Given that you have no timeouts left and there is only 15 seconds left on the clock, can you complete a pass to a reciever in the middle of the field where he then throws a backwards pass out of bounds to stop the clock?

It is covered by the rules. Throwing a backward pass out of bounds inside one minute of either half is considered an attempt to conserve time and carries a five-yard penalty and 10-second run-off.

I knew you couldn't do it but I didn't know there was a specifically enumerated rule preventing it. And I consider myself fairly knowledgable about NFL rules.

So you would lose 5 yards, but have 5 seconds left on the clock.Maybe it's NOT a bad idea in some specific instances, like when there are more than 10 seconds left.
Q: What if you fake an across the field lateral that (oops) misses your target and goes out of bounds?
