NFL players playing FF (1 Viewer)

I know this occurs. in fact i heard a recent interview with vikings safety, darren sharper who joked about having elam on his team when the announcers informed him about denver's last second heroics in week 1.

now, i know these guys are professional and want to win NFL football games more than FF games, but don't you think gooddell would frown on this behavior as sort of "betting on the game." take the hypothetical, defender eases up to allow his FF player to score when it won't necessarily affect the outcome of the NFL game. i know this is far fetched and highly unlikely for many many reasons, but just in principle, don't you think gooddell would not want any potential for conflict of interest or betting to taint the NFL.

thoughts?

I've always wondered about this myself. I've heard there are a lot of NFL players that have fantasy teams.

i think it's looked upon as fun rather than betting. i recall Cooley being interviewed last year after his 3 TD game, joking that he was distraught as his opponent had him. Can't see anyone tanking just to win a fantasy game.

As long as they aren't playing in money leagues....it doesn't matter.

$$ leagues = gambling = serious offense (wouldn't be tolerated if caught)

These guys aren't about to "let up" at any point in any game just to win a fantasy football matchup. They make some serious money to do well on the field and to fail at that in any way could potentially cost them real money in the long run.

I wouldn't automatically throw out the betting aspect of it. I'm sure some (or a lot) of these guys bet $$$ on FF just as they bet on their card games or other activities. As with anything else, money on the line makes it more interesting. I'm sure Vick didn't have a side "just for fun" dog fighting league that was no money. If it's just a bunch of guys from the same team playing FF together for some chump change I don't see the harm. Alos, I cannot even fathom someone letting up so that he could win his fantasy game. If he screws up in a game it could cost him in his next contract.

like i said above, i truly doubt playing FF affects an NFL player's performance. my point was more to the issue of what the NFL or commish might think of this behavior being a potential, albeit theoretical, conflict of interest or "stain" on the game (especially at a time when gooddell is cracking down on all the negative press)

I don't know about everyone here but when you have been in the same fantasy league for a while or a league that is a group of friends, the money is nice but the championship, the boasting rights, the trophy is more important. Speaking on that subject, knowing professional athletes like most of us do, we know there doesn't have to be money on the line for the competitive edge to kick in. I have never met an athlete that wouldn't do anything to win.

Money league or friendly league, there is still a possibility of a "conflict of interest" to happen.
