Wouldn't trade the #2 pick for SS?
Seems idiotic to me. The Sabres will be extremely lucky if JE develops into a player even close to SS's impact and ability, and at 25 he hasn't reached his peak yet. There's a #2 pick every year, and yes I get that JE is a great prospect, but he's a long way off from being a player in the same ilk as SS.

yes. he is very knowledgeable.
there have been several people in hockey media who have said that Eichel is a better prospect than every #1 pick since Crosby, which includes Tavares and Stamkos.
You also can't ignore the money/contract side of things in this type of comparison. Stamkos is 6.5 years older and just 1 year away from UFA status.
If Eichel is as good as advertised, it's a huge advantage to have him on a low-cost contract for the next 7 years rather than paying Stamkos the $10+MM/year he'll likely be getting in 2016.

What about Toews or Crosby?
SS > CG and he's younger.
There's a lot of uncertainty with picks regardless of how good they are at 18. Sure, they should develop but you are hoping they develop into SS. He's already there and at 25, has the ability to become even better.
I get there's excitement around JE and maybe with him also being American, that's an angle I didn't consider.
I think the Bolts would laugh at anyone offering them picks for SS. Seems like crazy talk to me.
If the Penguins offered Crosby for McDavid, the Oilers would probably turn them down.
If the Penguins offered up Malkin for Eichel, the Sabres would turn them down.

That's how the Capitals wound up trading Filip Forsberg for Martin Erat. Didn't work out so well for them.

why not? it's not a lock Stamkos stays in Tampa at UFA. Toronto is a real possibility.
do people not understand what unrestricted free agency means?

I don't see Stamkos going anywhere.It's also not a lock Eichel will be anywhere near the player Stamkos is or anybody else for that matter.I side with the ones that say Eichel is a special talent but until he proves it at this level I will still have my doubts.Bill Brasky said:

Wow. The vets really ####ed the rookies. What are the rules for the terms of entry level contracts? CM and JE should push hard for 1-year deals and then re-negotiate if allowed. No way those two sign 5-6 year deals for league min.
Pretty sure if he doesn't sign by the next draft, he's eligible to be drafted again. I remember reading that scenario as it relates to CM. I haven't heard there's a risk of JE not signing, but who knows.
they can't. they have to take a 3-year deal. it's all in the CBA.
NHL clubs hold NCAA player rights until they leave college. Eichel will be Sabres property for the forseeable future unless he switched to major junior I guess.
McDavid is different since he's in the OHL. He would re-enter the draft if the Oilers can't sign him in a year. That's what happened to Lindros after he wouldn't sign with the Nordiques and forced the trade to the Flyers.

McDavid will sign in Edmonton. He's met with all of the Oilers brass, he's met with Messier (who has some position with the Oilers that has never been publicized) and he came to Edmonton last week. The kid may be the ultimate politician, but all he's ever said is if Edmonton drafts him, he'll be thrilled to play here.

could be a steal for Chicago and help make up a bit for them losing Hayes to the Rangers. Hopefully can develop into a scoring winger as Sharp could be gone and who knows how long Hossa has left.

Sabres are linked to everything. Will be fun next Friday. Aside from Eichel pick 21, 31, and the Isles 2nd all in play. Could move up, trade for a player and many young goalies reported on the trade blocks too.

There have been rumors that Mantha is no longer untouchable and that their number 1 pick is no longer untouchable. I haven't heard anything about Hanifin in connection to those, just the old rumor of Phaneuf.

From what I gather Panarin has first shot at taking over Sharp's vacated position. There will be a growing pains, but from everything I've read he has all the skills (except size) to fulfill that role, it's just a matter of logging ice time and seeing if he can reach his full potential. IIRC he has an out in his contract so if he doesn't make the Hawks he'll jet, he won't be playing in the AHL.

I'm optimistic about Panarin and the only downside I see is he might wind up being a cheap 1 million a year rental for 2 years, if he blossoms like some people think he may be too expense for the Blackhawks to re-sign after his contract is up.

he's from Chicago. could get a chance to play pretty quickly here given the current blueline & cap situation. That's usually the main factor that determines where these guys go.
It sucks for Columbus for sure. Sucks whenever a team loses a guy that they drafted and were counting on, but he's not the first guy to take advantage of this rule.

Leddy, for as talented as he is, is as dumb as a box of rocks. TVR made the team this year and was playing the same spot Leddy was.
