NHL Off-Season thread:Down goes Kane! (3 Viewers)

The Pittsburgh Penguins have agreed to terms with forward Eric Fehr to a three-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.

The deal runs through the 2017-18 season and has an average annual value of $2 million.

:( I always liked Fehr. I was sad to see him go two years ago...maybe he'll get hurt and come back again (again)...

So what was the supposed nature of the alleged incident that they can neither confirm nor deny ever happened at any given time at any given place?
http://sportsmockery.com/2015/08/patrick-kanes-secret-parties-could-be-what-the-police-are-investigating/

According to an anonymous source that lives close to Kane in New York, he has secret parties at his house all the time and there’s specific rules everyone has to abide by.

Rules for Patrick Kane’s New York Parties:

 1. Everyone enters through the garage.
 2. Everyone has to sign a legal document agreeing not to talk about the party or take pics.
 3. Everyone has to surrender their phones at the door.
 4. Have to be invited by a third party to attend. (Kane’s friend)
This is not uncommon for celebrities, it’s smart for them to keep tight security when millions of dollars are on the line regarding their reputation. So, when something bad happens, if something bad happens, it’s very hard for the police to investigate due to the secrecy of the event.

According to our sources, Kane’s family is very protective of his image after the cab incident and only certain people get invited to his parties. It’s normally just high school friends and family, you also have to know a friend to receive an invite. Girls from New York attend these parties all the time, there’s one planned for this Friday when Kane is expected to bring the Cup back to Buffalo.

At this point, all of this is speculation. Nobody truly knows exactly what Kane is being investigated for, but if it’s the Hamburg police chances are it’s stemming from something that happened in/near his New York home.

Man the deadspin comments for the Patrick Kane story are simultaneously entertaining and sad. And rife with the term douchenozzle.

Somebody in Hamburg, NY trying to hit it big.

Although Kane is a pretty big scumbag around town, so it wouldn't surprise me.
most reports I've heard lately indicate he's matured considerably.

giving him the benefit of the doubt here, and I'm assuming something happened at one of his parties so he's a focal point, but that he's not necessarily the perp.

well, guess I missed the latest reports.

from what I've heard of Kane over the years, I guess I'm not surprised but really thought he had grown up.

Last summer he was at Woodlawn beach trying to get a few ladies to go home with him. One woman turned him down and said I don't care who you are, you still look like that. - Found that quite humerous.

all the comments I'm seeing on facebook are along the lines of "what was she doing in a bar if she's under 18? How would he know she was so young if he met her in a bar?"

ummm...pretty much everybody starts going out to bars at 16 or 17 in Buffalo. Kane was no different. Bouncers used to say "our motto is we accept fake id".

I am not a lawyer, and don't play one on TV, but I wonder if there is any kind of legal argument that can be made here if you meet someone in a bar that ends up being underage. What is the liability of the bar in such a case?

I don't know New York law but it's not a defense.

Gotta be kidding me (well, it's not a surprise). As the most casual of fans, this one stinks. Love watching him play.

I'm sure you're right, but there's not a lot of gray area between someone who can be in a bar legally and someone who is considered underage with regard to statutory rape. We're talking 5-6 years here, not just a year or two.

oof

Anyone have links describing Kane's recent behavior? I thought he'd grown up since the anti Semitic remarks etc in Madison.

now reports saying it's a statutory rape allegation. I think NY law sets age of consent at 16yo.

:oldunsure:
Is this still a rumor out there? I've read multiple times the victim went to the hospital and submitted to a rape kit. Seems to me this is more than him having sex with someone not old enough to give consent.

I think one source reported that rumor early on, but not sure it's been substantiated since then.

there are a lot of rumors out there. not sure what is true or not.

Some of the comments are amazing. One person is arguing that the woman went to the hospital and subjected herself to a rape test and therefore she must have definitely been raped because women don't make false accusations like that and go to the trouble of going to a hospital.

FWIW, she is not a woman.

So it's safe to say that the best players in the league and the best teams lack, um, discipline. Sharp rumors, Kane rumors, Stoll, Carter rumors, Richards.

How do the Kings not make the playoffs? Question from an outsider.

New details emerge in allegations against NHL star Patrick Kane

Alleged rape victim has bite marks, a scratch

http://www.buffalonews.com/feed/new-details-emerge-in-allegations-against-nhl-star-patrick-kane-20150809

New details are emerging about the time that Patrick Kane spent in a downtown Buffalo nightclub last weekend and the allegations made by a woman who claims that Kane raped her after meeting her in the club and taking her to his Town of Hamburg waterfront home.

