tackles being flagged......they need to do better, period.
