Not that you asked, but I would NOT trade the #2 pick for Steven Stamkos.

It's a good question, and I agree with Matthew -- he's probably the only guy that I'd consider. Can't move off Jack though.

Seems idiotic to me. The Sabres will be extremely lucky if JE develops into a player even close to SS's impact and ability, and at 25 he hasn't reached his peak yet. There's a #2 pick every year, and yes I get that JE is a great prospect, but he's a long way off from being a player in the same ilk as SS.
Is Kris Baker even affiliated with the Sabres? If so, those tweets are severely career limiting. If not, I'm not sure I'd ever take him seriously again.Wouldn't trade the #2 pick for SS?Kris Baker @SabresProspects 22m22 minutes ago

there have been several people in hockey media who have said that Eichel is a better prospect than every #1 pick since Crosby, which includes Tavares and Stamkos.
You also can't ignore the money/contract side of things in this type of comparison. Stamkos is 6.5 years older and just 1 year away from UFA status.
If Eichel is as good as advertised, it's a huge advantage to have him on a low-cost contract for the next 7 years rather than paying Stamkos the $10+MM/year he'll likely be getting in 2016.
Kris Baker @SabresProspects 13m13 minutes ago
I don't think people realize how far ahead of Stamkos he is at a similar age, and how good he is going to be.
Kris Baker @SabresProspects
Why not try to execute a business plan that allows for both? If I'm choosing right now, I'm taking Eichel
by this logic, the Oilers should trade the #1 pick for Ovechkin?JE is a prospect. SS is top 10 in the world. Maybe top 5.
What about Toews or Crosby?by this logic, the Oilers should trade the #1 pick for Claude Giroux or Stamkos or Tavares?JE is a prospect. SS is top 10 in the world. Maybe top 5.
why not? it's not a lock Stamkos stays in Tampa at UFA. Toronto is a real possibility. We won't have to worry about that deal anyways because no way in hell Yzerman would do it.
Valid point. I was not aware of his contract but there's contract risk on both sides.Aaron Rudnicki said:do people not understand what unrestricted free agency means?
he signs an entry level deal. there's no wiggle room. it's pre-determined by the CBA.What kind of contract do you think JE signs?
http://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2013/6/14/4414710/getting-to-know-the-cba-episode-2-the-draftAll new entry-level contracts under this CBA will automatically be two-way and will automatically have a maximum salary of $925,000 at the NHL level and $70,000 at the AHL level (or ECHL level if the case may be). However, players can earn a maximum of up to $3,775,000 from their team thanks to what the CBA calls "Exhibit 5" bonuses (performance bonuses).
I don't see Stamkos going anywhere. It's also not a lock Eichel will be anywhere near the player Stamkos is or anybody else for that matter.I side with the ones that say Eichel is a special talent but until he proves it at this level I will still have my doubts.Bill Brasky said:why not? it's not a lock Stamkos stays in Tampa at UFA. then why say it's "crazy talk" the Sabres would not make a straight up Eichel/Stamkos deal?I also don't see why the Sabres would want to do this deal anyways. They are in rebuild mode and are a few years away from being really good.

Wow. The vets really ####ed the rookies. What are the rules for the terms of entry level contracts? CM and JE should push hard for 1-year deals and then re-negotiate if allowed. No way those two sign 5-6 year deals for league min.he signs an entry level deal. there's no wiggle room. it's pre-determined by the CBA.What kind of contract do you think JE signs?

Pretty sure if he doesn't sign by the next draft, he's eligible to be drafted again. I remember reading that scenario as it relates to CM. I haven't heard there's a risk of JE not signing, but who knows.

