NFL "Player Rookie Premier" forces rooks to miss mini-camps (1 Viewer)

Not about Gonzo so much as the overall why of this. Gee I didn't know "invited" meant "putting a gun to your head" Once again it's all about the $ - the "NFL's Management Council" should take a flying leap. Why stop there? Come up with some more quick-buck little dog n pony shows throughout the summer and right on into pre-season. Who needs practice?

Why Colts' top pick will miss minicamp

Anthony Gonzalez, the Colts' first-round draft pick has been prohibited from participating in the minicamp -- by the NFL, no less -- because he was one of 35 rookies invited to Reebok's NFL Player Rookie Premier. It's a major happening for the league and its sponsors, and begins today in Los Angeles. Gonzalez initially declined the invitation, intent on participating in minicamp. When a few other players followed suit, the NFL's Management Council stepped in and sent memos to all 32 teams. The "invitation'' would be honored. Even if a player decided not to participate in the sponsor-related event, he could not attend his team's minicamp.

I'm with BigRed on this one. If the player chooses not to go - he should be able to attend his teams minicamp. The league basicly saying - you can choose not to come, but you still can't go to minicamp - is a freekin' joke.

Brandon Jackson ran into this as well. Poor planning by the teams to schedule mc this week IMO
I agree. I believe the Packers and Colts are the only teams with mandatory minicamps this weekend. Every other team knew the schedule and avoided this weekend. It's dumb on the league's part to force the rookies to go get their pictures taken but it's also dumb for the teams to schedule a minicamp this weekend knowing another event was on the schedule.

Didn't know re. the scheduling thing. If so then I agree that the teams should've simply scheduled mini-camps another time ie assuming they had enough advance notice etc. Still weak that they "have" to go though, regardless.

Not to get in the way of an angry mob, but Gonzo would miss the minicamp anyway because of Ohio State's late graduation. Happens every year with OSU and some other schools.

The blame has to go on the few (two?) clubs who scheduled mini-camps this weekend.

The NFLPA Rookie Premiere is an annual event that EVERYONE in the league - clubs, rookies, agents, NFL offices has known about for months.

Yes, the clubs screwed up. It doesn't change the fact that, in Jackson's case, THE PLAYER CAN DECIDE NOT TO GO TO THE EVENT BUT IS STILL NOT ALLOWED TO ATTEND HIS TEAMS' MINICAMP.

That is whack.

Not too many Buckeyes actually graduate, so it usually isn't an issue.

I like to rip on the Buckeyes as much as anyone, but I don't believe it has to do with them actually graduating. It has to do when graduation ceremonies take place at their school. This applies to juniors and sophomores as well.
