NHL Off-Season thread:Down goes Kane! (1 Viewer)

Oshie to the Bruins rumor is a thing?

Blues trying to cut costs?

Chris Stewart I guess is the more likely possibility.
The Wings should get him just for shootouts
Oshie hasn't scored in a shootout all year. I don't think he likes the rough ice.
3 attempts, pretty sure he'll turn that around
Ha, yeah... Probably. He did comment on there being no scrape before the shootout early in the season, though. I guess I was just echoing.

Are the Leafs this years version of the Avs last year?

27th in both FF% and CF% but yet are near the top in the East.

Flames were doing basically the same thing until the wheels have fallen off the last week or so with a 26th and 28th ratings in each.

On the flip side the Wild are 3rd in CF% and 1st in FF% yet sit outside the playoff bubble. They do slip a bit in the rankings when the game is close but still not out of the top 10.
Yes, only difference is Leafs realize their lack of possession is a huge problem, even after the win over Anaheim, Carlyle said they weren't playing good enough, where Avs sort of defiantly said the numbers were wrong and they were good.

Panthers co-owner: “I’m not putting a gun to (anyone’s) head”

By: Ken Campbell on December 19, 2014
You have to give the Florida Panthers credit for having chutzpah. They’re in the process of convincing the politicians in their city that a hockey team few people watch or care about is the driving force behind all the business the arena creates and that it would be a white elephant without them there. They’re also adamant that a team that has only once in 16 years turned a profit and hasn’t repaid its loans can do so if only it gets help with its arena lease.

And they might just be successful in doing it.

Will the Florida Panthers move from the BB&T Center in Sunrise for the colder climes of Quebec City anytime soon? Well, not if you believe NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, who has tossed ice water on the idea every time it has been broached. Nor if you listen to Panthers co-owner Doug Cifu, who is every bit as adamant.

“The Florida Panthers are not moving and we’ve consistently said we have no plans or intentions to move. We have no place to move,” Cifu said in an interview with thn.com. “We have no desire to move this franchise. We are 100 percent convinced the Florida Panthers can be viable and sustainable in South Florida.”

But there’s a catch, of course. The Panthers, led by Cifu and majority owner Vinny Viola, are looking for concessions amounting to about $78 million from Broward County over the course of the remainder of their lease on the BB&T Center, a lease that runs out in 2028. Among the concessions the Panthers are seeking are a $4.5 million reduction in their share of the arena debt repayment, a reduction to $1.5 million from $2 million on their commitment for capital improvements and maintenance and a cap of $1 million on insurance that now costs $1.7 million.

In return, the Panthers vow they’ll continue to operate as good corporate citizens and pay back money they already owe, that they’ll make an immediate repayment of $10.6 million in outstanding county loans and that they’ll operate a team that is, “at or near the NHL salary cap.”

It’s important to note that in order to pay for these concessions, the Panthers are not asking for a hike in property taxes or anything out of Broward County’s general fund, rather they want a larger share of the “bed tax” that is charged to visitors who stay in the county’s hotels. So while the people of Broward County will not be asked to fund a billionaire who owns the hockey team, it will have to direct tax money its way that could otherwise be spent on other projects.

But here’s where things get dicey. Cifu says the negotiations with Broward County have been all positive and collaborative and that the Panthers are not even entertaining the thought of leaving if they don’t get the deal they’re seeking. “If it happens, it happens; if it doesn’t, it doesn’t,” Cifu said. “I’m not putting a gun to the head of Broward County. I don’t negotiate publicly and I don’t negotiate at the point of a spear.”

The problem with that is there’s this little document that’s right on Broward County’s website titled Broward County and the BB&T Center: A Partnership of Growth & Success that was produced by Sunrise Sports and Entertainment for a county workshop in February that specifically addresses the possibility of relocation and the negative impacts it would have on the county.

It quotes Michael Evans, the president of Live Nation Arenas concert promoters as saying that if the Panthers were to leave, “the partnership between Live Nation and the BB&T Center would cease and the number of events that visited the venue on a regular basis would dwindle significantly.” The also point out that, “Losing the Panthers will have a dramatic negative effect on overall revenues, so much so that any expense savings cannot be overcome by the lost revenues. Will result in dramatic swing to an operating loss of $3.9 million.” And under the heading, “What does losing a tenant mean?” the Panthers go into a litany of negative consequences, including, “Negative impact on the quality of life in Broward County.” Yeah, they actually said that.

Does that sound to you like an organization that has absolutely no intention of moving if it doesn’t get the deal it’s seeking? Does that sound like an organization that’s not putting a gun to anyone’s head?

It’s impossible to predict what the end result of all of this is going to be. Broward County has hired an outside consulting firm to measure the effects of the Panthers departing and they’re expected to vote on the proposal in the spring. Former mayor Barbara Sharief, who is now a council member, told Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports that, in their current form, the proposals, “wouldn’t pass at all.”

Cifu, meanwhile, has been quoted as saying that the current business model of the Panthers is unsustainable. “I was quoted that the franchise has lost a good deal of money historically,” Cifu said. “I will confirm that we lost a good deal of money last year and we’ll lose a good deal of money this year. In the long term, that’s not sustainable.”

