NHL Off-Season thread:Down goes Kane! (2 Viewers)

When does Edmonton begin the fire sale?

Now it's a five alarm fire.

Five games. Five losses.

Worst start in franchise history.

It was one of those “other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?” type of nights.

A lot of things which were wrong with the team in their first four games were right this night.

But that and a couple bucks will get you a cup of coffee.

The team which only managed one win in their first eight games last year and four wins in their first 21, continues to slide down the snake into the snake pit in this game of Snakes & Ladders.

The team which only managed 16 wins at home last year, is 0-2 this season after a 2-0 empty net loss to the Vancouver Canucks as Ryan Miller ran his career to 9-0 against the Oilers and recorded his first shutout.

“It's always about the points,” said coach Dallas Eakins of the standings.

“But we're certainly not going to be kicking ourselves in the face after a game like that.

“It was an even battle. I thought we had a lot more gamesmanship tonight.”

Eakins didn't look like the captain of a sinking ship.

“We just settled into the game and our game plan was to look after our end of the ice first and let our offence come when it comes. I thought we did a much better job in our zone. I thought Ryan Miller played a helluva game.”

The Oilers started the game like their long-suffering fans – who already need to be talked down from the ledge after the string of seasons which have left them 30th, 30th, 29th, 24th and 28th – were hoping.

The first period ended up 0-0 and that was worthy of celebration.

Having given up eight goals in the opening frame in the first four games, it was the first time the team had managed to return to the dressing room after 20 minutes having not given up a goal.

Indeed, they'd given up at least one goal in every period since they left town after a shutout second period in the opener against the Calgary Flames.

It stayed 0-0 until 36:12 had been played when the Oilers, who had done a good job of playing a significant part of the game in the other end, started playing it in their own end.

Nail Yakupov, who to that point had been showcasing himself rather well if he's the guy Craig MacTavish is looking at moving for a centre, failed to clear the puck out of his own end. Scrivens cleared the puck to the corner instead of freezing it. Radim Verbata was left open at the back door and Daniel Sedin found him.

One of the big things this year was to limit five star mistakes. They only had one. But it was a ding, ding, ding, ding, ding-a-ling-dong dandy.

“It was a really tough turnover,” said Eakins of Yakupov's failure to get the puck out.

“That should have been an easy play out that started it. And it always seems like those are the ones. An easy turnover like that which we should have just had out of the zone, it usually turns into something. That's what got the wheels turning.

“And all we had there was a miscommunication between two guys. It was an honest mistake but you're going to have mistakes in the game,” said the second year head coach.

“Right now it feels like we have to play the perfect game to get out of it.”

The Oilers went back to the dressing room knowing that close only counts in horseshoes – and so far this season the Oilers haven't had any horseshoes.

Now they go back to practice for two days to prepare for the second game of the seven game homestand.

Eakins will try to present the same manner to the team today as he did with the media last night.

“You've got to have balance. We have to have balance in our room. That's what we can control.

“Now we have to go back and continue to build on what we did in our own zone tonight. Now we have to go back and hammer on the offence. You don't want to be just what we were tonight, you've got to be able to finish.

“The one thing I don't feel from our players is mass frustration,” said Eakins.

“We just keep going about it the way we are. The way we'll go about it is the way we went about it today,” he said of the team which at least can tell itself – with Tampa Bay, Washington, Carolina and Montreal – they have Eastern Conference opposition on deck in this seven game homestand.

There's only one correct answer to this, and that's the Blues who have the closest thing to a classic NHL 94 celebration.

Seriously, what's with all the rock songs? Most of them are lame. And then there's Detroit. Holy hell... that's really bad.

Chelsea Dagger for the win!

That's just ahead of Detroit.

But I might be biased.

Yeah I'm sure you have just a teensy bit of jealousy/bias going on ;)

Phil Kessel looks like he ate well in the offseason.
He said he skated "about 10 times" in the offseason. IMO that's a ridiculously low number for an NHL player. Even if it's not hardcore training I'd assume he'd be on the ice just shooting pucks almost daily.
Maybe he can use one of the Washington Mystics attendance titles banners from the Verizon Center as a smoking jacket.

Wild play really well but drop both games. just a little off around the net, a lot off missed nets and flubbed passes on prime scoring chances. still managed to have control of the Ducks game until late and really dominate one of the best in the West in LA. couple mistakes have lead to goals, but they are really limiting good chances and had LA pinned most of the game. despite not scoring yet, the PP has looked very good generating lots of chances. still need a shot up top and while that guy is Dumba, his turnover cost them a shorthanded goal so they will be bringing his PP time along slowly. Folin looks solid too, hopefully the kids play well keep Ballard pushed to the press box.

I like the start. didn't look like they had trouble with the bigger bruising teams at all like they have in the past, though they played ANA and LA well last year too. really interested to see if that holds up against the Blues who give them more problems than anyone. they are there with the class in the West this year, pretty clear.

Boston homers....

Is Seth Griffith going to stick, and if so, stay with Lucic and Krejci?
Griffith (and Spooner) sent down to Providence today.
wasted a FAAB buck on him.
And now he's back, and apparently skating with Lucic and Krejci again in practice.

Get used to this revolving door, at least for a while. Strange that the "second" (Marchand-Bergeron-Smith) and third (Kelly-Soderberg-Eriksson) lines seem settled, while the top line RW and the fourth line aside from Paille will be a roll of the dice pretty much game to game. Same with that sixth D spot with Miller and Bartkowski (for now).

One game tonight, great. Bring back the 48 game season with 10 games a night.

The Blackhawks are the last Chicago team to win at solider field.

Mark Hunter leaving the London Knights to join Maple Leafs management. Bad for the Knights, but we still have Dale

Update: he can still accelerate past defenders at will and still has an incredible release.
