NHL Off-Season thread:Down goes Kane! (3 Viewers)

Leddy looked pretty good on the Island to me. I don't think his development was a problem but never knew why Q didn't give him more opportunities. :shrug:

Made a ton of mistakes in the system Q has implemented, unless he was paired with one of Hammer, Keith, Seabrook, or Oduya he didn't look good. He's a great offensive D man but lacks in the D part of it and he wasn't Top 4 material in Chicago but wanted to be paid like it.

 
hes a #2 d-man on a playoff team in NYI. Silly to say he couldn't be a 2nd pairing guy in Chicago.

He was a 3rd pairing guy in Chicago because of their depth and they moved him because of his contract but I'm pretty sure they could have used him more than Timonen or the other guys this postseason.

:shrug: didn't happen here for a reason. He made a lot of mistakes that the top 4 in Chicago covered for when paired with them. When he played with a #6 he didn't look good at all. And let's be honest NYI =/= CHI, especially the top 4 D.

I don't think his value has tanked all that much, but he had a tough year and I think the management is trying to light a fire under him. He has the gifts, size, skills but he is young and dumb. I'd rather just keep him to be honest, I think you can find good D men via free agency but guys who can put the biscuit in the basket are few and far between.

he's from Chicago. could get a chance to play pretty quickly here given the current blueline & cap situation. That's usually the main factor that determines where these guys go.It sucks for Columbus for sure. Sucks whenever a team loses a guy that they drafted and were counting on, but he's not the first guy to take advantage of this rule.

no he's from Minnesota. it will be Chi or Min, both have easy paths to a roster spot. Chi is the obvious choice though.
 
Everytime I google him it says he's from Chicago.

I'd remove Justin Schultz from that list. Has he been playing top 4 minutes? Absolutely. Has his play shown he deserved to play top 4 minutes? Absolutely not.
 
I'm usually worried about Tampa stars leaving (really just because of the Rays who I guess don't need stars) but I am almost at 100% with Stamkos. I would be floored.

The money will be the same and I don't see enough long term money committed in Tampa (yet) that would make Stamkos nervous about their ability to contend in the future. The Callahan contract is guaranteed to be a disaster but that's really it.

Buffalo interested in Nash

Doesnt seem to make any sense to me but figured I would post it since there is nothing else to really post about. Obviously helps the Rangers immensely with their cap situation since there is no way they can sign every one of Step, Hags, Fast, Miller then Krieder and Hayes next year

Dreger: Cam Talbot is a hot commodity. Edmtn, Cgy, SJ, Dallas + Florida have expressed interest. Multiple trade offers. First 3 most likely targets.

Guessing Sather would be okay with Nash for the #2.

Unless Stepan or Hags' demands are monstrous, every one of those players can be re-signed. They're going to start pulling money out of the defense with all the high priced talent they have back there, and some solid replacements on the way.

The Lightning, meanwhile, have no significant free agents to re-sign. They have one of the deepest prospect pools in the NHL. And they have between $5-million and $7-million in cap space. GM Steve Yzerman could also trade away a player with an overpriced contract, such as defenceman Matt Carle, and become one of the major players in free agency or on the trade market.

This is a team in a perfect situation: It is young, highly skilled and cheap, at least for one more season. The Lightning will enter 2015-16 as strong favourites in the Eastern Conference, especially as the league shifts even more toward speed and skill. And especially after how close Tampa Bay came this year, despite a lineup filled with young players experiencing postseason pressure for the first time.

In many ways, this Lightning resemble the Blackhawks back in 2009, when they rose out of some trying seasons to challenge the Detroit Red Wings – a team that had won four of the previous 11 Cups – in the Western Conference final.

Chicago lost that series, but Toews, Kane and the other young Blackhawks gained essential experience. They saw how it felt to lose, after scraping for months to get as far as they did. And they saw what it would take to win.

Then, a year later, they did.

he put up 27 points in 48 games in his first year in the NHL.

Yes, but his +/- was -17. In the two seasons since then he's put up 33 pts in 74 games and 31 pts in 81 games. His +/- has been -22 and -17. He has some offensive skill, no doubt. But, he's been mainly a trainwreck in his own end.

my point was he clearly didn't need a year or two in the AHL to play a top-4 role.

the team around him has been a mess too. Veterans like Ference and Petry weren't putting up any better +/- numbers.

 
I know Zac Rinaldo (deservedly) catches a lot of flak for his on-ice antics, but he's actually doing something positive.

Traditionally, Rinaldo's fundraiser — which raised $20,000 in last year alone — has benefited the McMaster Children's Hospital. This year, however, he's hoping to double that tally, with a portion of the money also going to the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre where his mother, Samantha, underwent treatment for breast cancer a couple of summers ago.

"They took great care of her," he said. "And since they did a great job of helping my mom, I thought I'd do my best to help give back."

Hamilton Health Sciences, meanwhile, is thankful for the gritty centreman's ongoing contributions. "We are so very grateful for Zac's continued support and commitment," said Jennifer Laughton, vice-president of development for the McMaster Children's Hospital Foundation.

While Samantha's battle is a reason for Rinaldo's charitable work, it's not the only one. He told The Spectator his parents and grandparents have always encouraged him to donate his time, old clothes — whatever it took — to help those less fortunate.

Now, like them, he's striving to set a good example.

"I just want to give these kids an opportunity to see this is what you do when you make it," he said. "It's not all about just playing hockey or the money. You've got to give back to your hometown and give back to the people in the city."

was listening to sirius NHL today and the host was all, I would never give a second for Talbot, no disrespect. Hopefully Zipay is right and it's a second and Yakupov

I don't think the Oilers will give up that much for Talbot. He is only under contract for one season. If they want a second round pick plus then I have to hope some kind of sign and trade deal is worked out.

Phil Kessel's name will be bandied about as much as anyone's in the next week, in part because any trade the Toronto Maple Leafs make would preferably land them a pick or two in next week’s draft. Not necessarily, but preferably.

Two hockey executives from rival teams said that over the past several weeks the Leafs have a price for Kessel that is way, way too high. So the executives are staying away until it comes down. Can’t blame Toronto for starting high. Why wouldn’t you?

"They’re going to have to eat more of his salary than they think right now," said one of the rival executives.

Kessel’s partial no-trade clause lists eight teams he’s allowed to be dealt to, and my TSN colleague Bob McKenzie reported those to be: Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Now, if a team outside that list made a good offer and Kessel was intrigued, that could also trigger a deal.

Also of note, players with partial no-trade clauses have their agents resubmit their lists before July 1 every year. Sometimes the list stays the same, but I believe Kessel’s new list has already been submitted and might have been tweaked slightly in terms of how it’s going look starting July 1.

I wonder how that works. Can a player have 5 teams one year and 6 the next, or vise versa 5 teams one year and only 4 the next? Or do they have to stick to the same number every year but can just shuffle different teams.
