Your probably right but it never really pays to screw over your loyal fans. It's the little things that eventually turn someone off and you never know how many it takes. No doubt, that is when I watch Cheers and Hill Street Blues......PeaceThursday night? Worst. We knew this was coming, no biggie as far as I'm concerned. What cracked me up is that older thread talking about the NFL's agenda on the upcoming draft(s). Most were up in arms and claiming they were making a huge mistake. Like the NFL doesn't know how to market its product...The only people that hate this are the die-hards. That's not their concern because you're not going anywhere -- they want more, as they should.

This is why I thought Friday night was a good plan. Play poker, watch the draft, get drunk on Friday night. Most of us work Friday, so the party would either be much less intense or we'll be hungover on Friday. course, it gives us something to talk about on Friday, so it's not all bad. I'm not going to tape the draft just to see who my teams draft, I can look the names up online.LAUNCH said:Short sighted as usual. The NFL draft like the Superbowl is an event for people to gather and be together while the football product and commercials are on. There are going to be your core people that would watch it on a Tuesday at 2am if that's when they decided to show it, but there is a larger football fan base that goes to these poker games/ parties for the social aspect of it. Without the social aspect of it I would imagine that more people would just DVR it do something else for an hour or two and fast forward to see who their team drafted.

maybe.IMO the bigger difference in the actual draft will be the number of moves at the start of the 2nd and 4th rounds.I think this is a great move.I mean, c'mon - the Superbowl is essentially primetime on a Sunday - and everyone works Monday. No biggie. There's Monday night games, and Thursday night games. They don't suffer. I don't see how this is anything but good for the NFL and its fans. Make rounds 1-3 prime time "events"? No-brainer. Personally, I prefer it (didn't do the Sat draft party thing anyway).I'm wondering if this actually affects draft strategy for some teams, as the first round will now be an even bigger deal than it already is. I could definitely see a team on the fence between, say, an O-Lineman or a big-name RB in round 1 go with the RB, as it's a far more interesting pick for the fans ("on the fence" being a key phrase here.)
The loyal fans who built a tradition around it. My out of town friends and I always have an all day party during the draft. What's the point in an all day party for an event that is only going to last 3 hours and you have to go to work the next day? The old draft was almost like a holiday. This is just like another prime time TV show. Nice. Being married and a father I don't party on Thursdays. I can't say that I will even watch the whole thing. Without the party, I will probably have NFL Radio on in the background and switch over the TV when its time for Dallas to pick. Or just catch the pick online since the ESPN coverage is usually horrible anyway. All they will do on Friday and Saturday is talk about what happened on Thursday night anway. What loyal fan has gotten screwed over?Your probably right but it never really pays to screw over your loyal fans. The ones with Saturday traditions, and the rest of us who's wives happily gave us Saturday to do our thing. Won't happen with Thursday and Friday nights. There are other 'traditions' after all. DVR is the only real option. And thank god for that.As for the poster you responded to, RIGHT ON! Greedy corporate entities over-estimate their audience's tolerance for messing with our old or new cultural icons for cynical, money grubbing purposes. It is a testament to the cap gods that the NFL didn't blow themselves up with free agency and players making 5-10-now-100-million-dollars...with fans footing the bill with ridiculous ticket prices and endless merchandising. One slip, I mean it, ONE slip, and the NFL could lose a bunch of people like the MLB and the NBA. Those 2 leagues are dead to me and many others. I may be in a minority, but I am not alone. What loyal fan has gotten screwed over?Your probably right but it never really pays to screw over your loyal fans. Exactly. Same here. NFL Draft Saturday is a holiday for us. People come in from out of town and we all have a big BBQ, keg and football followed by poker at night. Wives are happy to get rid of us for the day.It was this type of thing that made the NFL draft so popular in the first place. It had the feel of an "event" that you gathered together with your friends. Now it's just another Thursday night, gotta work the next day, not really worth going out for. Ho-hum. This is a terrible move by the NFL. Even worse for those on the west coast *who'll still be at work*!It wouldn't have been as bad if they had moved the 1st round to Friday night. That makes it easier to get together for parties as no work the next day.It was bad enough they started at 4pm this past year and it went so fast it was over by 7. It was MUCH better when it started at noon and went all day. MUCH better. Thursday? NFL=FailThe loyal fans who built a tradition around it. I'm surprised the NFL didn't take this into account.Ugh,for leagues that have a rookie draft "prior" to the NFL Draft a Thursday night start time is the worse thing possible.
I can't wait till they move the championship game to "Super Bowl Thursday"The NFL is taking over Thursday nights (at least in the fall.) I agree with others that have said that this will grow on people after a draft or two.
