NFL Network Lombardi says Cowboys are slow with Barber (1 Viewer)

NFL Network's Michael Lombardi observes that the Cowboys are a "slower offensive mechanism, and can be defended much easier" when RB Marion Barber is lined up in Dallas' backfield.

Marion the Librarian lacks the power he possessed earlier in his career, and can no longer beat defenders to the corner. We agree that Felix Jones and Tashard Choice should get more playing time at Barber's expense, but history has proven that Jones' body can't handle more than 15 touches per game. :sigh:

I think they should cut Barber and go with Choice and Jones.

Barber was never an outside runner, no doubt they are more dynamic with Felix at RB, but they abandon the run most games anyways so it doesn't even matter. Jason Garrett is an idiot.

Dallas isn't cutting anyone nor should they. Felix hasn't proved he can handle the ball 20 times a game for an entire season. Barber is a good change of pace back, not quite as good as he was earlier in his career but good enough to do the job.

Detroit should take note and get Best a change of pace back before they wreck that kid's career. He's like Felix, he is not going to take the pounding of 20 plus carries for an entire season. Because you can do it for 1 week doesn't mean your body can take it for 16.

i've watched all 3 games, in fact i watch every Cowboys game, and i gotta disagree here.MB looks fine imo. all 3 backs look fine. there are 3 problems with the Cowboys running game.

1) they go away from the run. Garrett gets antsy.

2) the offense is too predictable at times.

3) the run blocking is sub-par at times.

I think your point 3 is being too light. The run blocking has been bad. All of the backs haven't really done much because of the poor blocking. No threat of run has hurt the entire offense along with stupid penalties. The Cowboys played a bad defensive team in Houston so they looked a little better. I don't look for any Cowboy runner to be serviceable on a consistent basis until there are injuries so that one back is featured all game. For now, keep them on your bench.

I've been trying to figure out why, if they are going to go pass heavy all the time, wouldnt they maximize themseleves with Felix on the field?

I understand Barber and the different aspects he brings to the table, but if they are gonna throw that thing around as much as they want to -- they should put themselves in a position to get the best results. And having Barber out there while tossing the rock around with no adandonment isnt the best set up.

Not that I have him and haven't had a chance to see him, but is Felix Jones becoming the new Reggie Bush? Both of these guys were supposed to be the dynamic play-makers that basically "revolutionized" the position, but I'm seeing a lot of negative posts regarding Jones now.

Barber looks the same as he always has to me, maybe he's breaking fewer tackles

Jones looks slower

The line isn't very good at run blocking right now

The Cowboys abandon the run way to easily

Couldn't disagree more.I usually want Felix to get more touches but not this season.

Barber has looked great when he has been out there and more importantly the offense has looked more consistant.

Felix and Choice have shown flashes but they have also sputtered as well. The backs have shown that they don't work well in the rotation that they have been given. I think they would prove much better if they would just give them each a series instead.

Reggie Bush's first two years he had a 3.67 YPC. Felix had a 6.44 YPC first two years. Negative posts sure but Felix has made a lot more big plays than Bush has as a RB

Bush caught 161 passes in his first two seasons and scored 14 touchdowns (not including returns). I don't think Jones is anywhere near Reggie's level as a playmaker based on their respective first two seasons.

Trouble is felix now looks slower out there than barber does.
Wow you couldnt be more wrong.
Ive had to sit through all three of the cowboys games this year. Felix does not have the same speed he had in years past. The weight gain is not doing him any favors. Dont know how many times ive seen him try to get to the corner only to be chased down by a linebacker.
He only looks slow because he was getting hit behind the LOS against the Bears. When they get the ball to him in space he is quick as ever. Did you happen to see the 25 yard screen vs Texabs that got called back due to holding? Felix has not lost a step

bingo !!

I am a Cowboys fan and if I had it my way I would trade Barber and start Choice and Jones, full time committee.

It takes him much longer to get up to speed than it did. He used to have instantaneous quickness. He no longer has that. He used to be the quickest guy on the field. Hes now just another guy out there and the defense is having no problems getting to him.

He looks pretty damn fast to me, but I wear corrective lenses, so I could be wrong :scared:

The problem here in Dallas remains not Barber but the offensive line and Jason Garrett's per chance to pass more than run

Exactly. I think with the team getting a little less predictable (run when it's a passing situation and passing formation, pass when it looks like a run situation and formation), they could have more success.I do think Felix gives them more flexibility as well. They should be passing more out of the backfield I think and using the RBs draws and such to exploit the fact that defenses are confident that they can guess when Dallas will run/pass.