The Panthers have lost between $25 million and $35 million annually and there’s nothing to suggest that trend will turn around anytime soon. Despite being active in the free agent market and having a team that is a playoff contender, the Panthers continue to struggle mightily at the gate. Through 13 home games, they’re averaging just 8,939 fans per game, in large part because they’re counting only paid tickets. The low numbers will not have an effect on revenues because those inflated numbers didn’t represent paying customers anyway.

“When you have instability in the marketplace and you have a team that has made the playoffs four times in 21 years and advanced out of the first round only once, who can blame the marketplace for not supporting that team?” Cifu said. “I don’t. I’m disappointed that we get 8, 9, 10,000 fans in the building…I’m disappointed. I’d love to have 15,000 rabid fans wearing their sweaters like they do in Chicago or in Toronto, but you’ve got to earn that. You’ve got to earn that loyalty and you’ve got to earn that dollar and we as a franchise haven’t done a lot to earn that.”

I like what the Panthers are doing. I believe the new owners are filthy rich and they need to rebuild the value in Panthers tickets. Of course no one wants to pay for them when for the last few years they've given away or discounted 5000 or more seats a night. Like the article above says, they have no fewer paying customers tis season, they've just stopped papering the house. If they can build a consistently competitive team, maybe they can get to the 14,000 or so a night they likely need to break even.

Howard did not come out to start the second period for the Wings. Mrazek in. No word as to why

ETA- Lower body injury

Clearly, Loui's problem is the Bruins just don't get him to OT often enough.

Sorry, Rude ... your boys deserved a better fate. B's stole those two points.

Surprised that the Wings sat back in trap after taking a lead in the game tonight rather than taking chances against a tired Avs team and try to skate them out of the building - Avs found just enough energy to get it tied and send it to overtime/shootout.....and we know what happens against Detroit in shootout. 9 skaters later it's 2 points for the Avs

Great game from Calvin Pickard - looks real good with a fantastic glove hand tonight

Buffoon getting away with murder tonight.

ETA: :lmao: at the Chief going after him at the end of the game.

Caps with points in 9 straight games and Holtby has been on fire the month of December and should have had back to back shutouts if not for a Mike Green giveaway last night. They were pretty much dominated 5 on 5 by the Sens and were almost outshot 2 to 1 but Holtby bailed them out time and time again.

Big game against the Rags tonight and it will be interesting to see if Trotz continues to ride Holtby even though his history shows playing him back to back is usually a mistake(Save % below .900)

Also looking forward to seeing Joel Armia play for the Sabres tonight, heard he got called up and wanted to see him in action.

Continued proof that Barry Trotz is best coach in the NHL.

Going to the Rangers game tonight
The Stubhub system, how to buy tickets:

Pro Tip...

Basically fool proof for almost any event. Wait until the day of the game, set the sections you want (note, there should be multiple pairs in the sections), refresh your screen every 5-10 minutes. The sellers who all set their prices too high become desperate as the game draws closer. Over the course of the day, you'll find certain seats dropping and dropping in price. Amazing system.

Just scored 10th row, center ice seats for below face value.

If anyone wants to follow along for a dry run, Club Center 106 would be your go to section if you were looking for good seats below face to the game tonight. Face for these is prob in $300 range, a bunch of pairs available right now in this section, but if the sellers want to sell, they need to be the cheapest in the section as the game gets closer. You can also monitor all of the other club sections as well for comparison, but smart money says you'll get the best value here... Currently sitting at $495, $535, $626, & $629.

https://www.stubhub.com/new-york-rangers-tickets/new-york-rangers-new-york-madison-square-garden-12-23-2014-9075319/

ETA1: $495 down to $440, $535 down to $516... Watch the prices fall every 20-30 minutes. Following this system and you will always get the best priced tickets.

Most people don't buy their tickets last minute though, they get them well in advance and pay a premium... If you can hold out until like 6pm for a 7pm game, you'll always score a good deal on a place like Stubhub, or if you're at your computer during the day of the event and can just refresh constantly. I'm just offering friendly advice. I'm sitting center ice for a very in demand game tonight in club seats for below face, I feel like I have mastered Stubhub at this point.

ETA: There are only about 180 tickets left on Stubhub for this game and it is extremely high demand, so it might not be the best example, but if I was wagering, Club Center 106 would be the best deal you will get. Keep an eye on that section, face is prob about $300. I think waiting out those sellers and you could get those tickets close to FV. For games that don't fall right before a long holiday weekend with good teams, you can own sellers in this scenario. Due to the high demand and limited tickets right now, just getting in around face is a good proposition.

still think everybody knows this. they just buy earlier because they don't want the stress of waiting to the last minute.

It depends on the seats... If you're talking lower level quality seats, following what I've posted, you'll save $100's every time. I actually watched Stubhub prior to the Super Bowl, and if you waited until 30 minutes before kickoff, you would've saved $1,000's

Personally I don't find it stressful (although I can see how others might) as getting a good deal always makes me smile.

ETA: Club Gold 117 - Guy has dropped from $600 to $467 in the last hour... Those tickets are prob $350-$400 face... Patience with this guy and you could get under face.

What about the turnaround in Nashville?
