NHL Off-Season thread:Down goes Kane! (1 Viewer)

Team has really tightened up significantly in front of Talbot over the past couple weeks. Holding CHI to 2 SOGs on 4 PPs was impressive. That was some Torts-era level shot blocking.

Don't miss seeing Brad Richards running the point on the PP.
No idea if you feel this way, or jamny, kentrik or any other fans

For the past few years, while the Rangers have been a good team, I was always nervous when they played the top tier teams. They always seemed to be a step or player behind. I do not feel that at all this year. I think they can play with anyone and win any game. Add in the fact that they can do it without Hank and I am more confident in this team than any others since I can remember.

The first step they need to take is by finishing a playoff series in less than 6 games

That was feeling like a 1-0 overtime Rangers win from the end of the second period onward.

Game gave me a lot of bad 2012 Eastern Conference semifinals flashbacks.

I definitely agree. There just wasn't enough scoring punch in the lineup before this season, so if Hank wasn't playing out of his mind, it felt like they needed luck to score enough to win. Now they have a style of play where they are always pressuring, they're getting through the zone much quicker, and it just leads to more chances. Richards really slowed the team down a ton last year (both in actual speed and style of play) and he led the forward group in TOI which certainly didn't help things.

Not to be a debbie downer for all you NYR guys but this Hawks team has been avg 2.00G/GP since 2/1. This is not a team that is putting a lot of pucks into the back of the net.

The Rangers definitely look like a better team than last year. Nash getting his scoring touch back is a large part of that improvement.

As to Richards, for personal reasons I wish he was still with the team.

Absolutely. More confidence in this team than any I can remember.

You hit the nail on the head with closing out playoff series' in less than 6. That's been a death knell for this team the last few seasons - tons of playoff games. When they made it to the ECF in '12, they had played almost an entire extra playoff series than the Devils thanks to many OTs that spring. That's why I don't mind this Lundqvist "injury". So long as he's back - optimally with a few weeks left in the season to make a few starts - this really helps him recuperate an extra bit from the extra 20+ games he played last season.

Sadly, as good as this team is playing right now, this is also the deepest the East has been in quite some time IMO. There aren't going to be too many "easy" first round matchups as the Isles, Pitt and Boston are all potential candidates for round 1.

Time to start some trophy discussion? Who's getting the Hart this year? Tavares leading the league in scoring, as of today, and on a really good team. Ovechkin in contention for this 4th Hart, except many Caps followers say Backstrom is the team's best player. Price making a legit case even though goalies don't usually win?

Tavares and Price would be my top 2 for the Hart.Ovechkin and Backstrom will take away from each other and a strong case can be made Holtby has been the team MVP.

Boston a tough matchup? well I guess Lucic might threaten to kill you but other than that. oh, and Reilly Smith. they got him.
I'm sure whoever finishes as the top seed will be thrilled to see the Bruins staring at them in the first round instead of the Panthers or Ottawa.

Caps obviously have so many awesome players!!!!! This is our year!!!!!

alternatives don't have anything to do with whether or not Boston is a tough matchup. but since you brought it up, both are pretty close when they are playing well (like Ottawa is now) IMO.

VLC in + Umberger scratched = rearranging deck chairs on Titanic

ETA: real bleeping expensive full grain mahogany deck chairs at that

:goodposting: Well RJ can be scratched now that we're out of the playoff hunt, he was a vital cog, needed him on that potent PP2 unit.

Love these games. Th effort on the goal by Hayes was ridiculous. His strength on the puck for his age is really something special.

Winnipeg and St. Louis sure are developing a rivalry.

Blues 3rd period melt downs are becoming a concern, but thank you lucky goal!

Whew.

Think the Isles lost their legs a bit there in the 3rd, probably due to that OT from last night.
As an Isles fan...they are being out-coached, big time. If you look at the 2nd half of the season, the 3rd period has been their worst, hands down. Granted, they have gotten very luck in late game goals to tie it up and then win it in OT or a shoot out. But their opponents usually make adjustments between periods and we dont either identify it or have no idea on how to counter it. We have lost more 3rd period leads then i can count.

Case in point, 1st period- isles own it. 2nd period--Rangers dominate for most of the remainder of the game. Why? raggies coaching staff changed their forecheck and screwed the isles breakout.

Coaching will be our biggest weakness in the play offs.

Wild withstand a strong start by NJ and stop multiple early scoring chances. 14 different Wild players with at least a point in a nice 6-2 win. MN hasn't lost back to back games since before the All-Star break.

Three Wild players missed on breakaways. Good back and forth game with lots of chances both ways.

Can't wait to see the Rangers/Isles replay. Took me over 2 hours to get home and my phone's battery died. Last I saw it was 1-0. So pissed on the train and bus not knowing. Got home just when it finished.

Thanks for listening...

Same here jamny. I missed it for a different reason - the kids voted me off the TV. Saw a replay of the Hayes goal though. That move of his was ridiculous. Rather surprised he had the time to fake a shot one way, turn around, and then throw in the puck from the other side. This kid has really showed that he's a very good two-way player.

To be fair, it was my oldest's 16th bday. They were watching Japanese anime - there's some wild #### in those shows. Knowing I wouldn't be able to convince them to watch hockey, I was trying to get them to watch Rick & Morty. Failure on all fronts.

More than one tv down

Eta: I even watch the games on my phone or tablet these days
