NFL reviewing Suh's hit on Delhomme (1 Viewer)

I think he should get fined for it. It was a nasty face mask and then after it with Delhomme already on his knees (down by contact) he threw Delhomme to the ground (that part was unnecessary). I know it happened fast, but once the QB is on his knees he is considered tackled and there is no need to then throw him to the ground.

I will be shocked if there is no fine for this play.

Yes, football is a man's game, and rough hits are part of the game, and Suh is a beast of a player, but that was a cheap play, without question. Good physical football is not grabbing a player by the head and throwing him down like that after the play is over.

A definite fine should be coming.

Suh said he was locked up with Jake from behind and did not know Jake shoveled the ball and took him down. Should be 15 yards and move on.

This is a mans game.
 I'll bite. But first, "mans" is probably not the word you're looking for. I think you meant the possessive form with an apostrophe: man'sLet's look at the next word: gameIt's a game with rules. One of the rules is that you can't grab a player's face mask and twist his neck in a sudden "snapping" motion as though you are trying to assassinate him. Delhomme's knee was down already, plus he didn't even have the football. Suh had already accomplished his goal in this "man's game" and further action was not necessary, especially one that could have killed or paralyzed Delhomme.

Even if Delhomme had the ball the entire time, that entire sequence should result in a fine IMO. It was excessive on two counts from what I saw.

It being a late hit is not really the issue; throwing him down by the head is. That is a dirty play no matter how you spin it. It's not like Suh was in a position where he had no other choice but to tackle him like that.

I'll go on the record and say I LOVE IT.

I love the violence. Wish the Bears had somebody with that much fire.

There is no doubt this play should be fined.
 As a Husker fan, there's no bigger Suh supporter than I am. And he was wrong. You gotta back off when the QB is in a vulnerable position. You REALLY gotta back off when your facemasking him put him in that vulverable position. He's a rookie, he'll learn. But you have to fine that.

I am not going to make a judgment either way on the hit on Delhomme. It just is weird this is happening because when I watched the Denver game, I made a mental note to myself about the way Suh would go after players after the play was over or he would do little things like take an extra shot at someone while they were on the ground. Just little questionable things that you normally don't see rookies doing.

I don't know enough about the guy to call him a dirty player, maybe he was just over-excited to be playing in the NFL. Just something I noticed when I watched him.

He gets paid to strike fear into the opponent. Just doing his job.

Go back and watch some classic NFL films. Makes this play, and most others, look like child's play.

If it was Tom Brady instead of Delhomme that he took down like that, he'd have been given a 5 game suspension. You all know it.

Looked like something from Jack Hamm or Mean Joe Green there. Suh is a beast for sure, but he'll have to learn when to back off. The NFL is all about protecting its QBs. There is definitely a fine forthcoming for that play, as well there should be.

If it's a RB and if the RB has the ball then the throw down is a clean play. I wouldn't fine him for the face mask.

Problem is that is wasn't a RB, it was a "protected" QB so I'm sure they'll fine him even though he was just being aggressive.

If it was a RB without the ball he wouldn't be fined, just penalized in the game.

Welcome to the Roger Gooddell era of the NFL. He's reached out to the non-traditional football fans and has found them in droves.

Any play that even appears aggressive draws crowds claiming it was excessive and dirty clamoring for fines and/or suspensions.

15 yards for the facemask is the only thing to see here. If the whistle hasn't blown the rest is just good clean football.

For better and for worse it is a different game with different rules. Bottom line. Also, the dude is a rookie and needs to learn this lesson too. The game (and all of its rules) is bigger than any rookie.

This is ridiculous. He was standing over top of a defenseless QB from behind and not only grabbed his face mask so hard he turned it sideways. He then wrapped his entire arm around the helmet and twisted it in a motion much like he was trying to open a giant bottle of soda. It was excessive by every definition of the word and more importantly every definition of the rules. It should be fined.

The Lions are good.

And Suh is one big, mean SOB. I hope Levy can get back on the field. Can't wait to see DET vs. CHI week 1.

