NFL Films Considering West Michigan

August 29, 2007

MUSKEGON — NFL films is starting a new franchise highlighting high school football rivalries from across the country.

The Muskegon-Rockford matchup October 19th is on their short list but the deal is far from done.

They want to feature the game in a 45-minute documentary, part of a new franchise they're starting.

NFL films is known for its slow motion high speed film cinematography where the players seem to be running at the camera. The ball comes right at the camera and it'll look just like The Super Bowl.

Muskegon's athletic director Mike Watson is quick to point out this opportunity is in the early stages.

"It is quite a process, we have to make sure that we receive waivers from all the kids involved, all the staff members, cheerleaders all of that," said Watson.

Half the documentary will be game action. The rest will be stories from the community, fans and players.

This is cool. I hope to see a profile of my alma mater, North Hills High School and our rivals, North Allegheny High School. Both schools have had alumni reach the NFL.

Woodland Hills has many more pros than NA and NH...

I would imagine they'd want to one on Long Beach Poly, but they don't really have a rival because they win so much. They have, however, put the most players in the NFL of any school in the country.

Rockford rolls to upset of No. 16 Muskegon in Game of the Week

Rockford earned some temporary Michigan bragging rights after upsetting the rival No. 16 Muskegon Big Reds 28-21 Friday night. The Rams' victory snapped Muskegon's 22-game winning streak.

Additional coverage available here from the Grand Rapids Press, and WZZM in Grand Rapids has video highlights (scroll down in the video player to select the game).

Rockford's win came in a game selected as USA TODAY's High School Game of the Week, which featured a live Webcast of the game on USATODAY.com. A crew from NFL Films was also on hand to document the football tradition in west Michigan, and the program is scheduled to air on Versus on Nov. 1.

The Big Reds squandered their first opportunity to take a lead against the Rams. After driving to the goal line, Muskegon fumbled inside the 1-yard line with 1:48 remaining in the first quarter. The Rams recovered but their offense punted shortly after coming onto the field.

On the ensuing possession, Muskegon’s Justin Hannett ran for a 20-yard touchdown to put the Big Reds on the board. Rockford dug itself a bigger hole by fumbling the kickoff. Muskegon recovered and took over at the Rams’ 49-yard line.

Big Reds signal caller Chris Crawford engineered a quick drive and capped it with a quarterback keeper. Kicker Jose Rodriguez’s extra point attempt was blocked, making the score 13-0 in Muskegon’s favor.

Rockford responded with a 63-yard TD pass from quarterback Robert Banaszak to Donny Schaner. The Rams’ first touchdown – before even earning their initial first down – cut the deficit to 13-7.

Hannett pulled the momentum back in the Big Reds’ favor after he rumbled 78 yards for a TD with just 27 seconds left in the first half. Muskegon converted a two-point conversion, stretching its lead to 21-7.

The Rams shook off their tough first half, responding with a touchdown on their first drive of the third quarter. A surprise onside kick followed and gave Rockford possession right back. Running back Alex Caurdy made the risk pay off, rushing in from 8 yards out to even the score at 21 with 7:50 remaining in the third quarter.

Another scoring chance did not come until the fourth quarter. After a Muskegon drive stalled, coach Tony Annese sent out Rodriguez for a go-ahead field goal attempt. Rodriguez’s kick hit the crossbar and missed.

The Rams capitalized as quarterback Tim McGee – who replaced Banaszak to start the second half – hit Schaner for a TD to put Rockford up 28-21 with just 2:18 to play.

Muskegon (8-1) tried to respond, but its attempt failed, sending the Division II power to its first loss of the season. Rockford’s win sends it to 8-1 as well and puts it in a three-way tie atop the Ottawa-Kent Red Conference, with Hudsonville being the third squad in the fray.

Rockford sees Red in tough loss to Muskegon

by Jane Bos | The Grand Rapids Press

Saturday October 18, 2008, 12:20 AM

ROCKFORD -- How many times can you say stunned, shocked, surprised?

The record crowd crammed into Ted Carlson Memorial Stadium on Friday night spent the first two quarters in a daze, saying it over and over and over again.

By the end of the game, after Muskegon had handed Rockford a startling 34-6 victory to claim at least a share of the O-K Red Conference, the words and head shaking were exhausted. Reality set in.

Unbeaten Muskegon, ranked second in Division 2, is that good. A win at Jenison next week would give them the outright title with an astonishing -- and almost unheard of -- 7-0 record in the O-K Red. And previously unbeaten Rockford, the top-ranked team in Division 1, might need some work.

"Who expected that?" Rockford coach Ralph Munger asked. "But that can happen anytime to anybody who plays a talented team like that. It's as simple as that. They are a gifted group, they are very potent on offense, they are dynamite.

"We could not do anything."

Munger was not exaggerating. Check out the final statistics, the one where Rockford totaled a -13 yards on offense, including a -41 rushing. The Rams also punted seven times.