Sources with knowledge of the investigation said that the young woman who has accused the hockey superstar of rape had bite marks on her shoulders and a scratch on her leg after the alleged attack.

The woman alleges that Kane invited her and a female friend to his home for a private party after they met him last Saturday night at SkyBar, a popular nightclub on Franklin Street, the sources said.

Shortly after she and her friend arrived at Kane’s home on Old Lakeshore Road, the accuser alleges that she went by herself into another room, where Kane followed her, overpowered her and raped her, the sources said.

The woman left Kane’s home with her friend and used a cellphone to call a relative immediately after the alleged attack. She then went to a local hospital for examination, and police were called afterward, the sources said.

The alleged attack occurred about 4 a.m. last Sunday, about an hour after Kane was seen leaving SkyBar.

A person who knows the woman described her as frantic and traumatized when she called her relative to report what happened.

So Mike Richards got cut from the Kings and they're out from under his contract and cap hit, no questions asked?

So Far Silence

To date, there has been radio silence from the NHLPA. So what is going on?

As per Article 17(2) of the NHL CBA, Donald Fehr and the NHLPA have 60 days to file a grievance (which would be heard by an impartial arbitrator and not the Commish Gary Bettman). While the precise date of the termination is unclear, the Union’s deadline is somewhere around August 29.

So the Union still has time. While Fehr would like to get this resolved as soon as possible, he would likely first want to do his due diligence and assemble all relevant information. It’s also possible the NHLPA has fired off a demand letter, but that is not known.

I don’t expect the NHLPA and Kings are negotiating settlement. The NHLPA is unlikely to accept the termination of Richards contract in any form. For the NHLPA, it simply cannot allow this precedent to stand as it could adversely impact its members. By allowing the termination to go unchallenged, the floodgates risk opening with teams terminating problem contracts. ‘He’s fat, cut him. He’s slow, cut him.’ Ultimately, expect the NHLPA to see this case as far too important an event and precedent to go unopposed.

That means Richards either gets his full buyout of $14.5 million or the NHLPA grieves. That presumably would also mean the Kings are saddled with the accompanying cap hit.

And then this comes out 10min ago, they must be watching....

@NHLPA: The NHLPA has filed a grievance on behalf of Mike Richards contesting the termination of his contract by the LA Kings.

Man I go on vacation and the #### hits the fan. If there is any truth to the accusations I hope he doesn't get any preferential treatment. If this is based on regret or looking for a payout hope she is held accountable for it.

Regardless I would assume if he's charged and found guilty the Hawks have an out on his contract a la Mike Richards? If he's charged and found not guilty or if there are no charges assuming the Hawks put in him on some type of lock down or give him a baby sitter and he goes through some type of treatment for alcohol/etc. Pretty disappointed that he has found himself in another situation with booze, thought he turned the corner with all that non sense.

not sure if you guys saw this:

Tim Graham is a top notch journalist. This really doesn't look good for Kaner.

"“doesn’t look good … he’s being investigated for something heinous.”

“It’s looking more ominous than not,” Graham says, based on what his sources tell him.

"Graham says Kane has a very “sloppy” personal life and he’s not surprised at all by the allegation."

Good low risk move. Team needs some depth at center and they can bury him in the AHL if it doesn't work out, like Malone last year.

Here's the full interview. Nothing else earth shattering from you quoted, but in case anyone wants to listen.

Doesn't sound good at all but if he did rape this woman I hope he goes to prison and never plays pro hockey again.

There's a whole lot more I think goes into reporting this than not. I'd check in with some legal experts about rape and reporting of names, situations, etc. You'll find that it's really intricate.

The Deadspin claim that Graham makes to set the tone about Kane sounds weak; they had a "Follow The Kane" segment back when the Hawks beat the Bruins. It was in poor taste, and didn't pan out for them. That said, there's probably a reason for it.

That also said, let the journalistic ethics run their course, let the system run its course, and we'll all find out soon. Sounds awful all around.

eta2* The "Follow the Kane" segment was set to a Korn cover, IIRC. "Follow The Leader." It encouraged people to dredge up whatever they could about Kane and send it to them for a price.

Shawn Thornton, on what advice he'd give former Panthers teammate and new Bruin Jimmy Hayes:

“Stay out of the bar. You can’t hide here. Don’t be dancing on tables with your shirt off and bottles of vodka in your hand, like somebody else.”

:coffee:

And more, on Hamilton forcing his way out of town:

"Listen, I’m a little surprised. I love Boston and for someone to want to get out of it, I don’t get it, especially in the first few years (of his career). But it’s his world. He had decisions to make and that’s the one he made. Hopefully, he’s happy in Calgary.”