Considering that excessive is what is ridiculous and what has changed in the Gooddell era.Outside of the facemasking penalty he did exactly what every DL in the league should do it that situation. Put the ballcarrier on the ground and inflict as much pain and intimidation as possible.Again, outside of grabbing the mask, I'd like to know what exactly was illegal about that play other than it appeared "aggressive", "excessive" and/or "scary" which seems to be enough for Gooddell these days.

i don't think it was a "dirty" play, but he was in the wrong.

his own coach said as much. something to the effect of: he got into his facemask, which wasn't on purpose, but he didn't do a good job of disengaging once he did.

Mangini even stated something to the effect of: it was a bad, inexperienced play, i don't think Suh is a bad guy.

sorry, don't have the article in front of me.

Suh never gives up and plays until the whistle. Did he go a bit overboard? Maybe..but it cost the team 15 yards and he will learn from that. When you have coaches and backup QBs crying days later about a sack it sounds petty. Take your 15 yards and punish the the defense with a TD.

well, they did score two plays later.

Yup.Obvious fishing going on here. I don't know why it has taken this long to dish out a fine. And, I'm not one for protecting QBs as much as they are. Though, that should be a fine for any position... QB, RB, G, whatever...

Exactly....should be end of story.

No need for a review ,the flag was sufficient

bunch of mamby-pamby's here that never saw pre-90s football..Looked like a throwback to the 70s

Lions are a nice $2 D in the contest this year

Suh will get fined but I doubt they'd want him suspended for it. Love it or hate it, the NFL wants it's potential stars on the field to sell opening weekend.

My real issue with the play is that not a single OL from Cleveland even reacted to their QB getting WWF'ed into the ground. No words, not even a shove. I found that to be peculiar to say the least.

Son, this world is rough And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough Life aint easy for a boy named Suh

Suh should be fined. Not even close.

And don't believe any hype on the Lions D. Their starting front 4 is awesome but the back 7 is atrocious. Ridiculously bad and/or young. Teams will max protect and have a field day against the putrid secondary. Then they will pound the rock late in games and have the front 4 sucking wind at the start of the 4th quarter.

Love the direction the team is headed, but they still need a solid draft or two on defense to get to 500 but then watch out.

Am I the only one who wondered why none of the other Cleveland players got in Suh's face for throwing their QB hard to the ground?
They like Seneca Wallace more? Or perhaps they were afraid of Suh?
Bingo.Fwiw, I haven't seen the play, so I don't know whether he deserves a fine or not.

Last season at Nebraska, Suh got flagged on at least 3 or 4 occasions for personal foul penalties. A couple of those were very questionable for college, but would definitely be called in the nfl. And I should note that these penalties weren't done with malice or intent.

Suh is so big, strong, and fast and plays with such a high motor that he'll be good for at least a few personal foul/roughing the passer penalties each season, imo. It's simply physics.

Suh claims he thought the QB still had the ball. Rough play, he got a 15 yarder and probably get hit in the pocket book.

I think it speaks alot about the Browns too, no one got in his face. I mean Suh probably would of just ripped their arms off and beaten them with it.

Hopefully the Lions are about to turn the corner and be a competitive NFL franchise again

Suh will get fined, and pay gladly.

Time will pass, and somebody from Lions ownership will slip the amount of the fine into a plain brown envelope and get it to him on the sly. Sometime later, when nobody's looking any more. Same as it's been from time immemorial.

Guy hasn't played regular season snap 1 yet, and already has a reputation as one of the baddest, scariest SOB's in the league. If the amount of the fine is less than a million dollars, it will have been money well spent. Wish he was a Steeler. Lions fans, enjoy your freak.

Lee Roy Selmon was a beast and he wouldn't do anything like that. He never drew a personal foul call in his entire career.

Where is he now? The Hall of Fame. Grow up Suh, and take those who think it's no big deal with you to football school.

Deacon Jones was a beast and tore people's heads off regularly. Takes all kinds to make a world. For my own preferences, give me the nasty ones on my favorite team's defense.