Muskegon, meanwhile, amassed more than 500 yards in offense, scored on its first five possessions and punted once in the fourth quarter.

It was not the game anyone -- not one of the stadium record 13,657 fans -- anticipated.

So I'm only a year late in replying :goodposting:The point wasn't who has the most pros. The point was that the NH - NA rivalry is one of the fiercest around here. I can't even name a Woodland Hills rival. Isn't that school only like 20 years old, anyway?

They win so much they have yet to play in a CIF Bowl game. De La Salle owns them.

Agreed that there's more to high school football than most pros. Even so, NA and NH have more pros than you listed. Two Steelers are missing from your list: Thom Dornbrook (North Hills, played in SB XIV) and Gregg Garrity (North Allegheny, drafted in 1983, known more for his game-winning catch in the Sugar Bowl for Penn State).

That's a ridiculous take. How many years have the CIF State Championship Bowl Games been around again? So, is it your take that Poly hasn't won more than probably any high school football team in California state history?

They are the #2 team in the state to De La Salle. Get over it.

De La Salle had a 151 game winning streak, that's insane. I also read that the coach has like 300+ wins and against 20 something losses. Unreal.

Really? Because I see that Poly is the #1 team in the state (#5 in the country) with a 7-0 record. Then, it's Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and Corona Centennial, both with 7-0 records. De La Salle's #4 in the West, though.

Until Bellevue (WA) whupped their butts a couple of years ago.

This year. You are the one who brought up History, and History says that DLS is #1.From a blurb searching for records:

All time HS Programs

1. De La Salle High School (Concord, California)

By far the most well-known high school football team in the country, De La is so good they don't care about California state championships. They've been to 16-straight.

What De La cares about is National Championships. They have six of them, and that's more than any other school in the nation.

What De La is most known for is the longest winning streak in high school football history. De La didn't lose a game from 1992 to 2005—surviving a total of 151 games. The previous record was 72. It looked like the dynasty might be over after a few sketchy seasons in 2005 and 2006.

The sports programs at De La are juggernauts, and there doesn't seem to be an end. Even more famous alums include Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew, Denver Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams, New York Giants wide receiver Amani Toomer, and New England Patriots backup quarterback Matt Gutierrez.

7. Long Beach Poly High School (Long Beach, California)

With an enrollment of 4,750, Long Beach Poly is the most celebrated prep football program in Southern California. They have a long history of winning dating back 110 years, and the school is always thinking about state championships.

LBPHS has a strong alumni in football, from DeSean Jackson to Willie McGinest. Poly's biggest fan, Snoop Dogg, can be seen at the sidelines of every game. That would make any football stud want to play there.

Don Bosco Prepatory in Ramsey, NJ has really come on in the last decade with Greg Toal as its coach (if it sounds familiar his son plays LB at Boston College, great player, injuries have hurt his status). They have actually beaten De La Salle, though they have lost this year:

Don Bosco Prep's football program is a competitor for the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) Non-Public Group IV championship almost every year, appearing in all state finals since 2002. Since Don Bosco first started playing pigskin, the Ironmen have won 10 state championships (1968, 1970, 1973, 1983, 1984, 1990, 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2007). Don Bosco Prep has been boosted by regular season competition with perennial powerhouses such as Bergen Catholic High School and Saint Joseph Regional High School. The football team ended the 2002 season ranked number 8 in the nation in USA Today’s “Super 25” ranking of the best high school football teams in the country, and was ranked 2nd in the nation in the 2003 season.[6] In 2006, the Ironmen finished the season ranked number 7 in the nation. In 2002, 2003, and 2006, the football team won the Star Ledger Trophy as the best team in New Jersey[citation needed] and ended the season in each of those three years ranked number 1 in the East by USA Today.

Their baseball team is ridiculous, too. Only team around here to undefeated this past spring, the first in 30 years.

On September 27, 2008, their nationally-ranked football team traveled to California where they defeated powerhouse De La Salle High School 23 - 21 on national television, the winning margin coming with 10 seconds left on a 19-yard (17 m) field goal.[11]

Bellevue beat Poly as well, 30-16. Beat De La Salle 39-20 in front of 20,000 fans at Quest Field. Both teams were #1 in California at the time.

You said Poly is the #2 football team in the state, which denotes a current team. I didn't think you were extending the notion of team back throughout history to combine all of their teams into one, singular team.In any case, I'd say that Poly's excellence and their history, which literally extends back 100 years, is much more impressive than De La Salle's, which began in the 80s. De La Salle also benefits from playing in a much weaker Northern Section compared to the Southern Section Poly plays in. That being said, "the streak" is about as impressive a feat as there has ever been in high school sports.

I will say that De La Salle has a much, much, much, much (there aren't enough much's to express this) better coaching staff than Poly. Poly wins championships primarily on talent alone. Raul Lara is a terrible coach.