I get the Eichel/Stamkos thing is a lot to process. Stamkos = awesome+, but I feel that Eich is slightly ahead of him at similar dev point.
Kris Baker @SabresProspects 28m28 minutes ago
Fun albeit unrealistic scenario to ponder. I think many GMs would do the deal. Not sure people realize how good Eich can be in a few yrs tho
McDavid will sign in Edmonton. He's met with all of the Oilers brass, he's met with Messier (who has some position with the Oilers that has never been publicized) and he came to Edmonton last week. The kid may be the ultimate politician, but all he's ever said is if Edmonton drafts him, he'll be thrilled to play here.Valid point. I was not aware of his contract but there's contract risk on both sides.Aaron Rudnicki said:do people not understand what unrestricted free agency means?
What kind of contract do you think JE signs? No guarantee CM signs with the Oilers either. Edmonton may have been the worst case scenario for him. He can sit out and try his luck again in a year. Who knows--maybe JE is thinking the same thing. They're only 18 and could easily spend another year in the juniors.
If these are truly special prospects, and I believe they are, they are going to get special contracts not offered to run of the mill #1 picks. There's a lot of risk there too.
Holmstrom – no relation to Red Wings great Tomas – was drafted by Detroit in 2014 and, in somehow typical Red Wings fashion, wasn’t selected until the seventh round, 196th overall. At 18, Holmstrom played against the men in the SHL this past season, scoring 10 goals and 20 points in 44 games, but it was his post-season play that really has Red Wings fans salivating.
In 15 playoff games with Skelleftea, Holmstrom scored seven goals and 18 points. Not only is that quite the impressive showing from a junior player suiting up against men, it’s a record-setting mark. Holmstrom’s 18 points are four better than the totals put up by Daniel and Henrik Sedin when they were junior players in Sweden. His 18 points weren’t just the most ever by a junior player, though; Holmstrom actually led all post-season scorers in 2014-15.
he looked pretty good in the World Championships.Anyone have a feeling on Artemi Panarin? Hawks signed him at the end of April. Any guesses as to whether he sticks in the NHL next year?
could be a steal for Chicago and help make up a bit for them losing Hayes to the Rangers. Hopefully can develop into a scoring winger as Sharp could be gone and who knows how long Hossa has left."I've covered the KHL many years," tweeted Antti Makinen. "Panarin has been the best forward past 2 years. He'll be awesome for the bhawks."

There have been rumors that Mantha is no longer untouchable and that their number 1 pick is no longer untouchable. I haven't heard anything about Hanifin in connection to those, just the old rumor of Phaneuf.Anyone else heard the rumour of the Wings trading Mantha and their 1st round pick (20th I think) to the Yotes for the 3rd overall pick?
Have heard that the Wings covet Hanifin
From what I gather Panarin has first shot at taking over Sharp's vacated position. There will be a growing pains, but from everything I've read he has all the skills (except size) to fulfill that role, it's just a matter of logging ice time and seeing if he can reach his full potential. IIRC he has an out in his contract so if he doesn't make the Hawks he'll jet, he won't be playing in the AHL.he looked pretty good in the World Championships.Anyone have a feeling on Artemi Panarin? I'm optimistic about Panarin and the only downside I see is he might wind up being a cheap 1 million a year rental for 2 years, if he blossoms like some people think he may be too expense for the Blackhawks to re-sign after his contract is up.An out-clause has been included in the deal that allows Panarin to return to Russia immediately next fall if he fails to make the NHL roster, which helps to explain how the team won his services.
Hakan AndersonI think the FBI needs to investigate the Red Wings, they have to be hacking into Swedish scouting info.
Todd Richards, Team USA head coach, had a window of several weeks to try and sell free agent-to be Mike Reilly one final time on the Columbus Blue Jackets while at the World Championships.
It didn’t work.
On Wednesday, the Blue Jackets announced that Reilly, who the team drafted 98th overall in 2011, would not be signing with them. Columbus held the former University of Minnesota defenseman’s rights until June 15, but the CBA allowed him to opt out of signing and pursue a deal elsewhere.
Ryan Johansen, your thoughts?
“We did everything we could, but we have to make other plans now. He was a good prospect for us, but we have to move forward,” said Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen to the team’s website.
In three years with the Golden Gophers, Reilly posted 89 points in 117 games.
You may remember a similar situation last summer with Kevin Hayes, who opted not to sign with the Chicago Blackhawks and moved onto the New York Rangers. Same thing happened with Justin Schultz and the Anaheim Ducks in 2012 when he chose to sign with the Edmonton Oilers.
Earlier this month, the Blue Jackets allowed Reilly to speak with other NHL teams at the draft combine in Buffalo, and according to Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch the list is down to “two or three” teams. The Blackhawks, Penguins, Kings, Rangers and Wild were among the nine teams in the running.
Who has the edge? Well, the Blackhawks won yet another Stanley Cup and could certainly use an upgrade on their third pairing and/or a replacement for Johnny Oduya if he leaves via free agency. The Penguins have Crosby, Malkin, Letang and the desire to go young on the blueline. LA has two recent Cups of their own. The Rangers have reached the Stanley Cup or conference final in three of the last four seasons. Reilly’s father, Michael, is a minority investor in the Wild.
Lots of good options available for Reilly, but as I’m sure he’ll say in his introductory press conference, it will come to “the right fit.”
Pretty sure he's eyeing one of the spots that's going to be vacated by Oduya, Rozsival, and Timonen. :fingerscrossed:
