NFL Insiders Rip Gruden For Bucs' Poor Start (1 Viewer)

Mortensen had a column on his blog today where he talked to a number of NFL insiders to get their opinions on the Bucs' poor start. It's an Insider column so I can't link or reprint it here but many of the remarks placed the blame squarely on Gruden. Here are some excerpts:

On Simms having so many passes batted down: "The guy runs a lot of quick game, a lot of three-step and five-step stuff and everybody knows it," said one personnel man.

"Everybody talks about the clock in a quarterback's head, but defensive linemen have their own clock, too," said a defensive coordinator. "Especially with (the Bucs), you see three-step, you teach your guys to get their hands up. Even in the five-step, if you don't have the penetration, get your hands up."

Steve Young also said Simms wasn't helped by having a light workload in the pre-season.

No use of the shotgun: "Almost all of those West Coast (coaches) have been slow to adapt with the shotgun but most of them have adapted," a personnel man said. "Gruden is one of the few who won't. When you've got an offensive line that is shaky, you have to create some space occasionally for your quarterback with the shotgun. He doesn't believe in it."

On Gruden hurting Simms' confidence: "Gruden is brutal," said a GM. "His body language is the worst in the league. Everybody sees it. The way he treats that kid on the sidelines is a disgrace. Sure, he did it with (Rich) Gannon but Gannon was a veteran and he dished it back. I don't care how tough Simms is, what Gruden has done in two games is a clinic on how to break a quarterback's confidence."

Said another GM: "It's one thing to ride your QB in practice but how can a coach expect a guy to keep his composure in a game when the coach can't do it himself?"

On the lack of a running game: "Gruden abandons it way too quickly," said a personnel man. "Maybe he ought to see what Brad Childress is doing in Minnesota. That guy gets it."

oh POOR CHRISSY! maybe chrissy should fake a hand injury when the going gets tough and he can't handle pressure... he has good practice at that.

Ohhhh, that's good info. Maybe you should pass that along to the NFL GM that said that. I'm sure you're much more knowlegable on how to bring a young QB along. Or just maybe the NFL GM knows something.

I thought this was a pretty interesting article that made some very valid points. Simms is struggling no doubt and while he should own some of the blame, alot of other issues are at play in the offense.

sorry, seen enough of chrissy's act to know that i wouldn't let him QB a powderpuff team, much less an NFL squad if i was at all serious about winning.

I could not believe how many people in the fantasy world (and many on this board) were over hyping Chrissy Simms this off season. I saw him play in the playoffs and against the Bears and he was just terrible.

Also, what is the over/under on who the "GM" is who's quotes have been used? It cannot be Rich McKay can it?

When the Bucs won the Super Bowl, the thing that got the team known for it's defense over the hump was a controlled, short passing game. Brad Johnson dominated the Niners, Eagles, and Raiders in the playoffs by marching down the field 8-yard pass by 8-yard pass to Keyshawn Johnson, Joe J, and Keenan McCardell. That's Gruden's offense. He wants to control the clock with the pass.

So what are the differences between the offenses then and now? It's not Gruden's philosophy...

Apparently, the difference is 'body language'.

Brad Johnson >>>>>>>>>>>>>>Chris Simms?Just a guess.

It's amazing how much better he coached when the Bucs were winning.
When he coached Dungy's players, right?
With HIS players, he would have gotten to the SB except for the tuck rule. They had the best offense in the league. Then a scrub for a coach, took his guys to the SB, to face HIM with Dungy's players.Either way you slice it, Gruden can coach. His old team, and his current team, both got to the SB. And the Bucs made the playoffs last year. John Fox? Saban? They're doing just as bad of a job. This is just typical 0-2 the world is ending BS.

What a stupid comment. If the Buc's had Hutchinson I don't think Gruden would be so quick to abandon the run.

Mortensen had a column on his blog today where he talked to Phil S.. uh err, a number of NFL insiders...
